Poll Western or Japanese games - which do you like more? (77 votes)

Western 58%
Japanese 42%

I would have to go with Japanese games. My favorite games are games like Metal Gear Solid, Bayonetta, Bloodborne, Mario, Final Fantasy, Ni No Kuni. These games are more artistically pleasing to me. But don't get me wrong though, I don't think Western fall short at all. I just give Japanese games a slight edge. What about you, SW?

I get turned off by the character art style in a lot of Japanese games, but I wouldn't say I like western made games more overall.

Right now? Western games just excel in quality, genre diversity and quantity. Dont forget most of the great indie games are Western games, many of have a strong focus on gameplay, balance/challenge and encounter design that Japanese games traditionally had a step up on over the west.

I can count in one had the relevant Japanese developers that are still good, two that barely offer what I have traditionally liked about Japanese games but great in their own distinct way. There's just far more great western developers out there right now that have been consistently putting out great games.

Japanese games were superior in the 80s and 90s, but in the 2000s, I've enjoyed western games much more. Nintendo is an exception as they are still my favorite developer, but besides the games that Nintendo produces, it is rare for me to enjoy a game by any other Japanese company these days.

Western by far. JRPGs tend to involve way too much grinding that kills the pace of the game. I'm playing FFX right now and every two steps I get dragged into another random battle. Super annoying

Western. I have nothing against Japanese games, a lot of my all time favourites are Japanese titles, like Fire Emblem: Awakening, Final Fantasy IV, the Pokemon games, Zelda, Metroid, Persona and so many others. I just like the Western style of games more.

If I were to list out my all time favorite games, most of them would be Japanese.

Though these days, it's about an even split for me. So many Japanese devs fell off while a lot of western devs have been bringing cool stuff to the table. Still, when Japanese devs are at their best, I still they're making the most well designed gameplay systems. Those games are few and far between though.

I love both. They both offer a different flavor of games. But if I have to vote on this stupid topic, then I my vote goes to Western game development, based on the experiences I've played since last gen. Western development seemed to push more boundaries as a whole, and Japan as a whole has been really slacking IMO. Maybe this gen that may change.

Again, Opinions.

Western.

It's rare that I play any Japanese game now. They're just too far behind the curve gameplay-wise and have a bit too much fanservice in them. Last one I played and enjoyed was BB. But I'm probably not going to buy DS3. I bought Disgaea 4 on the PS3 and I couldn't even finish it.

Exactly, that's how I feel too. That's why I answered this based on development boundaries being pushed; and the west, as a whole, has definitely overtaken Japan, as a whole, on that front. But things can change. and I welcome it.

5 years ago I would have said Western games period. Now I would say Japanese.

Western games have deviated from what I'm looking for in games, and my tastes have changed. I love games with skill based boss fights. The Japanese rule this trope with games like Dark Souls, Ys: Origins, Bayonetta, or Metal Gear Rising.

Another thing I like is games with extremely tight controls. The above are good examples, but Nintendo games are the best example. Tropical Freeze or 3D World are both tight experience that greatly benefit from their controls. Then you have the great simplistic, yet complex enough to stay interesting, controls in their turn based games like any Fire Emblem or Mario RPG.

Finally I really enjoy games that tell a good story. Visual novels like Steins; Gate, Kara no Shojou, Clannad or Fate/Stay Night drop all of the gameplay parts that often bring your usual story based RPG down and give me exactly what I want.

Yeah, I hope so bro... yo.

I'm glad the west has come so far, but I would love to see Japan bounce back in full force. If only their youth could rotate back to console gaming. But who knows, maybe we'll see a resurgence as Japanese developers continue to see success on PC.

I prefer Western Games.

However, I do enjoy Japanese games if they fall into the ACTION, ADVENTURE, SHMUP genres.

I don't like JRPGs.

I like good games, from wherever, but a lot of my all time favorites happen to be Japanese, and if I'm talking my current fav devs, most of them are Japanese: Platinum Games, From Software, *sigh* Nintendo, etc.

The west, especially in the triple A department has a tendency to focus on visuals and story, as opposed to actually making a well playing game. That said, I'm not a big jrpg person, in fact I think routinely that genre puts out a lot of trash.

When I was younger I leaned more towards Japanese games, but the older I get, western games become more relatable.

There are some great western games out there no doubt. However, Japanese games leave the biggest impression on me throuout the years and I've had more fun game moments with japanese games than with western ones.

In 2016 the most hype from the games announced of lopsided in favor of the japanese titles that are coming out.

Japan is an easy win if I had to make a choice. good thing I don't have to make a choice with PS4 having the best of both right at my finger tips.

Western games are almost always better. My favorite series is MGS, but besides that I always prefer western games. Fallout, Deus Ex, The Elder Scrolls, Bioshock, and Dishonored are all significantly better than any Japanese games IMO.

I admit that too, but after I played Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata, that feeling went away. The games stories and combat strategies took over.
