I mean a story that really makes you think. Before I would have named any bioware game, and feel confident with that. But their stories suck nowadays, primarily da2 and me2 (i dont know why this got so many awards for it, the whole game was basically about recruiting people). Imma have to say the witcher

I actually missed the part that this is about RPGs, and just listed games in general
But I still stand by ME (both 1 and 2) as an RPG. Not only does it have a system of stats, levelling, and cIasses, but essentuially role playing as your own character.

Final Fantasy XIII, as confusing as it is at first, once you wrap your head around it it is a very interesting story. I am a little biased in that statement however as I am a sucker for stories like that.

I think Dragon Age II...and yes, its even better written and far more powerful than the Witcher. I do note many similiarities between the two, however, DA II goes further into "man vs nature" style plot, which is VERY RARE in games. Its also one of the darkest RPGs I have ever played, by far Bioware's darkest work. It even goes so far to suggest that your allies can be just a big or even bigger villians than the antagonists.

Bioware and Bethseda's are the best RPG story makers this generation in my opinion.

Even if you don't think ME2, or DA2 is an RPG, or Bethesda's games are overstated.

I still think those two developers make the best in the industry, and we'd be in a world of hurt (more like boredom) if they were not around.

Can't speak for Witcher as i've never played it.

I just started playing The Witcher, and I'm already stoked about The Witcher 2. :) If you're an RPG fan that loves to sink into another universe for hours on end, I highly recommend it.

On topic: I'm going with Mass Effect. I actually prefer Mass Effect 2 for many reasons, but the main plot of Mass Effect is better than it's sequel, IMO. And I consider them both to be RPGs, but it doesn't really matter if they can't be pigeonholed into a specific genre-- they're fantastic games.

  • NIER
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Final Fantasy XIII - Convoluted & a lot of what I ended up finding out was outside the game (I'm not sure where/if it is in the game) but it's story is actually quite good

Haven't played TWEWY yet but desperately want to. I've heard nothing but praise & it's story is supposed to be great.

Nier, easily.

Slashkice

Recently got done with the game, And while I can see the game having the best story it just has far too many awkward and forced moments. really good game though, and still the story (and storytelling) is pretty good.

as for the topic, I really couldn't say. I need to play some more rpg's :P

Mass Effect 2. And ME2 is in fact a role playing game. You build a character, manage stats, and roleplay. How is that NOT a role playing game? If anything, I'd say we should start disqualifying games as RPGs if they do not contain any actual roleplaying (many JRPGs would be serious offenders in this aspect). Maybe we should start referring to non-RPGs as "combat statistic management games."

Why I pick Dragon Age II

Its a very personal story, its far more about relationships than most games. The rivalry path gives a whole new perspective in characterization.

It breaks free from cliche.....especially compared to the original.

It rivals and even surpasses the Witcher in grey morality.

Its very well written (except for some of the romances), the dialogue is incredible and moving. Maybe the best written Bioware game since Baldur's Gate II and crushes any Obisidan game in the writing department.

Its the darkest and saddest Bioware game, and maybe the saddest WRPG. This does not have a happy ending. And Merrill.....

The characters break free of cliches, contribute to the plot well, and really put the anti in antihero. Anders gets special mention, I mean...what he does at the end of the game will be talked about.

FFXIII's story was awful, not only was it idiotically convoluted, the characters are terrible outside that token black character.

Did you actualy play all the way threw it, or just play a couple hours and quit? I have heard and read many reviews where they only played half way (or less) and decided the story was to conveluded. One guy was literally one stage away from having everything start to make sence. It is part of the fun. If a mistery novel gave away the murderer in the first chapter It would be a terrible book. On topic however (and I am suprised nobody has said it yet) ES4: Oblivion. It had everything. Not only is it my favorite current gen rpg, It is my favorite game period. The Main plot might not be the absolute best, but it is way up there. My favorite sub plot is the dark brotherhood. That is seriously one of the best sories ever. If you don`t like that one, maby the thieves guild`s deep back story, or any of the DLC`s imersive storys will do it for you. That is what I like about Oblivion. If you don`t like what you are doing, you can do something else.

FFXIII didn't really pull off convolution well, though. And even by the end of the game some things were still kind of confusing.

Although I didnt find FFXIII THAT convoluted, really. If anything FF Tactics is harder to follow than FFXIII was.

^ummm...Unless you've been in a box and haven't played a single JRPG for the last like 30 years, then I can see FFXIII's story being good, but it was pretty cliche, predictive, uninspired.

FFXIII gets special mention in that they take an original setup and tell it as cliched and predictable as possible. The writing is also atrocious.

The Witcher. The reason ME2 was so compelling is not because of the main story, but the side stories of the characters, coupled with excellent dialogue s and overall great storytelling.
