God of War exceeds 10 million

Spider-Man sells over 13 million

Horizon Zero Dawn sells over 10 million

Last of Us 2 is fastest selling PS4 game

Uncharted 4 sold 16 million copies

Last of Us sales tops 17 million across PS3/PS4

Gran Turismo sells an estimate 8 million

I mean, damn.. their games have been really successful for the most part. Sure, they've had some games that didn't sell as well. But for the most part, their games are very popular. Wouldn't you agree, SW? What makes them so successful? I think they're just exciting and fun games to play.

Despite fanboy nonsense, the games are generally accepted as good to great games. Nintendo gets the same or better love too.

Good gameplay except on Horizon, don't know what that's all about.

Agreed. Imagine the transition from making linear first person shooters to a third person open world action game wasn't the smoothest transition during development. Hopefully 2 makes improvements.

@Juub1990: Nintendo keeps the game at full price and they sell like crazy.

Gran Turismo Sport, UC4, The Last of Us 1 and God of War are all PlayStation Hits games.

Marketing, brand loyalty, hype and market share. We have games like Call of Duty, GTA V, Minecraft, The Witcher 3, Borderlands 3, Mortal Kombat 11, Kingdom Hearts, Red Dead Redemption etc that use similar strategies for success.

For the most part I think Nintendo and Sony play enough video games themselves as a whole so that they can understand customer feedback. I can't recall anything recent that showed Sony and Nintendo were tone deaf to their audience.

A multitude of reasons. Good games, marketing, established fanbase, talented developers... Probably a bunch more little things.

They make the games people want to play.

I bought TLOU 2 and Ghost of Tsushima because they are complete games.

They don't have day one DLC, they don't come with a season pass, they aren't a live service. You play them day one and you get the complete experience.

I agree ! I think SONY does a really really good job marketing. Their way of showing a game is awesome. I think they make a great effort when it comes to solo games and games that people can get their hands on.

I respect that company for sure.

Sony games sell so much because they’re quality games. The reason Xbox doesn’t sell as many is because overall its games are not nearly as good.

But keep up the “unbiased” charade, it’s hilarious to see how butthurt Sony makes you

What riding is that? TLOU 2’s the fastest selling Ps4 game? It’s 94 meta?? I’m confused

More or less this.

We find ourselves in a gaming era in which everyone wants to create a "forever game" - a game that people play for years, online, often as some form of service with continuing transactions. Developers do this because revenue has the potential to be high for long periods of time with less risk.

But high quality single player experiences with strong story lines are still a desirable market. Sony went all-in on them this generation (in comparison to most of their peers), and the market that likes that segment responded.

Sure, that strategy isn't going to pull in the dollar-per-player-per-title that titles like Fortnite or GTA Online are going to, but it's still a strong and lucrative market which is why you're seeing the best offerings within it sell millions of copies.

More than anything I see these days: I see the principles of what constitutes a video game, challenged.

Video games have for the most part, always been defined by the gamey elements. There is a great drive these days that challenge video games that they don't just have to be games anymore, but interactive media.

Before video games there's always been that dilemma in movies that sometimes we just want to yell at the character on screen and tell them what to do, but movies have never been capable of that because they are not interactive mediums.

We live in a time of games vs. Interactive storytelling.

There's definitely appeal in both camps, and in my opinion we're eventually going to see the two splinter apart from one another where games are simply games and interactive media is simply interactive media.

I'm not sure we'll see a large bifurcation into two camps as you describe just because the arc of history in mediums is generally to take disparate genres and smear them together into a gradient. But yes, I do see some of what else you're talking - discussion about the finer points of games both new and old and appreciation of them - going on. Personally, I think it's great, and I think it's a sign of maturation of the medium/industry.

Drawing a parallel to the movie industry, early cinema isn't something that most people are going to want to revisit these days unless they're interested in the history of the medium. Silent films have technical deficiencies that most people find detract from the storytelling. A smaller camp feels the same about black and white film, or even campier effects from the 80s and early 90s. But as you progress up that scale, more and more people find entries within it that are worth revisiting for modern audiences.

And we're seeing some of that today. I'm seeing a lot more articles opining about Bioshock's storyline. There were a lot recently arguing the Borderlands 2 is better than Borderlands 3 not merely respective of their times but even to play right now (this would have been unthinkable 10 years ago given the respective ages of the titles). I read one last week about revisiting Bulletstorm (which isn't exactly a highly regarded masterpiece) in order to incorporate some of it's gameplay ideas into future shooters, and I've read similar pieces about the XBox 360's Nier and Lost Odyssey.
