When will see see NEXT gen visuals? What do you expect?

For me Battlefield 3 on PC was the first game that introduced 'next gen' visuals and gameplay that separated itself from the previous 'generation/era' of gaming thats loosely dependent on console power.

Maybe the Nintendo NX Mario title (which is confirmed in development) will offer Pixar animation quality visuals in real time for the first time?

ZombiU, as far as gameplay goes. It effectively used the tablet, something Nintendo has yet to figure out. Same goes for W101, but to a lesser extent.

Visuals? I don't know. There's so many great looking games out there. Crytek usually leads the charge. For example, Ryse. Shit looks good.

Star Citizen. May be Witcher 3 too but Star Citizen is taking everything to the next level (from gameplay to visuals... everything).

I still haven't had my wow moment this gen. The closest thing would be Mario Kart 8, but I don't have a Ps4 and witcher 3 in my hands yet.

But yeah, I think Nintendo will be able to make near flawless colorful cartoon like graphics next gen. If Rare makes a Banjo 3, that should look incredible on the Xbox 1 hardware.

@DarthaPerkinjan: I think people who aren't impressed by the new consoles haven't played the old ones in a long time. And I'm not talking posting still images; those are a crapshoot, I'm talking actually playing a game from last gen.

Star Citizen has a chance. Unreal Tournament on the UE4 is going to be freaken beautiful too.

I've already seen better than last gen on new consoles.

i think we are like one gen away from how i envision next gen graphics. i want to see better textures, especially character skins I want realistic looking pores. Oh and hair with physics...i like seeing strands

environments are looking super gorgeous already and there still could be improvement but i think characters are whats still lagging behind

Star Citizen has a chance, but it might not be that apparent since it's, you know, mostly space. you need dem foliagé, lighting and particles. Witcher 3 will surely look nice, but maybe not epicly-future-proof-beef-your-toasters-nice like the original Crysis did back it the days. my money is on the next pc-first title (even if it comes to consoles). let's see.

PC is already displaying graphics that are uber realistic. I'm not sure what you want really. Even PS4 and X1 have some really good looking games. DAI was a bit weird, incredible environments and the stupidest looking characters of any videogame ever. I'm pretty sure that's not a technology limitation just graphic artists with absolutely no clue. But yeah, get a high end PC that's ready for 4K and it doesn't get any better than that.

You couldn't do infamous or Driveclub on any console last gen. If you're waiting for a revolution this gen, you're unlikely to get it until VR headsets swing on by. Otherwise you will get slightly better looking HD, better lighting and less jaggies for the time being.

PC doesn't abide by gens. For the simple reason that there isn't one PC box. People build their own. You can have one that's relatively cheap, or one that is exorbitant. You can build one before the gen starts, or mid gen, when the consoles are years old. The games reflect this. They do not correspond with the limitations that consoles have. So you can't include that in any gen. PC will always be one step ahead in that regard, because it can cater to people who can afford the best and consoles cater to everyone.

By definition, next gen is whatever the new consoles can handle. Next gen doesn't apply to PC. So Star Citizen will be beyond next gen if anything.

Games I've seen that are clearly next gen visually are Ryse, The Order, Assassins Creed Unity, DriveClub, Killzone Shadow Fall, Bloodborne, Sunset Overdrive, Infamous Second Son. To come are The Witcher 3, Batman, Final Fantasy 15, Unreal Tournament, Quantum Break, Uncharted 4, The Division. You know, if a game is coming to PS3 and 360, it isn't next gen.

I think Star Citizen is the biggest contender.

The Order 1886 is the first game to truly show these graphics - and that's the kind of game you get when you ask for a disproportionate focus of graphics.

The key factors are physically based rendering and global illumination. Only a few games have used both of these so far, e.g. Ryse, The Order, MGS5, FFXV, Unreal Tournament, Star Citizen. The more effectively they can be used, the more next-gen a game will look.

The Order looks as next gen as anything I've seen so far. I don't think I understand gamers anymore.

We're only going to truly see next gen visuals when last gen support dwindles. The leap happens every gen. So far, from what I've seen-

Wii U- Captain Toad Treasure tracker, MK8, DKCRTF. Edit- NintendoLand looked damn good.

Xb1- Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, Dead Rising 3 (not the best looking game, but the hoards of zombies were ridiculous. You'd much trouble finding as many AI on screen anywhere else), COD-AW, Ori.

PS4- Infamous SS, KZSF, The Order 1886.

With that said, I have to be honest and say this gen is actually the most disappointing. Microsoft didn't launch with Halo, no new God of War for PS4, too many remasters and it seems Nintendo's the only one of the big 3 supplying quality exclusives.

How much more realistic do people honestly expect videogames to look?

They're NEVER going to be so highly detailed that you can't distinguish them from real life.

People who are saying you cant play game games like infamous or bloodborne on the 7th gen does not mean the leap is all that great. It does not take much to pass the 7th gen but to blow it out of the water it has not come close yet.

We already saw them, maybe you're blind. Games like The Order 1886, Driveclub, Ryse, Infamous SS look way better than any game last gen. If you seriously think those games don't look better than last gen then I don't know what to tell you.

I expect a next gen game to not use the omega shitty FXAA.

Already did. Ryse, AC: Unity, Order. If you expect Xbox One and PS4 to deliver a huge jump over those you will be dissapointed

Judging from Attila that cant be done on any consoles (I even doubt PS5) and the fact that CA said its new engine TW3....I can bet it will scare people.

We havent come close to the jump we had between ps2 to ps3.

I'm going for The Order: 1886. Looks really great from what I seen hell, even AJ said it himself that it's the beautiful game he ever seen on then any other PC games he's played on.

Is the order stuck to very small rooms and corridors? If so it does not count at all because of the limited space it was created in.

I'm starting to get confused with the meaning for that "next generation" thing now, maybe I'm used to PC gaming - there's no such thing as "generation" on PC. The visuals just gradually improves on PC while console gamers has to wait for 5 years to get the improvement.

Depends on how you'll look at it but while I have beef with Order: 1886, it's only saving grace is it's graphics on how PS4 can be but sadly, this is a tech demo that came late and it was very liner, and so on for being just a movie then a game it should have been. The Order: 1886 is without a doubt, the best looking game on PS4 and Forza Motorsport 5 is also a good looking game as well.

@davillain-: Though the point is ,it might be very nice looking but given is limited area can the ps4 pull that same level of fidelity in a skyrim size game.

@Elaisse: To be honest, I haven't seen any game come close to the size of Skyrim having the best graphics as seen on Order: 1886. For that to happen, it would required for a game to be in development for 5-8 years considering The Order: 1886 was in development for 5 years.

Star Citizen is the true start to "next-gen".

These wimpy consoles can barely produce 1080p30 games.

this. I just booted up Red Dead on my PS3 on my 50" TV. I thought GTA V on PS4 had jaggies but Red Dead is very very bad in terms of image quality.

I mean Ryse and The Order are gorgeous visually and next gen to me. Mortal Kombay is a gorgeous game, BloodBorne, there's quite a few games that give the feeling of playing on next gen. I don't know what gamers nowadays want. They rather complain and keep looking for the future rather than see what's out now and appreciate what's out there.

Shouldn't the question be "When will we see graphics that start to define this gen?", as the term "Next Gen" is like tomorrow, something to come and not something that's current. But to answer this question, for PC we will see next gen graphics in a couple of years and for consoles, when the first next gen console comes out.

Games on my rig are already "Pixar" quality in my opinion. Better sometimes.
