What is the most $$$ you'd be willing to spend on a console?

For me, going by my personal history, $400 seems to be the soft cap, with perhaps ~$450 being the hard cap. I just can't justify spending more than $500 on a console. Can't do it. For example, when the PS3 was announced I was hyped through the ceiling; when the price was announced, I came back down to the floor; when it released, I did not buy it. I stuck with my PS2 and waited for years for the price to come down before picking up a PS3.

What about you guys? Oh, and if you try and turn this into a Scorpio thread I am going to reach through your monitor and give you a kiss of death. Just letting you know.

$500 has always been my max. Hence why I went with the 20GB PS3 at launch. No regrets.

I used to not really care. I'm one of these dudes who bought a PS3 at launch lol. I used to get so much value from a console that the price just wasn't a factor.

I'll be looking at things a lot differently now though. Unless there are some really dope exclusives in the launch window I won't be an early adopter anymore. Doubt I'll be spending more than $300 on a console going forward. For a box that I might use a couple of times a year it's just not worth it.

There was a time when I'd say 600. But with the small amount of gaming time I've had lately, and the fact that consoles have fewer and fewer games that I can't play on my desktop... their value to me is plummeting.

Well I too paid top dollars for PS3 at launch and it was well worth's money spend at the time and the hardware had many features I like cause I didn't have a gaming PC at the time.

The war on exclusives can make one feel this way. We need to go back to the 5th-6th gen mentality. Exclusives are important for a console.

I bought the PS3 at $599 at launch but it was mostly because it was the cheapest bluray player and at the time I was desperate for HD content to play on my TV. I can't see myself doing that ever again though, it's either $399 or GTFO from here on out.

Any amount if it were cool/powerful enough and I could have full access to the hardware (install 3rd party OS/Linux/Windows) :p

What's the most I would pay for a traditional console? I dunno it depends on the games. Maybe $400. The sole reason I would ever buy a console would be for the exclusives (a practice I dislike... but I also like good games).

If I want to buy something I buy it. I think that's the same with other people. I mean some people bought the PSVR and then PS4 Pro with no problems, hell even bought the PS3 during launch and other people just shook their hands at them. It's just people will buy whatever they want at whatever price. Gaming is an expensive hobby. If price will be an issue then I think you're better off finding and focusing on another hobby. I'm just glad at least One console let the games you invest in and collect through the years follow you to the next gen consoles.

I paid $600 for a PS3 right after launch, my biggest gripe about doing that is I bought it at the time for the full BC. But Sony bitched out and pulled BC to save a penny. They wouldn't even repair phats with a guarantee of return, they might have swapped it with a repaired non BC console instead. It wasn't the PS2 hardware that drove up price it was the Blu-ray and Cell which I didn't care for to be honest. The Cell itself really caused problems with development in early years, developers were having a hard time trying to figure out how to work around it, it took more time and money and resources. Probably why projects like Lair and Haze killed the companies that worked on them, companies once revered for their previous games. Anyhow, Japanese developers aren't built like western AAA developers and often have considerably less resources for costly development, I feel this might have been a large driving force with the Japanese shift toward handhelds. Other parts include Nintendo's Wii, which didn't offer any much in way of third party support, and the Xbox 360, which Japan doesn't give a shit about. And since the PS3 was so alienating to Japanese developers, that's why I think we saw a shift to handhelds thrive last gen in Japan. Anyhow, I was a bit disappointed in the PS3 largely because with the PS2 I had many expectations of Sony continuing things as usual both in terms of their 1st and 3rd party titles, and I feel that the console didn't live up to my expectations in many areas. I was fine playing my PS2 games on my PS3 which was kind of essential once I upgraded to an HDTV as PS2s were never built for that (they look like ass on an HDTV). But eventually fears that it might kick worried me, fears that the upside down CPU pasted on with some crusty untested environmentally friendly thermal paste that dries up, cracks, and fails, fears that it would die if I played it too much worried and I just stopped playing it. Eventually though they did bring out a nice BC library through emulation, so my fears were somewhat lifted as I know I can always just buy a new better PS3 and re-acquire most of my favorites digitally.

Seeing as my PS4 has been sitting idle since last January, I'll be spending a total of nada on future consoles for myself. The only thing that may get a purchase over the next few years is a Nintendo Switch and that will be entirely down to my kids wanting one.

I would be willing to spend 300$ hopefully the switch isn't more than that.

I get a kick out of people saying, "so you bought a launch PS3 then?" because someone will go $600 NOW. That was 10 years ago, HD was 720p and many games on PS3 didn't hit that early on. Things change in a decade
