Kirby 64 is still the masterpiece it was back in 2000, and stands out as one of Kirby's best games to date.

User Rating: 9 | Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards N64
Many gamers grew up with Kirby 64 back in the day, and many have fond memories of the game. I do remember back in the day my friend Patrick had the game and we enjoyed playing it. My memory of it was pretty sketchy, but it wasn't until a decade later my friend James let me have his game for $3 dollars! I was psyched to play it, and since then I've been playing it, because of how fun it is.

Crystal Shards basically has you collecting crystal shards in order to save the universe from evil. Kirby 64's story is told through cute and good humored cut-scenes that make it entertaining to watch. In each level (except for the bosses), there are three hidden crystals. Find all of them and you can reach the final boss. Finding these crystals is very fun and adds replay value.

You also on some occasions can play as King Dedede. He can help break obstacles that block your path, climb walls, and attack enemies with his hammer. It's fun to play as him, even if it's brief. Your allies also help you; Waddle Dee offers transportation, and the artist gives you health, lives, and secrets. I love collecting stars to give you lives and raise your score. At the end of each level, you can try to win a prize by doing a long jump, very cool and original!

What really elevates Kirby 64 is using Kirby's weapons to make combos. For example, you can combine a cutter and fire to create a flame sword, which is awesome. If you combine a bomb with rock, it creates dynamite. My personal favorite is when you combine rock with electric to get a Rock Electric Chain. Figuring out the combos is crazy fun and is what makes Kirby 64 Kirby 64! You also need these in some occasions in order to find crystals, which is challenging but never frustrating.

In terms of fun, Kirby 64 is excellent. Flaws do show up though. I hate that when you turn off the game, your lives can't be saved, meaning you'll always start with 3. I did try the multiplayer mode, but that sucked, because it's basically three Mario Party style games that get boring quickly. Hamsters sometimes come out of nowhere to attack you, which makes no sense.

Graphically, Kirby 64 looks good for an N64 title. Backgrounds are richly painted, and there are some cool lightning effects. I love the fall scenery of the 2nd level, as well as the dark spooky background of one of the last levels. I love the music in this game! It's soothing, relaxing, and just plain memorable. No wonder people have loved the music here.

Kirby 64 is still the masterpiece it was back in 2000, and stands out as one of Kirby's best games to date. Once again, this is another Nintendo 64 treasure, and you should play it to see why. N64 owners need this in their collections.
