Voted The Best DS Game of All Time, 999 was originally released in Japan on December 10th, 2009. I myself only had passing interest in the game, having borrowed it from a friend and buying it shortly afterwards.

Fantastic.

Never having been a huge fan of anime, I bought into the motivations and backstories of each character. I saw through the various rooms that tested each character's wits that they not only wanted to get off the ship they were on, but wanted to get off with or without everyone else surviving. People aren't all good. They're not all super serious protagonists either, as shown by so many games today.

Nope, we have nine people with nine hours to get off a ship. We have a super compelling tale that's worth anyone's time and money, even if you're even have a fleeting interest in the game.

We have a fantastic game and one of my favorites ever. Happy fifth, 999!

If we're going by a few tropes, sure. But the way the characters evolve over the game, the way that there's a lot of Western lore at hand, and a lot of other things make this not very anime.

Lol at calling 999 an anime, that's probably one of the most ignorant things I have seen on this board and that might be saying something.

That said, it's a very cool game, glad I gave it a chance. That ending, man.

It's close enough to anime, I dislike anime that much.

I understand that. generally speaking (believe it or not), I'm with you (though I've started to soften my stance in the last year or so).

That said, 999 is such an amazing game that it actually transcends its anime trappings and delivers an experience that is totally unique. As a PC player, you are going to appreciate this game more than most console players would, so I do urge you to give it a fair shot when you get the chance.

FYI, there's also a high resolution version on the iPad if you have one. Whether or not you'd like the iOS version depends on whether you want to play 999 mainly for the puzzles or the story (the story is the best part of the game, though). The good thing about the iOS version, besides the visuals, is the fact that it has a flow chart which makes it easy to see every outcome of your decisions. The worst part is it lacks puzzles, which means it's truly just a visual novel on iOS.

It has its pluses and minuses for sure. It's still powerful in its own right owing to the great story, but the lack of puzzles is a bummer. I was required to bring up the iOS version though because it's cheaper (only $5) and - as the most recent port of the series - the better it does, the more likely we are to see a sequel to VLR. :V

But seriously, the game looks interesting. Gonna have to check out more about it soon.

Cool plot, decent game.

I considered getting this to play a few months back, saw it mentioned and praised quite a bit in reviews and write-ups of Virtue's Last Reward. Haven't played either yet but would like to eventually. Game goes for $30 right now on Amazon, hopefully I can get it for about that much down the line if the price doesn't go up. Unfortunately there's more pressing gaming concerns for me right now but it's on my to do list.

It's not just the lack of puzzles that does it in, the ending loses its punch entirely because the entire game and its story is molded specifically for the DS hardware. I'd say more, but I'd risk spoiling the game if I did that.

And I don't think the sequel depends on the iOS version doing well at all. At this point, the Japanese publisher has made up its mind, if a sequel is made, it will be crowdfunded. Playing through the excised and decidedly inferior iOS version just to fuel some pipedream of a sequel is not a good idea, IMO.

I've listened to enough people I respect rave about this game that it's really an embarrassment I've never picked up a copy yet. Maybe I can get a late request into Santa!

Good story, but it's a terrible game.

After each ending, you have to play the entire game again, repeating the same dialogue and playing the same puzzles which all have the same exact same solutions. I actually almost put down the game completely once I got my first ending. It is a huge drag to playthrough the game to get to another ending. It's even worse if you get a repeated ending and have to play through the game again knowing that you accomplished nothing in that session.

It's true that the ios version removes the video gamey elements, but that's completely fine if you ask me. You still get dialogue and story choices and that's the important stuff in 999.

I thought perhaps you were talking about Valkyria Chronicles, but that came out in 2008 I believe. 999 is still pretty darn awesome.

System Wars even voted it the best rated game on a system that sold more than 150 million units and over 943 million games. But I'm sure it's fun coming to a gaming forum and telling everyone how you're purposefully ignorant of a game. Fun stuff!

Played it through till the first ending I got. Got rid of it...

Maybe I'll try and find myself a copy soon... then play Virtue's Last Reward on dat Vita.
