Poll Will you be getting a next gen system at launch no matter what? (123 votes)

Yes 37%
No 63%

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the PS5 at launch. They would have to mess up really bad for me to change my mind lol. That's how high my expectations are at the moment. I expect an affordable system with backwards compatibility with PS4, and a good launch title like Ghost of Tsushima. I also hope Nintendo launches a Nintendo Switch Pro with Bayonetta 3 at 60FPS. A man can dream - right, SW? What about you? Will you be getting a next gen system at launch no matter what?

Nah. I'm back into upgrading my PC, so i'll wait for a slew of exclusives for consoles this time. Those maybe famous last words, so let's hope I hold out.

I never buy at launch. Usually wait for at least one price cut.

No. Depending on how I'm feeling, I might even wait 6 months to a year to get one. It'll be PS5 as I've always stuck with Sony.

Embrace the two-year drought when a new console comes out, probably not.

No. Even with buying fewer games my backlog is hardly shrinking with how busy I've been this year. The last thing I need is another console to worry about. Most likely going to pass on the upcoming console gen.

Locking myself into a console launch no matter what is asking a lot. I'm with Speeny.

Hell to the no... Not interested in launch consoles this gen. I feel like it's gonna be crazy slow out of the gate and next gen consoles won't be must have purchases until the redesigns drop two tears into the life cycle.

That's my crystal ball.

I won't buy PS5 on launch day that's for sure and will wait 3/4 years once PS5 becomes mature enough to pull the trigger.

Probably not. But if something Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is a launch game only playable on PS5 ... I'm probably in.

Because they are going to be backwards compatible the hindrance is much lower than previous gen. Well at least for me.

Not sure. I usually do but this Gen was kind of a letdown, so I might wait and let the dust settle.

Yeah, but mainly for the VR upgrade. As soon as the PS5 comes out the PSVR becomes a legit high-end headset. And then we've got PSVR2 on the way after that.

Don't know yet as its too far away to even think about it, but......

The new Xbox will have Fable 4 & a new Forza (motorsport/Horizon) at launch so that's enough for me.

PS5: Maybe; it depends more on whether I have time to play any games during the launch window.

Xbox: 0% chance.

No, I'm done with consoles. And please, unless you're rich, don't buy a console at launch. Early adopters always get the raw end of the deal.

If there is a good exclusive at launch, I will get a PS5. Otherwise, I have no reason to buy it. No interest in Xbox console as I have a superior PC to play MS games. Nintendo is... Fuk whatever.

Nope!

My plan is to continue playing Switch and Xbox One stuff.

I also need to buy a PS4 in 2020 or 2021 so I can play those games I missed out on.

If I get the next Playstation or Xbox very likely it won't be until 2022. If Nintendo is still rocking it I might just skip them until they're real cheap.

Likely will buy a PS5, at least I'm planning to. But they could still f*ck it up and leave me uninterested to pick up right away.

Well, no. I'm gonna see if they're any good first. Not getting a PS5 or Xbox as they're a giant waste of money for a PC owner. Might get Nintendo's, we'll see.

Nope. I usually wait a couple of years, for several reasons:

  • Better choice of games
  • Possible price cut
  • A "pro" version

Nah. Learned my lesson with the Xbox One.

If I get one I'd wait 1 and half to 2 years in.

More games, lower price, stable hardware with lower risks of defects. And by that point the company won't change what the console is about (dropping kinect and exclusives).

M$ Definitely taught me that in most cases early adopting is a bit of a dumb thing to do.

Rumours of quite high price points coupled with the usual launch drought will probably be enough to keep me away at launch.

If you're going to do that you might as well buy it at launch. I waited like a year and a half for my 360, thought they had gotten all the kinks worked out, nope! Three red rings, and by the time I got a stable console the new version was out. Two years is the bare minimum you should wait if you're worried about bugs/waiting for a price drop or pro version. I mean, look at all the people in here talking about a Nintendo Switch Pro version. That's going to be at least three years after the original launched, if it ever materializes.

The Xbox 360 isn't a good barometer. It didn't get truly stable until the slim version.

Didn't even know a 'pro' version of the Switch was a thing.

A year outside of the launch Xbox One I had (so outside of the guarantee period), it developed a faulty fan and HDD issue where the HDD got super slow. M$ charge £100 to fix these simple things.

These issues always come because they're rushing to market, and they cheap out and cut corners to make as many units as they can. Also, I think they use some pretty awful thermal paste in consoles. It's always dry and hard when I open the console.

It doesn't help that M$ and Sony compete, because they're rushing against each other. The Xbox One definitely came out a year before it was ready. Games aside, the consoles software was so basic and bare bones. It struggled to play DVDs properly out of the gate. It didn't even have its full graphics api. They should have been ashamed of themselves charging that much for for something that was unfinished, just so they could compete. Think about it, in few other consumer markets are the consumers treated like this. It's not our job to beta test your console and wait for it to get to a standard. They've become so comfortable relying on the internet and have adopted the attitude of 'we'll finish the product later'.

I don't understand why so many people will wait years for a $50 price cut. Life is too short for all that.

No. I will wait until a few hardware revisions are released.

Not talking about mid-gen upgrades. Even a few months after launch they start tweaking the design making it more efficient and improving cooling. The longer I can wait the better the hardware will be.

So unless there is a From Software exclusive I'm going to hold off at least 6-12 months; longer if there are no games I want.

Nope.

Bought a PS4 a few months ago to play with friends and experience the exclusives.

Big mistake. The exclusives pale in comparison to the games out there for PC (multiplat or or exclusive, indie or AAA, doesn't matter), and I just hate controllers. Thought I could overcome the controller hurdle and for the most part I did, it's just I can't stop thinking "this would be so much better with mouse and keyboard".

So not only am I not buying a console--any console--at release, I probably won't be buying a console ever.

Yeah I often feel this way as well. What other industry or segment of commercial goods gets away with the kind of bullshit that the video game industry get's away with?

I love games but for the most part we are treated like shit.

They either view us as dumb, lazy, or with enough disposable income that we don't care.

Would be nice if our products were as well built as, I don't know, automobiles. Or had the quality standards of processed foods.

The last console I bought was 360 and PS3 and that was for my son, so nope, ill stick with PC, the best platform.

Doubt if I ever by a console again.

Probably. If they keep copying mobile game practices, things will look very grim indeed.
