Mercenaries Playground of Destruction was awesome! So... what happened with this one?

User Rating: 6.5 | Mercenaries 2: World in Flames PS2
The sequel to one of the PS2's best sandbox titles is back and just as explosive as the first, just on a much more unsatisfying level.

Lets start with the STORYLINE: In my opinion, the basic idea isn't that bad. You just get back from assaulting a military facility and expect to get your hard-earned pay, instead you get a bullet in your ass and the wrath of the Venezuelan army. So you set off on an oil fueled quest of revenge to kill the man that did this and, more importantly, get payed. The main problem with the story is just how flawed the execution is. It's short and has one of the most unsatisfying endings I've ever experienced.

Now onto the GRAPHICS: I don't really like talking about graphics because unlike most gamers today, I really don't care that much about them. But I was really disappointed with how bad they were in this game. I mean, they could have at least tried right? The civilian cars are blocky, most "Big" explosions look weak, and sometimes the civilians look like the ones from "Bodyharvest"! I didn't know we were back on the N64...

GAMEPLAY, my favorite part: The gameplay in World in Flames was really where this title shines! In my honest opinion, it really makes up for all of this game's faults. The PS2 version of Mercs. 2 still uses the same engine as the original game but with a few added features like: Swimming, Skyjacking, Management, and even a few minigames! My one complaint was the lack of co-op, that I was really hoping for.

SOUNDTRACK: I just felt like giving the soundtrack honorable mention for being generally amazing considering this game is a rushed last-generation port of a low-rated game. It's not that the soundtrack does anything new or exciting, but it's somber feel does really capture the mood of being a foreign and generally hated mercenary in a country consumed by the fires of war.
