FATAL FRAME Trilogy (PS 2).
Well?

I think technically Castlevania qualifies as horror just because it draws inspiration from so many horror classics like Dracula and Hammer Horror, so technically speaking, Rondo of Blood or SOTN would be mine.
But given that it doesn't go out to make you afraid, the actual jump scares thing never really interested me. I don't like feeling powerless which is kind of important for a lot of horror titles. I suppose it would be fatal frame 2 on PS2 or resident evil 4 but even then that was because I wasn't scared at any point.
@indzman: One thing I can never get past on horror games, which speaks volumes for my stubborn, flawed personality, is the idea that you can and should run away from enemies without killing them first. I can't do it. I feel like it's still out there.
Silent Hill(1,2,3) , Dead Space 2, Outlast, Alien Isolation , Resident Evil(the earlier ones that were more survival horror), I'm sure I'm missing some more.
@indzman: Haha yeah lol, the reason I didn't mention Castlevania is because it doesn't really scare me. I see it more as an action-adventure series. Castlevania 2, Simons' quests probably gave me a horror vibe though if memory serves me right.....Super Castlevania 4 too probably, it had a dark gritty feel. ...just not too scary for me, that's all :)
Used to play horror games so much but I really can't think of many I have really enjoyed. Resident evil 1 and remake are probably my favourite. Alien Isolation was good for a recent game. STALKER if that counts? The STALKER games are amazing.
I really liked fatal frame on ps2, I've got 2 on wii but its still sealed. The Wiu project zero is u believably dull..
Those games like Outlast etc are utterly dreadful, but amnesia was ok but I don't find any of these games scary in the slightest..
I'll get Resi 7 in the steam Halloween sale.
FEAR 1 is great. I just think all these horrors do the same old thing and I end up tutting at them rather than enjoying them, let alone being scared however, id rather to to a horror game than a film these days as horror films are even worse than the games.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent, followed by Penumbra: Black Plague
also a big fan of Dead Space 1 but its as much action as horror.
System Shock 2.
Does the opposite of jump scares signaling to the player the enemies are in the vicinity.
Resident Evil 7, Eternal Darkness, Silent Hill 2,and 3, Dead Space, Alien Isolation, F.E.A.R Outlast, and Condemned. I love horror games lol.
Lots of people mentioning games that don't strike me as horror in the slightest. Resident Evil 7 is as close as it gets for me and that's not particularly scary either. I don't think horror transfers well to videogames.
Speaking strictly about HORROR and barely to no action (so RE4 is out by default) then P.T. was the only thing that truely made me uncomfortable... scariest sh*t in gaming
But if I have to choose a proper game then Silent Hill 3, I guess. SH2 was superior in story but SH3 had the most oppressive environment and monster designs in the series.
Played SOMA recently and had a blast. A thought provoking game that managed to tell a proper sci-fi horror story. Way better than the boring Amnesia
