Overall western, I find that they do tend to try more and different things. There is one issue here however (AAA industry only).
The western games I like and love, are being killed off for more mass market friendly versions, meaning that for every year that passes I tend to get more alienated, obnoxious main characters, gameplay as flat as a piece of paper (yeah you still call it streamlining?). And too focused on cultural movements rather then artistic vision(also see: focus group development (most likely a case of most games not having one lead with a clear vision more then anything else)).
So the western games do feel like they are losing the majority of their gameplay, a lot of potential identity and character, and more often then not feels like convayer belt productions and not a creative drive.
I always did have a love for Japanese games as well, and while they were seen stagnent through most of last gen, they generally did tend to stick with what made them unique, series had and held their personality, while the new and unique games trickled through at a decent pace. In the bigger sense, it seems that the Japanese Devs and Publishers, overall remembered what they were making and why, fostering a sense of identity to characters, games and series.
So while I in general prefer Western games, it is fading fast, fascinating worlds, and awesome gameplay swapped for militery shooter (now in a slight sci-fi setting) nr. 88 bland boring assassin nr. 32 and uninspired gameplay loop collection nr. 44 Nothing surprising, nothing thrilling, nothing impressive (and before you claim "nostalgia" it is worth noting that games like Satellite Reign, Original Sin, and many other AA games Still does bring that feeling of love, care, direction and vision to the table).
If it continues I will likely end up preferring Japanese games more on a whole, not that it matters to me where they are made.
