Just another generic military-themed FPS.

One could call Danger Close's 2010 reboot of "Medal of Honor" a mediocre attempt at trying to make the series relevant again. The developer (along with DICE of "Battlefield") was given the assignment to modernize the series in the vein of "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare". Unfortunately, their attempt was not too successful in the eyes of critics. Danger Close's campaign was a retread of "Modern Warfare", while DICE's multiplayer lacked the depth of their own "Battlefield" series. Despite the low critical reception, the game did well enough to spawn a sequel. And once again EA Games assigned it to the developers at Danger Close, but this time without the aid of DICE. Unfortunately, the result is about as the same as before. It's a generic FPS with all the trademark staples of the genre and nothing more.

Like its prececessor, "Warfigher" strives to be realistic in its depiction of today's U.S. soldiers. But the campaign doesn't try for gritty. Instead it follows the usual Hollywood blockbuster route of action-heavy events. Even with a more grounded feel than "Call of Duty", it still feels like a product that Michael Bay would appreciate more than U.S. troops. I also don't know why there is such an emphasis on breaching doors (other than it results in a cool slo-mo sequence) or why you are even given tactical options to breach. After all, this isn't a tactical shooter in the tradition of "Rainbow Six". The familiar campaign is only about 6 hours long. And there is no replay value since it is quite boring.

One of the biggest disappointments of the 2010 "Medal of Honor" was DICE's multiplayer which was good, but limited. The multiplayer package of "Warfighter" offers a whole lot more, but it's not exactly better. Customization options are deeper than COD and the "buddy" system adds a little bit of co-op to the competitive matches. Like "BatItlefield", teams are split into groups which encourages teamwork. Of the five online modes offered, I've only played Team Deathmatch and Sector Control (equivalent to Capture the Flag) which are standard FPS games. But the pacing is different than a "Modern Warfare" game. This is not a run-n-gun affair due to the six different soldier classes which utitlize different strategies.

"Medal of Honor: Warfighter" is a mediocre FPS. The campaign is nothing special and the multiplayer isn't either. The quality of the product is decent, but this is one of those games that should be free-to-play. Mainly because it is a case of "seen this, done that". There are certainly better titles to waste time with.
