yes i recommend getting all of the 2d nes and snes zeldas so get the legend of zelda and the legend of zelda a link to the past but you might not want to try out zelda 2 adventure of link cause its a action rpg side scroller but i still recommend you get it.
Personally I don't like the original, but you should get ALttP, MC and PH. However some of the best games are on Game Boy Color. Link's Awakening is my favorite 2D Zelda Game.
I'd also suggest playing all of the games (including Zelda 2). However, the standout titles are easily A Link to the Past, The Minish Cap, and Phantom Hourglass. However, there are also a couple titles for the GBC you could pick up if you can find them (and still have a GBC around). Link's awakening, and the Oracle games - both of which I haven't played are highly praised just as A Link to the Past, and other more known Legend of Zelda titles.
I still really enjoy my copies of Oracle of Seasons and Ages. They are a bit dated but Capcom did a fantastic job of sticking with the Zelda roots and creating an original Link adventure.
