Microsoft is moving "full speed ahead" on its next generation console, an internal email from Xbox president Sarah Bond has revealed.

The email, obtained by Windows Central and verified to be genuine by Microsoft, also announced the formation of a game preservation team at Xbox.

"We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation," Bond said, reiterating comments made in February when the console's existence was officially announced.

No further information was shared regarding the hardware itself, nor when fans might be able to buy it, but documents leaked in 2023 suggested Microsoft plans to release the next Xbox in 2028. Regardless, with Microsoft seemingly making its development a priority, it will likely be available sooner rather than later.

Alongside it looking to the future, Xbox also appears committed to the past and present. "We have formed a new team dedicated to game preservation, important to all of us at Xbox and the industry itself," Bond said in the email.

"We are building on our strong history of delivering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to bringing forward the amazing library of Xbox games for future generations of players to enjoy."

Wowza, looks like Xbox is still committed to their fan base, which is good. Thoughts, SW? Do you think we’ll see a new Xbox soon? Would it be wise to release a new one so soon? Nintendo did it with the Wii U.

"If this were the outcome, I don't believe we'd still be in the business."

Wenzen told the FTC that Microsoft needs PC and cloud to reach far higher numbers in a faster time frame. He hopes that this can be achieved by fiscal year 2027

Meh...lazy 3rd party Devs are incapable of developing for an Xbox that will be the 'biggest generational leap'...shit...they can't get a much more powerful console(series X) to out perform the weakstation 5.

My account is so meaningful, that you want it gone at all costs. I get it, tho, truth seekers such as myself, we're very important in gaming. Without me, you'd be playing Halo Infinite and Starfield, while telling yourself they're the best games ever made. Instead, the likes of me, we expose filth, and that might ruffle some feathers, obviously.

Be grateful that i am as knowledgeable as i am. I take this very seriously, as you might imagine.

If their answer for their next gen system is "same as the xbox 1 and Series just more powerful" then they will be in for another hiding. They better have more than just terraflops and services and teh cloud.

They also really really need to sort out their developers. On paper they are now a titan. But, in practice, they are a very ill titan. Their IP is not landing any hits and their output tends to create just more bad press at the moment.

Great to see some work going on around games preservation but boasting about BC and playing old games with old controllers on new systems is....well...it's REALLY boring.

Xbox already said they were developing new hardware way back in 2020 and reiterated that statement a year later:

as far as FTC quotes, it's clear both parties were posturing in order to make a better case either for or against the ABK deal.. for Microsoft, their own narrative was "Xbox is doomed" and "can't compete" without acquiring ABK and for Sony, it was "PlayStation is doomed" and "can't compete" if ABK got acquired by Microsoft..

but clearly, Xbox always planned to continue with making hardware and PlayStation is clearly not going anywhere so cheery-picking FTC quotes is just an exercise is being disingenuous..

MS naming Xbox One was hardly better than what Nintendo tried to name the Wii U which was the worst name to say the least. Xbox Series name is fine, but I do agree MS needs to come up with a better name next time.

Gens can last as long as it needs to be when the technology is ready. Regardless if this gen needs to be sort or last longer, it is the games that will determined if next-gen console is ready for it.

Unfortunately, the main problem is these current-gen games are just taking so long to develop, it will most likely kill the waiting time on how long this gen will last. Development time is the problem, not weather this gen needs to be cut short or last longer.

Anyone thinking were gonna see something like this from Xbox 360/PS3/Wii era are setting up for disappointment due to development time is the new reality.
