An enjoyable action game

User Rating: 7 | Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death PC

This is one of those games which when I first saw, I thought I would hate. It sounded and looked so generic at first. But I ended up liking it, and enjoying it.

The story of this game is nothing special. Marlow Briggs is killed when his girlfriend is kidnapped by her employer, only to be revived as the Spirit Warrior by an ancient aztec mask, which gives him superhuman powers and weapons. The rest is pretty much his search for his girlfriend with no real twist, except for the ending, which somehow again fell flat for me.

The graphics are decent for a game of this rank, with enjoyable visuals of an aztec environment.

The main point of the game is the gameplay, which in the end I think is excellent. It is a typical action hack'n'slash game, with lots of enemies for you to destroy. With various weapons and magic, your arsenal of moves is pretty diverse which leaves you room to experiment and connect them into crazy combos. Each weapon is unique and offers a different style of play, so you can choose your favorite depending on your preference of attack speed, power and range. I really enjoyed the fights and had a lot of fun, although the platforming sequences felt kind of boring for me.

Another nice addition is the mask which follows you throughout the game, with it's witty one-liners and funny comments of your playing. The dialogues between Marlow and the mask make up for the bad story dialogues in a great way, adding a great amount of humor to the game.

This is a game you should definitely try, and even if it looks bad at first, you should give it time, it will grow on you. It isn't very long, but you will enjoy the time you spend with it.
