Whats so good about Half-Life 2?

i got orange box on PC and started playing Half Life 2. I dont find the gameplay that interesting or unique, its just an ordinary shooter.

So what do people like about it?

I started, got my first weapon pistol and its boring now.

have you played half life 1? if not go bak and play it then come back to half life 2 or you will be lost!

but ye once you get past the crappy beginning areas you will see why it is so great

Another thing, the vehicles are so crappy and buggy. Hate the controls of the vehicles

The pacing is superior. The game varies from pure action to having to solve puzzles to horror to intense "boss" fights. The atmosphere is amazing thanks to visuals and sounds. It's extremely polished in every area(voice acting, graphics, controls etc.). The characters are likeable. The gameworld is superb. The difficulty is just right, you never get stuck or become frustrated but always have a sense of achievement and progression.

The 1st one was a lot better tho for its time, and I doubt that I would had liked HL2 as much as I did if I hadn't played HL1 back in the day.

what components make a game:

gameplay: HL2 is a great FPS, with great gameplay and the grav gun was a great innovation and worked perfectly .. if used by lesser devs, it would have been a gimmick, but in HL2 it was truly an amazing weapon

graphics: the game looked great when it came out, and IMO it still looks very respectable

story / presentation: IMO the half-life games don't have the greatest of stories (pretty cliché actually), but the way in which the story is told is different to most games .. we never leave Gordon Freeman's POV, and this really makes the game special .. the atmosphere in the game is really good too

level design: again great, and varied ..the first level, city 17, is awesome and the levels that follow are great too, and each has a different feel so it never gets stale .. i won't go into detail to avoid spoiling them

audio: was there any music? can't remember, but from what i do remember, above average sound .. weapons sound right, plenty of surrounding noise / talk etc

basically it has all the ingredients to make a great game, and it all comes together really well

its hard for me to imagine how you didnt find the opening sequence amazing, from the moment you step off the train and you realise your in a big brother compound, to the little scripted moments like when the gaurds chase you up those flight of stairs.

yes the gameplay is nothing particularly special (sparing the physics), but everything else - top quality.

Everything from Atmosphere, level design, voice acting, ambient music, graphics (still hold up for the source engine), characters, story, and pacing.

It's a case of "More than the sum of it's parts."

The fact that a thread like this is being created, about a game that originally came out 4 years ago, is saying enough I think. NielsNL

The original is better. The original is better than Halo, Metriod Prime and Crysis.

Halflife 2 feels like a completely different game. I think however, Halflife 2: Episode 2 was very good, much better than the others.

I played part of it at friends house which turned out to be the boat part, the horrible part. I bought it for TF2 and Portal and i got it for $15 :D. So i just thought i'd give half-life a try thinking the boat part would only be the bad part but guess not.

Actually I though that part was amazing. If you actually take your time on the boat part,you can really become immersed in the world.

There's one part where if you stop and get out,you can go down an alleyway and you find an old bycicle next to a headcrab launcher. Then a zombie comes out form the water. It really got me.

Not to mention the red barn. I thought the barn was extremely atmospheric.

I love the game its just that it freaks me out. Blasted zombies and antlions. I wasnt expecting the game to be part horror. O well I love that and episode 1, and so far Episode 2 is better than them both.

Actually the buggy part is the most atmospheric,immersive part of the game.

The part where you get out and walk along the bottom of the bridge,that part is amazing. One of my favorite video game moments. Everything about it is perfect.

I guess the game isn't your cup of tea though.

everyones saying the boat levels the worst but i thought ravenholm was.mayforcebeyou

Everyone said Ravenholm was scary but i blew through that level so quick i dident even notice...one of the most non-challanging parts of the whole game IMO...

but i did hate the boat levels...going in and out of them was a Fing hassle...

Uh because you are at the very start of the game, far from being even a quater into it.

Its simply the best recent singleplayer first person shooter. Still.

Not every FPS is uninspiring. I think that's a pretty dumb thing to say. Look at:

1) Clear Sky

2) Crysis Warhead

3) Far Cry 2

4) Left 4 Dead

Those are the 4 big FPS's coming out this year. Are they uninspiring?

Although I do agree that HL2 is still unmatched. For it's time,I though the first game was better,but nowadays it's hard to appreciate that game.

Maybe you should of bought it nearly 5 years ago when it was REALLY impressive...your calling a 5 year old game bad by current standards? What world do you live in? Yea compared to whats out now its nothing special but back then it was pretty much the best thing you could get.
