User Rating: 10 | Kentoushi: Gladiator Begins PSP
I hate it when Gamespot Reviewers completely misrepresent a game with lower ratings. I used to think Gamespot Reviewers were true gamers, but they don't give each title the attention they deserve, unless it's already popular and critically acclaimed. I almost passed this up, but thanks to user reviews I'm glad I checked it out.

This game is a mix of beat-em, free movement fighting, and RPG to capture the experience of being a gladiator in ancient Rome.

Pros:

•Addictive game play with some depth in its fighting system.•
You can move all around an arena pitted against other gladiators. Equipping good items, chipping off your opponents armor, parrying attacks, acquiring new moves, getting a boost from the audience, or changing attributes could determine each fight.

•Customizable characters with huge item inventory that is upgradable•
Part of the fun is beating gladiators for better weapons or armor. You can then forge items together to make them stronger, lighter, or have bonus attributes. If you like customizability, then you'll be hooked!

•Great graphics•
The models, items, and background, all look good. However, the world map could have been more interesting.

Cons:

•Inadequate tutorials•
There are some aspects to the game that aren't fully explained like pleasing the audience and item forging.

•Scenarios can sometimes feel repetitive•
It would have been better if they changed things up by adding special opponents, scenarios, and arenas like fighting on chariots or going against wild beasts.

•Story lacks flare and drama•
The story and dialog takes itself a bit too seriously. The characters could have had more exaggerated personalities and expressions. Some cut scenes could have been added to make things more interesting.

Overall:

If you like ancient Rome, free movement fighting games, item collecting, and customizing characters, then you should definitely check this game out. It has the fun of beat-em-ups, some fighting game depth, and some RPG elements to keep you interested. There is definitely room for improvement and this game should get the opportunity for a sequel, which I would definitely play.

Bottom line is it has addictive, bloody combat and character customization.
