Super Star Ultra is the best Kirby game I have ever played. I highly recommend it!

User Rating: 9 | Kirby Super Star Ultra DS
Kirby Super Star Ultra, is the game that was needed to kick the franchise back into gear. With 2006's Kirby title, Squeak Squad, adding the new "Bubble System" to the gameplay made it fun again to sit back and just play some good ol' Kirby. But after awhile, it got old to me and I began to play it less and less as time rolled onward. Now, about a year later, Kirby is making a comeback with Kirby Super Star Ultra. Here is my review, mainly focused on the single player viewpoint of the game.

Upon first starting the game, you'll notice the game's first cool feature: 2 player wireless co-op. Personally, this is what I have been waiting for, a chance to battle through the 2D levels with a friend at my side.

When you reach the "Main Menu", you'll see 3 different single player adventures, and a few mini-games. As you progress in the game, you will unlock more of those mini-games. Personally my favorite mini-game is "Kirby On the Draw", which is a shooting game much like you'd play at a carnival.
Each adventure is basically a new mission for Kirby to go on, and in each adventure are a few stages that you must complete to move on. Every time you beat an adventure you unlock the next one. As you unlock the adventures, they become harder and before you start each one you will be given a difficulty rating in stars in the upper right hand corner of the top screen.
Other features in the Main Menu include a Theater to watch movies that you get after clearing a game.

It may take new players a few minutes to get the new control scheme down, but it hasn't really changed that dramatically. The original 2D side-scrolling gameplay that is Kirby is still here, and still works perfectly. But now let's get into the actual gameplay, shall we?
Another favorite feature of mine is the helper. In Squeak Squad, you would engulf an enemy and press down to get their power. Now you can still do that, but if you press X while using that obtained power, the creature you engulfed pops out of you and is now your partner! Otherwise, it's pretty much the same elements that made the past games so fun. My only complaint is that the "Bubble System" from Squeak Squad is gone, and is replaced by your health bar, score, lives, and what stage you are on. Really though, it isn't that much of a change.

The levels are crisp and look great on the DS' screens. Graphics wise, the game is pretty good looking for the DS' limited capabilities. Menus are also easy to navigate, and if you forgot what the controls are in the game you can: Press START to pause your game, then press right and left to see basic attacks, moves, and combos.

Super Star Ultra essentially combines the great game elements of past games and adds a few new and enjoyable features to the formula that result in a worthy game for the Kirby franchise. But most importantly, it's fun, and will keep you playing for hours.
