[QUOTE="Shafftehr"]You know, all of these "badass" characters seem so contrived these days... Like they're trying really, really hard to be badasses. You want to see a real badass? Go back and watch Dirty Harry and get off the jock of all these characterless facsimiles. They are basically the Michael Bay movies of badass - all flash, and no substance. You want to see a badass in video gaming? Play Planescape: Torment until you meet the character named "The Practical One." That guy sends chills down one's spine.Shafftehr
Have you played any of the MGS games? This is a question, not an attack. Because Snake is not the kind of face-ripping, blood-drinking guys that have been mentioned.
You don't know much about my posting history, do you? I consider MGS, as a series, to be some of the most sensationalist preying-on-hormonal-teenaged-males tripe that you could possibly encounter. The writing is poor, the characters are sensationalist, stereotypical crap (and unlike Harry, none of them have the benefit of having created a stereotype - not that they're a fraction as good at it anyways, so cool and noncommital while doing badass things). Got to admit, I've only played through I and II conclusively, and just dabbled in the the laters ones... But, you don't come back to a series you consider garbage for long.
I've got to say, I consider it probably the most overrated series I know of. So, if you're planning on selling Snake as some sort of character I'd conceive as badass, you're barking up the wrong tree. You're absolutely right, I do not know a single thing about your posting history.
Play 4. Play all of 4. Your opinion may not change much, but it is much more serious than the previous games. There are the fantastical characters, sure, but the portrayal of Snake getting old and living and dying with it, it is very emotional and very well done, rivaling some films in my opinion. You should realize that to the medium of videogames, it is a huge step in what videogames have been previously percieved to be.
As for Planescape: Torment, I haven't played that, though I guess I should seeing as how it seems to be the only thing you enjoy in gaming. It sounds great, and I look forward to the day I play it.
