The original, a classic, a birthmark in time.

Ah, back to the very basics. When it wasn't all hype that made the game, it was your skill. Mario Bros. is the very first in the Mario series, but not the first appearance of Mario himself. Nevertheless this is the game that started the series that has had one of the largest impacts on the gaming industry.

Player 1 stars as Mario himself, your objective, clean these sewers! No Mushroom Kingdom here. This is a platform 2D, your goal is get ride of all the enemies on and that will appear on the screen. They will first begin to appear thru the pipes on the top left and right of the screen and begin to make their way down the various platforms. But don't jump on their heads like you do in the latter Mario series, wait until they are just overtop of the level above you, then jump up hitting the level and knocking them on theirs backs! But be warned, some will go twice as fast when you do this, so a little extra room to give them a second bash will be in order. As well, once there is only the one enemy left on the screen, it will go bezerk and begin to move very fast, so nail it when you can and stay out of its way, one hit and your dead. Also, their will be firballs spining from one end of the screen to the other, again, they touch you, your dead. But if the fireballs seem like a bit much for you, then by selecting the different game type, you can get rid of them all together on a easier game mode.

There is a little help as well. There are "POW" bars that appear at the beginning of every 3 stages of the game, give it a hit and whatever is touching the ground will have will get knocked over on there backs, or give it a 2nd knock to do away with those harder enemies. You will have 3 wacks at the "POW" bar before it disappears. But be warned, you will get one "POW" block for every 3 stages passed, if you choose to use that block entirely within the first stage, don't see another one appear until 2 more stages down the road. The furthur on you go the more enemies you will encounter per stage and the faster they will become. Durning the first 40 stages of the game, you should be able to rack up alot of free men and you will need them. The furthest I have gotten in this game is Level 59, after that I got swamped! The graphics are great considering the system and the sound as well, the only better version of the game is avaliable for the NES, but of course that one will be a little better off, the NES was the more powerful console. This is probably one of the best games ever made for the Atari Console.
