Horizontal, I have a newer 360, so overheating isn't a problem.

Horizontal for the first 3 months, then vertical for 3 months (almost knocked it over during that time) and now I've had it horizontal for 10 months.

Right now it's in horizantal, but I switch it often, My Rock Band got scratched b/c it tiped over while the game was inside.(got the whole set replaced for free though).

I always have heating problems when in horizantal, better yet I'm a go swtcih to vertical right now!

Vertical all the way. If you are carefull it is better. I haven't scratched a game or had it fall for 7 months(thats how long i have had my 360). Who messes and jumps around where the game console is anyway?

I used to have mine vertical to reduce the chances of it overheating, but once I started playing online I've put it horizontal so if someone trips over my ethernet cable, well, at least the Xbox won't be hurt.

Vertical since I got it in May. I would most likely orient it horizontally if I didn't have a cat who likes to lay on things...

Well, I am new to the 360 scene. I've had mine for about a week and I've been back and forth on this. I started with it horizontal on a wooden surface and noticed the bottom (meaning the part parallel to the floor) got really warm while playing games. I then switched to vertical, and at first I was concerned about the air flow issue, but I could feel a good flow of air being sucked into the bottom vent and I noticed that the side (what was the bottom when horizontal) is now very cool and the only heat I feel is being blown out of the back. I haven't had any disc issues, so I think I'm keeping it vertical!

I do horizontal and place it on four support things made of Lego blocks to give it some space on the bottom. :P

And isn't the HDD covering a vent??

Horizontal since I bought it roughly a year ago

[QUOTE="Bahaa3000"] We all heard it :- Horizontal is bad for heating !Avenger1324

Isn't that the problem with having it vertical? AFter all vertical blocks the vents at the bottom which is the biggest inlet for air when standing vertical.

It's true that the biggest vent is blocked at the bottom, but then again, if you have it vertical, although the largest vent is blocked, a larger surface area of the xbox is exposed to the air so heat is dissipated over a larger surface area. science mode off.

EDIT: oh and horizontal since Dec 2006

The lego brick idea is good lol. And you also have a valid point about the HDD. i'm using a memory card at the moment so i don't have it covered, so perhaps i have less chance of getting overheating problems :)

Horizontal. Less chance of it falling over. Disc lays flat so no spinning issues. And all components lay flat inside so they dont have gravitational pull on the parts when they heat up.

I always keep mine horizontal on a little table out in the open near my air conditioner vent, so to try and prevent overheating(I have owned my 360 for a long time and have never had any overheating problems).
