Final Fantasy XIV and XI

As I am new to online gaming I know next to nothing about the FF MMO games. The only thing I remember reading is that you have to subscribe :?

Still it'd be cool for this union to go out and play online together, so can you tell me about FFXI and FFXIV?

BTW I'd probably buy for the consoles.

I am not sure. When it said on the box I needed to pay, I was all like I need a job first... Never happened :P 

I have only played FFXI......I got the first month free. I will play XIV when it comes to PS3.
