Microsoft has announced that Windows 11, the next generation for its industry-leading operating system, is set to launch on October 5. The new OS will be available for free for all Windows 10 users and be released in waves to customers.

Like the rollout for Windows 10, Microsoft will first prioritize new devices in the release for Windows 11. This means that on launch day you might not be able to upgrade immediately, with Microsoft saying that in-market devices will be prompted to upgrade in the weeks and months that follow. The upgrade process will be handled by the Windows Update Assistant, which will identify devices compatible with Windows 11 and notify users when they can update.

It looks like my PC wont get officially supported (First gen Ryzen) so it's windows 10 to the end by the looks of things.

It looks like win 10 will still be supported until 2025 so no major panic.

My laptop should be fine though (Zen 2). i probably will update that to windows 11 a few months after its release.

I will be upgrading to W11 as I did with W10.

@madrocketeer: Yeah. I'll definitely wait a bit before upgrading. Let them work out the bugs first. Expecting compatablility issues with some of my older games as well.

But hey, I like that we can upgrade for free now. That was not always the case.

Yeah, the Windows 10 free upgrade was a massive success, so I wasn't surprised they brought it back for Win11.

Don't think they had much of a choice, though, what with OSX and Linux pushing the free rolling updates and "OS as a service" model. Microsoft were in danger of being left behind.

LOL I'm planning to do another review like I did with W10 for Dummies but sadly, it's kinda out of date and it was meant to be funny on my end.

Right now games run slightly worse on 11 than they do on 10, I'll be waiting to upgrade.

I will update one of my systems. Most likely not the production comp.

Between DOS Box and ScummVM you can run apps from just about any era of DOS or Windows.

I’m going to hold off for a bit before upgrading. I want to see how well Auto HDR works. That’s something I’m interested in coming over to PC.

Will most probably update my laptop to it within the first month if not major problems arise. My desktop will not update to it anyways since I have a 4th gen Intel i7 CPU and it's my main "productivity" machine so it's probably for the better.

The fact that they are restricting which CPU gens are getting this update tells me that this could potentially be a smooth launch (on paper anyways). So here's hoping there's no major issues.

Since 2001 there's been Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and now soon to be Windows 11

According to Linus, Windows 11 is a bit behind Windows 10 in game performance. I'll hold off for now.

Sticking with 10 to see how 11 pads out further down the line.

I had a bunch of programs that wouldn't scale for crap. Like I couldn't get Photoshop to work right for a while, and then I had to mess around with the DPI settings to get it viewable, but there were still some programs that wouldn't scale to this day. That's why I'm kind of dreading how this will turn out.

Could not have said it better. It's just a cluster f*** of an operating system with zero design consistency. Without the software compatibility, literally no one would use Windows anymore.
