Who's playing Samus Returns?

I played the first 90 minutes or so today and am very impressed. The most fun 3ds game I've played in a while. I'm actually new to Metroid but I always knew about the metroid style of gameplay. Tight gameplay and combat actually requires some precision. Presentation is really well done. I will be playing this until CupHead. Any SW warrior pick up this game? Thoughts? Impressions?

I'm splitting time between this and Yakuza Kiwami atm. I think it's pretty good aside from the control scheme; I really wish I could play it with a regular pad instead. Overall though, it's basically traditional Metroid which has been long overdue if excluding AM2R.

If I'm able to hit up a store that carrier it tomorrow I'll pick it up.

It's really good but it doesn't feel all that different from what I played in the past. Metroid 1, 2, 3, Fusion and then a remake of 1 and 2. Enough is enough with the 2D already!

2D Metroid is the only Metroid... same with Mario.

Although I strongly prefer 2D with those two franchises, I have enjoyed more than one 3D adventure.

aye its good. something is off with my 3DS analogue stick though which is making it feel a bit frustrating (an issue with my 3DS rather than the game i think). i havent played much yet though since this weekend is a mix up of metroid, Ys8 and mario xcom. good weekend :).

Just feels great to have a new, official 2D Metroid after so damn long.

Yes, I am playing it right now and I am enjoying it very much so far. It plays very familiar with the Metroid games we've already had, but I think familiarity is one thing that the Metroid series needs most of all right now before we get Metroid Prime 4.

Is this on Switch?

I'm playing it, but to be blunt it's struggling to hold my attention. I don't know what it is.....I think it's not the game so much as it is what I have to play it on. I despise action games on the 3DS, it's uncomfortable and my hands cramp. I have trouble with this for any extended period, especially when the shoulder buttons are so heavily utilized. I'm not too keen on the art style either. It's hard to stomach after having enjoyed Ori. The 3D is neat, but I don't see it adding so much to the gameplay that sprites and an art-style with a bit more personality and detail would've sufficed. The animation is rough, and the environments bland.

I had some trouble with the artstyle too. But as I got further into it, I started to really like the game. I have 27 metroids left to exterminate, and I have only found 2 energy tanks. I refuse to use the Aeion stuff. Even with that stuff I bet the game is pretty hard. I feel like I missed an ability to go through the red plants... but so far I can still make it through with the 2 tanks.

No, but it should be. I'm a bit annoyed I have to go back to my 3DS just to play this.

There is one way to deal with the red plants.

the thunder shield aeion ability would allow you to safely navigate that stuff. Haven't gotten super far in the game myself so I don't know if anything else protects you from the red plants

I'm enjoying it so far.

I'm glad they finally 'explained' why the water drains every time you clear an area. In the original Gameboy game, it just kind of vaguely happened in the background, without this Chozo DNA technology stuff. It ended up being easy to misjudge when you can progress to the next area.

I also now remember how much I enjoyed spider ball-ing *everywhere* in the original, looking for all of the hidden rooms far up in the huge chambers.

As for the Aeion abilities, I like the idea of the lightning armour. I'm less sold by the new counter ability, but hey, it works.

I never liked the Metroidvenia genre, so I'll pass.

Got to the morph ball and put it down to save the greatness for my vacation in 2 weeks. I took about 20 mins just in the opening menu... the theme music was fantastic! Great title track!!

I'm totally rocking the New 3DS in one hand and a Nintendo Switch in the other hand, and it feels good man. Not gonna lie, I still love my 3DS, and if they continue to make quality games, I will continue to buy games for it.

I grabbed it too. Its a really good game i just cleared the first 5 metroids out. Them rhino bug things are a pain in the ass

@ominous_titan: freeze them. Then shoot them with a missle.

The rhino bug things remind me of the ones in Ori and the Blind forest.

yeah, I mean, no harm in putting this on 3DS as well, I don't think anyone begrudges them that, but also put this on Switch, jfc. My hands are contorted right now

I dont see the point of buying this game.

If I want to have old skool Metroid fun, I can download top 100 Metroid levels for Mario Maker, for free, and have hours of Metroid fun with them. For free.

Yeah, sorry. Paying full price for somethig like Samus Returns is madness, IMO. It should've been 9.99$ download only game.

When the Theme of Samus Aran first started playing, I legitimately got goosebumps.

That seems strange. I mean, you care enough about the series to consider playing fanmade Mario Maker tributes to it, but you don't want to play the real thing? Huh.

I guess if you're really determined to spend $10 on an old-school Metroid experience, you can always just purchase the Virtual Console release of Metroid 2. This one's better though.

I have a 3DS and interest in the game, but honestly I want Nintendo to port/remake it for Switch.

Yeah its not bad. Seems a bit easy so far. I'm only in area 3 but I feel like I'm smashing through it quickly. Music is weak though, compared to the original, and the controls are a bit of a pain.

Same here, man. If I buy the game and they shortly after announce a Switch port, I'd be severely annoyed.. If you have any plans for this, Nintendo - please tell me.

It's sitting in my collection but I haven't played it yet. Hopefully I will be able to get around to playing it shortly.

If nintendo was to port this game to the Switch it would defeat the purpose of supporting the 3ds. Plus with the use of the touch screen it might not work on the switch.

Like the other person mentioned, the hand cramping with the 3DS is problematic which affords me an hour of play until I require a rest. Besides the flaw of the hardware, the game is solid on all fronts and looks so much better than any online trailer could ever present.

I must be the only person in the world not getting hand cramps from this game. And it's not like I'm immune to getting them either, because there have definitely been games that tortured my hands on the 3DS.

Ugh, it kills me this isn't on Switch! I very much love the Super Metroid type games. Come on Ninty, daddy wants to play this with that dank Pro controller.

As a dude who's played Monster Hunter on 3DS for 800+ hours, I will probably handle Metroid quite well. :P
