Lets see WRPG's releasing on 2016:

Mass Effect Andromeda

Dues Ex Mankind Divided

Horizon Zero Dawn

Divinity:Original Sin 2

The Witcher Blood and Wine (DLC)

Then we got Jrpg's releasing on 2016:

Final Fantasy XV

Persona V

Dark Souls 3

Scalebound

Kingdom Hearts 2.8

I'm going with wrpg's as Mass Effect Andromeda and Deus Ex Mankind Divided will be available on PC. Although i really wish to play Final Fantasy XV, Persona V very much, i don't own a PS 4.

wbu? :)

How is Scalebound a WRPG?

But I go with wrpgs mostly. In the case of something like Divinity I couldn't stay with it because turn based just bores the shit out of me

I am with cRPGs.

  • Underworld Ascendant
  • Bard's Tale IV
  • Torment: Tides of Numenera
  • New Divinity game?

But between those 2, I would go with jRPGs.

I played mostly Vangaurd (with Bonus Assault Rifle skill ) , then Soldier on Insanity ( with Bonus Singularity Skill ). I had Female Shepard, On both Paragon and renegade. On Renegade i killed Wrex, Council, NPC's ( side quests, whom i could've saved lol ). on ME 2 went with ME 1 paragon save :P

Scaleblund is a JRPG. The WRPG side includes an expansion for an already released game. The JRPG side misses games like Dragon Quest XI, Ni no Kuni 2, and Star Ocean 5.

Honestly, none of those particularly interest me. I don't play a lot of RPGs, but when I do, they're western. Really, only the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games have really capture my attention in that realm. I just like sandbox games in general.

Anyway, my answer here is JRPGs. As awesome as Mass Effect will be,

  • It will almost certainly get delayed into 2017
  • It alone cannot compete with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Ni no Kuni, Scalebound, and most importantly, Persona 5.

That's a pretty close one. WPRGs have Mass Effect: Andromeda, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Kingdom Come and Horizon: Zero Dawn next year. But there's plenty of great JRPGs coming too- Dragon Quest VII, VIII, XI, Final Fantasy XV, Persona 5 and Dark Souls, to name a few.

It certainly looks like JRPGs win here, purely because of sheer quantity if nothing else (plus I'm digging all the 3DS love and my hype for P5 is uncontrollable), but given my personal bias for Mass Effect, and how good Deus Ex and Horizon look, I'm gonna have to say it's a tie :P

Either way, it's gonna be a great year for RPG lovers like myself.

JRPGs. Right now all the WRPGs have going for them (to my knowledge and as far as my interests go) is Mass Effect Andromeda, which if it's anything to the standard set by the previous games might be up for my favorite RPG of the year. However as far as the rest of the year goes it's all JRPG. I mean, Project X Zone 2, Bravely Second, SMT4: Final, Fire Emblem Fates, SMT x FE, Dark Souls III, Persona 5, Final Fantasy XV, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Scalebound. Plus I've still yet to play Xenoblade Chronicles X, Final Fantasy Type 0 from last year. Frankly there's too much JRPG that I want to play but I'll be lucky if I make it to half of them.

If there's an ounce of sense in you it's not a war.

I have time for them both, although I enjoy WRPGs better over the years. But so what?

Anything related to Mass Effect, I'm there on day 1. Scalebound looks interesting but I need to see more. Dark Souls 3 looks interesting too, but I need to finish Dark Souls 2 now as I put it on standby after playing for a few hours.

Dark Souls 1 took me around 90 hours to finish and I loved it, despite some frustrating moments at the beginning. It is the kind of experience I like to wait a little longer before embarking on another similar one....but I will play DS3 at one point just maybe not on release.

IT's not being produced by MS. It's being published, which means nothing. That's a JRPG. Taht being said, how is Horizon a WRPG? By your own logic, that should be a JRPG.

And looking at those lists, JRPG easy.

@Chutebox: i find the people I've spoken with that have complained do so out of the pointlessness of comparing 2 with 1. I make a point of trying to judge games on their own merits. Thanks i will try to get to it soon.

@charizard1605: I disagree with your list, it can compete against those games if you're only reviewing games, but sales will have bigger impact as Ni No Kuni and Personweeaboo 5 are very niche. The only title that can compete is FFXV.

The titles you have for WRPGs are barely RPGs. Divinity Original Sin 2 and Torment are and each alone make me more hyped than everything on the list combined. Do have soft spot for Tales of Berseria and Star Ocean 5 though.

Persona's a multi million selling franchise, I don't know how it's niche

Since the release of Persona in 1996, the series has sold 6.2 million units worldwide by the end of the 2014/2015 fiscal year, forming a large part of the total sales of the Megami Tensei franchise.

That includes the spinoffs, and add ons like FES and Gold. That's not an impressive number at all when you consider it's 4 persona games, reprinted, ported, 2 fighting games, a rhythm game, and recently an etrian odyssey styled game. A multi-million selling franchise? I mean sure, but not as it's actually going to put up a multi-million selling outing each time. Certainly aren't going to draw the money that The Witcher did this year, Fallout did this year, or Mass Effect, and chances are it won't sell as much as the PS4 sku (as in just the PS4 version, not also counting the X1/PC versions) of Deus Ex.

I agree, and I'm not comparing it to the larger selling WRPG franchises. But there's a difference between 'not as big as Mass Effect' and 'niche.' Niche is something like Virtue's Last Reward or Hotline Miami. Persona is bigger than niche, it's in that weird transitional zone between niche and mainstream.

Btw, 1.6 million of those 6 million come from the sales of the last mainline entry alone. Persona's growing, 5 could be the breakout. Not like a Fallout or Elder Scrolls level hit, but a verified big seller.

Please put Divinity 2 and Torment 2 on the WRPG list.

Also, yes, WRPG wins by miles.

I doubt it

Since the release of Persona in 1996, the series has sold 6.2 million units worldwide by the end of the 2014/2015 fiscal year, forming a large part of the total sales of the Megami Tensei franchise.

That includes the spinoffs, and add ons like FES and Gold. That's not an impressive number at all when you consider it's 4 persona games, reprinted, ported, 2 fighting games, a rhythm game, and recently an etrian odyssey styled game. Doubt what, exactly?
