Poll Would you buy a $600 980 GTX sporting console? (66 votes)

In a heartbeat! 1080p 100 fps FTW!! 59%
No way I love my $400 30 FPS 900p!!! 41%

If last gen was repeated (Xbox 360's 2005 Xenos raped all PC hardware) but this time with no BR taking all the cash would it be better?

Whats the problem with having horrific photorealistic scary games at 100 fps 1080p?

You pay $600 but you getting $1000 worth of hardware...

cpu would have to pretty cheap and low power to keep the power consumption and cost down.

I don't think any of the steam machine style computers have components that strong for that cheap.

**** yeah. As long as it had proper cooling. It'd be more power hungry than the 360 at launch but it'd make for a nice, long hardware cycle and eventually we'd get more efficient units.

No, because in order to have that GPU, for that price, every other component would have to be absolute shit.

Loss lead. Not that there was any chance of that after last gen bleeding money from Sony and MS, but it's just hypothetical.

I bet it would cost less to make than Ps3 at launch, no crazy CPU or new optical media.

Loss leading is pretty much the go-to in the console market, but that would be some heavy losses. Even hypothetically, I wouldn't want it... I imagine it being bigger than the X1, noisy and a complete bitch to cool. May as well just grab a PC :P

Wouldn't it be more efficient to go with a 970? Cost vs power between the 2 couldn't justify the 980.

That would be a fantastic deal.

It would probably have the power to run all PS4 and Xbone games in 4K and 60FPS.

Still not as heavy as the ps3 loss was, though. No exotic cpu or new optical media. I think each CELL cost something like $150, somewhere around there. And Blu-ray players alone cost at least as much as PS3 did so that was expensive tech.

And yeah like people are saying they could just use a 970 anyway. They would get a deal for buying in bulk as well.

Ps3's problem was it was not just $600, but slighty weaker than 360 and was a bitch to code for to boot.

If there was a console $200 more expensive than the other one, but 3-4x as powerful and making games for it was easy, things would be different. I just think in an era where people spend $600 on a hunk of junk marked up iphone, I don't think it'd have any problem selling.

I don't care about big consoles, I love the OG Xbox and the Ps3 phat looked really slick. Wouldn't be too hard to cool it, just a bit costly :p

Makes me wonder how much the ps4 and x1 cost to manufacture. Not sure about that card in a console just yet, though--the psu would be the size of an NES. 360 and PS3 made people stupid. No way would they sell something with potential fire hazards.

In 4 years Sony will release a $400 console that will annihilate a 980 GTX.

I'll enjoy 900p and 30fps today and wait for the PS5

A $600 console with a 980?

I assume that means it would have a $2 power supply that would malfunction and burn my fucking house down.

It would be a lot better than what we have now, at the same time, it's a lot for something you just use for gaming. At that price you can get quite a capable PC that can do more.

@DarthaPerkinjan: the ps4 is weaker than some cards from 2011 4 years ago.

So there unlikely to have anything matching a 980 in 4 years.

Of course I would, they would have to be losing a bit on each sold as the cpu and psu would have to be up to scratch as well.

Yes, but it won't happen and it depends on certain features. Will I have access to the same streaming apps (Netflix, Amazon Instant, etc) as I do now? Would I only be able to play games from Steam? Would it have an optical drive from which I can watch DVD/Bluray?

The options in this poll are terrible.

No thanks, I don't want any consoles period. Lack of power isn't the only reason why consoles suck - I don't want to be limited to a controller, not have any kind of access to the operating system, end up having to pay for online, pay more for games, and deal with all kinds of other limitations.

The PS4 could have the power of a GTX 980 for $400 and I still wouldn't want one.

No, that's way too much to pay for a console. None of them get nearly enough quality exclusives to justify more than $400, and $400 is really pushing it. I don't see myself ever spending more than $300 ever again.

Price isn't the big issue, heat is. I really Think Ps3 was more loss than this hypothetical 980 console.

Power and heat would require the console to be larger and louder than the consoles are now. It would also need a more powerful CPU as to not bottleneck the 980 and probably more RAM as 8 gbs of shared system won't be enough if you really want to utilize that power.

That's the thing with a console, it's not built just to be extremely powerful. They are slim form factor devices with multiple features. Their physical size and looks needs to be acceptable for your average home theater setup, they can't be too hot as most homes aren't going to put them in a spot with adequate cooling, they need to have some sort of large-space optical drive as internet connections worldwide are just not enough for a pure DD based console, and now they need to also include wi-fi so you don't have to run more cables everywhere. Finally they need to have a TV friendly OS and all of the software to easily tie these features together. This is why Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo develop custom OSs for their consoles. All of these has to be achieve at a consumer friendly price and still able to turn a profit.

This is why the CPU and GPU combo is important. They need to find a combination that they can safely shove in a small form factor console, build a custom board for, and then mass produce. PCs don't have those requirements. It's a really daft comparison to be constantly comparing gaming PCs, even low-end ones, to consoles. The requirements for a console to be a successful consumer item are way too high.

Sure you can put together a PC with more power than a console for roughly the same price, but you won't hit any of these other requirements. The market for game consoles doesn't care about raw power like PC gamers who argue against consoles do.

A 980 console would really go against what a console is supposed to be. It'll be big, loud, power hungry, and extremely pricey. It would be a huge failure.

How much power would a 980 + i5 haswell core draw in a closed console? Launch 360 drew about 180 watts.

The 360 did that same thing in 2005...

By having a GPU that rivaled the infamous X1900XTX you could NOT dream a PC even at $600 that rivaled the 360....

Even in 2007 you struggled to build such PC....

A console that would continue the past legacy would be amazing...

Look at this effin laptop card:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-980M.126692.0.html

The performance is amazing....

Would MS be prepared to blow $1000 on a $600 console that would 60/1080p double settings of the poor Sony's PS4? If MS did this Sony would be muscled out of the industry simple as that.

The 360 barely did that. It only had a powerful GPU because it was the first device on the market with a unified shader architecture. When Nvidia released the G80 series the 360 was promptly destroyed. In 2007 my 8800 GTS blew the crap out of the PS3 and 360.

The 360 and PS3 were also sold at a loss. The PS4 and Xbox One were not as nobody wants to take a loss when they don't have too. The PS3 and 360 weren't that profitable for many years. It's just not worth taking that loss.

You're also not considering the changes in the PC market since 2005. Since 2005 the gaming hardware market has exploded. Demand for more powerful GPUs have gone up as well as way more mid-range and low-end GPUs. PC gamers have no problem accepting a "mid-range" gaming PC to cost roughly $1000 with all of the parts. That's just what has happened in the market. PC gaming was less than a quarter of the size it is today back in 2005. Trying to compare the markets is just silly.

Nobody is going to take hundreds of loss on an overpriced console just to meet the demands of PC fanboys on the forums. Selling a console over $400 is a mistake Sony learned in 2006 and Microsoft learned in 2013. Your competition will undercut you and you will lose sales because most console gamers do not care if they are playing the best version of the newest games. They just want to play the newest games with a noticeable increase over the last console they had. The market hasn't changed in that respect. PC gamers have just gotten louder.

2007 $400 8800GTS? After 2 years?

Lets see what a late 2015 $400 GPU do to the poor Xbone?

Times have changed just because both console makers understood that console buyers mostly are clueless about tech...

But MS had the chance to kill sony with brute force since it can afford a loss.

Let me give you a scenario:

If the gap between consoles is as great as a PS4 with 7850 vs Xbone with 980M equivalent what 3rd party multiplats do?

EA doesnt make a new engine for PS4 just ports LAST gen PS3 FIFA/Madden...while the monster powerful Xbone (that rapes gaming PCs) gets the brand new FIFA made only for it.

What will happen when word gets out that Xbone has THE ONLY next gen multiplats while PS4 gets only last gen versions?

Look what happened to WiiU without any multiplats...
