I wouldn't call Zelda an RPG.

Nor Star Wars Jedi, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, Lies of P, Wo Long.. Might as well call pretty much all games ever an RPG.

I wouldn't put Zelda in this category. It's an action-adventure game.

I hope Baldurs Gate 3 is the RPG of the year. If they maintain the quality from the Early Access over the next few acts, I can't see anything else beating it this year.

Zelda and Jedi Survivor are not RPGs. Final Fantasy XVI also barely qualifies as one, from what I heard.

Hogwarts Legacy plateaus and ends flat. Lies of P, Starfield and Baldur's Gate III are not released yet.

Seems a lot of gamers still have zero clue what a role-playing game is. But thats ok, yall leave that stuff to the professionals. Yall just stick to playing games instead of making games.

No, it seems that "RPG" isn't what people want to use for Zelda, and you're acting like people don't understand what an RPG is.

@Litchie: Nintendo has called Zelda a role-playing game since the day it was created. Zelda also follows the characteristics of a role-playing game and hench is a role-playing game. Gamers be fucking clueless as always.

Starfield is clearly Action RPG.

I hope its lords of the fallen. If not, for me its most likely gonna be the PC EXCLUSIVE Starfield.

@Maroxad: Why not? Its has everything an RPG has. Tears of the Kingdom has upgradeable equipment with stats, dialogue choices, buffs from food, enemies that "level up" and scale with the world, weapons with stats that progress as you go forward, weapon durability, a max health/stamina mechanic.

How much in common with D&D does Zelda have?

Now lets look at the ways it contradicts.

• Zelda is about problem solving and puzzles.
• You play as a predefined character, Link (you can't even rename him like you could in earlier Zeldas).
• You don't level up. You dont even have any attributes to speak of.
• Avatar strength plays next to no role in any part of the game, it is purely rooted in player skill.

Yeah, it's not just some random quote though. He gave his reasoning (multiple times) and the things he spoke about regarding RPGs and Zelda are still relevant today. Still applicable to the latest Zelda titles.

Anyways, don't care for the "what is a RPG" argument. Just pointing out how your appeal to authority fallacy actually works against you here.

Baldur's Gate III. Completed Chapter 1 and I am so overwhelmingly impressed.

I think some of the replies pretty much cover why this thread is a disgrace and disqualify classifying both Tears of the Kingdom & Jedi Survivor aren't RPG to begin with...especially Jedi Survivor as hardcore Star Wars fans such as myself never ever saw Jedi Survivor an RPG at all!

Anyhow, I'm not voting as this is a silly thread of the day.

It's more likely gonna be TotK. Funny how people voted for Starfield though even though it's not out yet.

I never thought of LoZ as an RPG ever, though fantasy is a staple trope of RPGs. Though I guess since BotW it's probably more so an RPG than it ever was. But people have been calling it an RPG for ages, ugh, that always annoyed me.

I hear FFXVI is barely an RPG and more a brawler / hack-n-slash, and not even a good one at that.

I'm guessing praise will go to Tears of the Kingdom from various outlets as their GOTY or RPG of the year.

But I think as long as Starfield doesn't bomb so bad it's forgotten as quickly as Redfall, it'll be the talk of the town from lovers and haters alike.

I never considered Zelda games as RPG's. Zelda games are Action Adventure games with RPG elements. Just because it has RPG elements in the game doesn't make it an RPG, it's an Action Adventure game.

Gotta say: I've played a lot of ZToK, but I must have missed the part where it's an RPG.

If Larian is up to their usual standard, Baldur's Gate 3 has a good chance.

That's a big lie. Miyamoto has repeatedly stated that Zelda is not RPG in multiple interviews over the decades. And he has also repeatedly stated that he doesn't even like the RPG genre either. He has never considered Zelda a role-playing game.

Miyamoto has occasionally been critical of the role-playing game (RPG) genre. In a 1992 interview, when asked whether Zelda is an RPG series, he declined but classified it as "a real-time adventure"; he said he was "not interested in [games] decided by stats and numbers [but in preserving] as much of that 'live' feeling as possible", which he said "action games are better suited in conveying". In 2003, he described his "fundamental dislike" of the RPG genre: "I think that with an RPG you are completely bound hand and foot, and can't move.
