Your favorite Final Fantasy game?

I may be experiencing a recency bias, but I thought Final Fantasy 7 Remake was fantastic. Sure, it doesn't conclude the game, but it was a return to form for the series, with exciting combat, amazing writing and the same characters we love. They also did a great of changing it just enough to keep things interesting. Also, gotta love that killer OST. So to me, FF7 Remake may very well be my favorite Final Fantasy game so far. If I weren't to include that, I think the original and 8 are still up there for me. 8 was my favorite for a long time, but in hindsight, tis 7 that I remember most.

How about you, SW? Your favorite Final Fantasy game?

That would be VI. Most people who pick 7 do so because it's the first one they knew or remember, but I've been playing the series from IV up to 10 and VI is my favorite. As for FFVII, I don't think it's the best Final Fantasy, I don't think it's the best RPG on the PS1, and I don't even think it's the best Final Fantasy on the PS1 either. I think both Tactics and VIII are better. IX may very well be better too but I skipped that one.

1. FFX - I know a lot of people don't like Tidus, and he's not my favorite FF protagonist by any means, but the story and atmosphere, along with the musical score, characters and traditional gameplay make it my favorite game in the series.
2. FFXII - Battle system was smart and fun to manage. Mature characters were welcoming. Only negative for me was trying to have a political story that, unfortunately, meandered in an open world setting.
3. FFVII - At the time of release, JRPG fans around the globe were very impressed with the transitional graphics and deep story. I don't mind when a game goes long if it holds my interest to the end, and this game did just that. I also loved the materia system and hunting for summons creatures.

So tough to pick one. I’ve loved the franchise since the very first one came out on the NES. I still very vividly remember going down to my local store to buy it and returning home and first playing it.

I would probably go with Final Fantasy III on the SNES but could easily go with FFVII on the PlayStation. Also loved FFVIII and FFX. Haven’t played FFVII Remake yet but have seen a lot of it and it looks amazing. Will probably be right at the top for me as well.

Including spin off its FF7, FF Tactics War of the Lion, FF12, FF14 and FF7R. Idk if Vagrant Story can be included but its part of FF12 Ivalice world.

FFVI easy.

FFI through FFV's storytelling is too simple, and from VII on, its way too convoluted.

VI had the right balance.

The only ones I've ever been able to get into are VII and VII: Remake. I've tried other ones, like VI and IX, but they don't do it for me.

I have to admit that Remake is damn good ... i don't know if it takes the first place for me, but it's close between Remake and VI. IX and Tactics would be right behind.

FFIX is the best. All other answers are wrong.

FFVII my second favourite game of all time.

Ether FF7 remake or FF15, FF6 would easily be my 3rd fav.

I have played some mainline FF games. They're terrible.

8 is best for me then 7. I personally think 9 has become overrated in recent years. No one cared about it when it released. Out of nowhere people started saying it's the best because it reminds them of 6. 9s battle system is archaic compared to 7 and 8.

The only FF game that i beat was FF13, and it was a damn pathetic experience.

Didn't have a ps1 nor a ps2 so i couldn't play the "real" ones. All the hype for FF13 made me rent it on the 360, and god damn was it shit or what. I remember complaining about how bad it was compared to Lost Odyssey, the superior game.

Nothing stopping you people from playing the real FFVII, FFVIII, or FFIX as all of them are available on PC in a remastered form. With the FFIV pixel remaster out now, and VI supposedly coming out very soon (listed as 2021), that covers the best two Final Fantasy games of the 16 bit era. There's no reason those of you who missed out on these cannot play them now.

I missed out on the first 3 for NES. I may get the pixel remasters of those and give them a shot. Hopefully they're not as boring as the Lunar Silver Star Story game I played a few days ago.

Got it day one and it's still my favorite FF by far followed by the very underappreciated 8 then 10 and 7. I enjoyed every FF game including Tactics (which I don't count as an appropriate answer) through the first 10. After that the franchise lost it's direction in my opinion although a couple games aren't bad. The MMO is pretty good as well. FFIX is easily in my top 100 games of all time and that's a tough list to crack these days.

There's a good reason nobody seemed to care about IX when it was released. IX was released November 13, 2000. The PS2 was released October 26, 2000. People were saving their money for PS2 consoles and games before IX came out. When IX hit the market it was already last-gen, and never had the same chance as the others. Square should have made it a PS2 launch title.

@eoten: Have you tried Lunar 2: Eternal Blue? I didn't like Silver Star that much either, but I loved Eternal Blue back in the days.

Obviously FF8 for it's legendary junction system and masterful integration of RPG mechanics in a TCG.

6-9 are all pretty great.

Dragon Quest is a better series.

FF is definatley a mixed bag for sure.

1. Was completely superceded by DQ3 next year
2. Was a prototype for the SaGa series
3. Was good, but was nowhere near as charming as DQ3 made a few years earlier
4. Actually allowed the FF series to stand out, with its predefined protagonists, ATB combat.
5. Excellent game. It truly shaped my expectations for the franchise. With its job system being hte inspiration for Tactics, 11, (formerly 14), and Bravely Default
6. Had good music and very impressive SNES graphics, but other than that it wasnt particularly memorable
7. Is popular to hate, and its structure is very similar to 6. But by the gods, its story aged like wine xD Being more and more relevant with current political trends. Its materia system remains the inspiration for modern games like Path of Exile.
8. Is known for being bad
9. Was a nostalgia trip. Didnt have too much to offer if you werent already deeply invested in FF
10. Hahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaha, good turn based combat system though.
11. Did further develop MMORPGs, but by the gods. It is the most clunky MMO I have ever played. And only the PC port remains, which is probably the worst console port I have ever played. Still, it does scratch an itch I wish modern mmos would scratch, and that includes 14.
12. Didnt really get great until the international edition. The story was always very intriguing though. SE does best writing political storylines.
13. The second weakest mainline entry, only behind 2.
14. Was so bad they had to redo it. After that it went from Mediocre to great, to good, to masterpiece.
15. It can be fun at times, but by the gods is it deeply flawed. Overall I wouldnt rate it any higher than a 5.

FFX is the best Final Fantasy by far.
