While Microsoft won't give us sales numbers for their console themselves, instead opting to share other metrics that they feel are more relevant to their business, we do get an update on the console's sales every now and then anyway. Other sources, such as third party publishers, and analyst and tracking firms, usually update us on an estimated total for the Xbox One's worldwide sales infrequently.

One of those analyst and tracking firms, SuperData, has now revealed that the Xbox One's sales are at an estimated 26 million units worldwide. In a report on the upcoming Nintendo Switch's expected performance in the market, SuperData said that the Switch launches into a market with 55 million units sold for the PS4, and 26 million for the Xbox One.

This is actually a rather dismal number- at this time last year, the Xbox One's worldwide total was estimated to be 19 million, meaning that in the year that has followed since, Xbox has only sold 7 million units.This represents another year on year decline worldwide- although Microsoft have previously claimed that in the US, at least, Xbox has seen gains year on year in the last few months of 2016.

Regardless, however, in terms of overall performance, the prognosis is grim- and doubtless Microsoft will be hoping that the upcoming Xbox One Scorpio revitalizes their fortunes. As it stands now, however, the Xbox One's sales seem to be losing momentum far too rapidly.

26 million is still pretty good for only 3 years, especially when you realize that the xboxone is only available for 2 years without a kinect.

Well they've beaten the original xbox. Anybody that thought they would ever recover from the reveal to be a sales power house is lying to make a story out of nothing.

Even if it was it's hardly a good comparison, the xbox original was only 4 years old when the x360 released. The xboxone came after a generation that lasted 8 years and was long overdue.

It sold more than the sega genesis, that's not an abysmal number, console gaming has become a lot more popular, and a lot of those casual gamers bought a ps4. This number will not end here as well.

Also what does TLHBO mean?

I know what owned means.

I'll think about that when I play magic duels (which is not on the ps4) or play with one of my 100$ legends on fifa (which are exclusive to the xbox)

@commander: We aren't in 1994 anymore no need to compare it to the Genesis. As a modern console from the 21st century its sales are abysmal. The gaming industry has grown a lot since the 90s, the Genesis' sales numbers is not a metric of success anymore (as much as I love that console).

If true that is...yeah, quite abysmal. Less than half of what the PS4 has done so far. This is the importance of a global market, as the difference in the XB1's best markets (US+UK) is arguably minimal (though even those territories have been lost for them this gen).

How is 26 million that bad after 3 years on the market?

I get that its not the blockbuster success that the PS4 is, but there is no chance in hell that the PS4 loses sales unless Sony loses their minds and screws it all up.

All the Xbox One has to do is hold the line until the next generation when Microsoft can try again. Rather then chasing for a crown that they won't win, Microsoft's efforts should be focused on building up their first-party portfolio and holding off Nintendo's attempts at a comeback.

The PS3 sold poorly for most of its lifespan, and Sony's response was to beef up their first-party studios and ensure the PS4 did not repeat the same mistakes.

Is anyone shocked by this? Pretty much everyone figured the Xbox One was around 25-30 million at this point.

No, the numbers aren't staggering by any means but they are decent enough to ensure third-party support from most developers.

All Microsoft needs to do is hold the line. Even if they sell 7 million units each year for the next 3-4 years, they will end up in the 50 to 60 million range by the end of the generation.

Nowhere near PS4 numbers, but still a decent showing.

Not great, but not bad either. You cannot beat PlayStation, suck it up and get as close as you can.

@Desmonic:

I guess it depends on how much money has gone into Xbox One. Sure, it may not have sold as well as the PS4 which has done superbly, but that doesn't mean the Xbox One isn't successful in its own right.

As long as it was a good investment from Microsoft, that's all the system needs.

They won't sell 7 million each year. Their selling rate is decreasing not increasing and they have virtually no first party library to justify a purchase. They'll struggle to sell 5 million this year if any. The xbone is doomed, MS is going full PC soon.

Yes it's true that gaming has become more mainstream but there aren't any genesis sold anymore, that's not the case with the xbox. The xbox is only 3 years in , the genesis had a lifespan of 9 years.

Also, the genesis didn't sell very well compared to the nes and the snes for instance, the nes sold 60 million, the snes sold 50 million. Yet the genesis was never considered a failure.

@Desmonic:

I know but it's a more reasonable metric than considering the failure of one system based on the success of another. It's not a mutually exclusive affair. A system is allowed to be successful in itself.

We can consider the Xbox One less successful than the PS4 as a way of looking at it but immediately stating the Xbox One's sales abysmal without all the metrics is also jumping the gun a bit. :P (It's also simply cynical language. Video games is our hobby, after all. We're supposed to be supportive of our own hobby).

I think the console market isn't very tempting market to jump in at the moment, considering the initial costs are quite huge and the competition is rather tough, better just focus on mobile for very low effort and ridiculous profit!

Lol MS's xbone is the equivalent of the Pontiac Aztek, not only is useless and irrelevant but it will probably take MS out of the console market like the Aztek did to Pontiac in the car market. Granted there are still some delusional fanboys of the Aztek out there but normal people just laugh at them.

Wait, so now Superdata is an acceptable source? The Sony fans were up in arms over Superdata stating that PSVR flopped hardcore saying Superdata doesn't count. Now they count? lol

Funny thing is, Gaf has the Xbox One at 8 million in the UK, so that already debunks what this data says, lol.

Xbox One 26 million * 2.+ == Playstation 4- 56 million

@charizard1605: The Pro flopping at least is to a degree explainable by the supply being way too small(its out of stock in most eu+japan) and I guess we can safely say that's not the case with the One..

consoles are more than hardware, there's also software, very expensive software, fifa legends for instance, at the moment they have a street value of 5k, in the beginning of the year you can double that amount.

If you think ms is going to leave the console market you're more delusional than I thought, by the end of the year, the only console that will matter will be the scorpio.

you must be out of your mind, you might as well ask ferrari to stop making cars since a ford fiesta sells better.

Lol MS's xbone is the equivalent of the Pontiac Aztek, not only is useless and irrelevant but it will probably take MS out of the console market like the Aztek did to Pontiac in the car market. Granted there are still some delusional fanboys of the Aztek out there but normal people just laugh at them.

consoles are more than hardware, there's also software, very expensive software, fifa legends for instance, at the moment they have a street value of 5k, in the beginning of the year you can double that amount.

If you think ms is going to leave the console market you're more delusional than I thought, by the end of the year, the only console that will matter will be the scorpio.

Yeah software that MS doesn't have (another reason why no one cares for it). The first 3 months of this year Sony has more exclusives than MS during the entire year. There's literally no area where the PS4 is not slaughtering the xbone. It's just funny that lems haven't noticed lol.

Sounds fine to me, high-profile Xbox One games, whether multiplatform or console exclusive often sell well and I regularly see them them up there alongside PS4 games on the Amazon sale charts.

Forza Horizon 3 is apparently the most successful Forza game to date. How much it sold on console or PC only, I have no idea, but the bottom line is that games sell very well on Xbox One so it really makes no difference to me whatsoever that the Xbox One sold 26M or more, its good enough for me for the games that I enjoy playing online I find matches online instantly. All good on my end

No wonder MS never shows off their numbers, because its embarrassing. I like how Lemmings think Scorpio is going to change everything , that they think developers are going to make scorpio games run at native 4k lol. Sorry lemmings, but developers are going to upscale to 4k, since their cash cow (PS4 Pro) is like close to 60mill right now
