More open ended than what you've come to expect from Medal of Honor.

Medal of Honor: European Assault is graphically ugly and open ended WWII first person shooter with a broken save system.

In Medal of Honor: European Assault you play as William Holt, an American intelligent officer who is fighting a war in four different places. First you start with the British SAS in St. Nazaire, second campaign throws you in North Africa against Rommel'’s troops, third campaign lets you play alongside Russians partisans near Stalingrad and finally the fourth campaign lets you fight with the US forces during the Battle of the Bulge. All in all there is still only 11 different missions so Medal of Honor: European Assault is not a long lasting experience.

Environments are open ended encouraging you to explore and try an alternate path for your mission, but unfortunately this freedom of movement comes with a prize: graphics are really ugly to look at and the save system makes the game artificially more difficult than it otherwise would be. Sound effects are that same dramatic and serious quality you’ve already come to expect from the previous Medal of Honor games. I especially enjoyed the soundtrack in Russian levels.

Gameplay is, as mentioned, more open ended than in previous Medal of Honor games. There are of course those primary objectives and always at least a few secondary objectives giving the game a little replay value. Controls work just fine being that same quality as always, but the save system is borderline broken: you can’t save anywhere between missions! And since the missions tend to be pretty long it’s possible to play 15 to 30 minutes and then if you die you’ll have start from scratch again.

There is also an infinite number of enemies until you cross some invisible line in your advancing efforts. I like sniping so in North Africa I climbed on top of a hill and shot every single enemy I could find in the German trench ahead. This cost nearly all of my ammunition. But when I finally made an advance towards the trench ALL the Germans had suddenly respawned. So the game required me to complete the mission in a traditional run-and-gun way, but there was no way to know this in advance.

Ugly graphics, infinite number of enemies and especially the save system hinder Medal of Honor: European Assault achieving greatness.
