Generally, it makes more sense to upgrade your TV first but it seem these 4K machines do see benefit with non-4K adopters. Pro with enhanced visual/performance modes and Scorpio with 100% 360 BC. Seeing is the Xbone S see slight performance boost we should be able to assume that Scorpio will do that too in a much higher scale.

Million dollar question those still living in full-1080p.

Which will you upgrade first, a 4K console or 4K TV?

TV for me since the 4K consoles are way too new and one isn't even out yet. Got me my 55KS8000 display but waiting on a good deal on Pro and inevitably the Scorpio or course.

@MonsieurX: I partially agree. However you'll eventually have to get one or the other first... unless you get both simultaneously which is shop binging at that point.

PC for me. In fact I just upgraded my mouse.

Next upgrade will be a new graphics card.

Don't see the point in owning a 4K TV yet. And don't see the point in a 4K console when they get 20FPS in some games.

A new CPU or GPU

A PS4 pro at some point (I'd get an extra controller with this too).

I need a better monitor, but not immediately.

Console first and TV later. 4K will be great, but performance is largely going to be shit. Sad that Pro scales down when playing PS4 games.

Yup.

All this stuff is relatively new. The consoles don't do 4K at 60 frames, HDR is only on really big TVs, PC do 4K at a high cost.

Hell the only thing worth getting 4k for is 4K Blu Rays....but who wants to buy disc movies all over again. We do this shit every few years and it's gotten old.

I like my new 4K HDR TV, don't get me wrong, but it's not what I wanted. I don't get true HDR but like I said the only TVs that do that are 55 inches and up.

I'm really pushing it at 40...and I got a 43.

Console first, TV after. I like to have my console ready so that when I buy the TV, I can test the TV to make sure it works well with my console, if not I return the TV.

Buying a new TV is an an activity that I dont enjoy at all. It takes a lot of my time, first to do research on which model I want. Then buying it and installing it home and making sure there are no dead pixels. While I've settled for 1 dead pixel max on 1080P TV(depending where it is, if in the corner of screen I dont mind) in the past, I'll accept Zero dead pixels on my upcoming 4K TV.

It's difficult to choose a TV nowadays, but a new 4K TV with all the newest tech is a nice upgrade even if you are just running a regular PS4 on it. If you use a PC on your TV, I can definitely recommend a 4K TV. Even if you can't run games in 4K, the desktop looks really nice, and movies do look better upscaled.

i say TV.

1080p upscaled to 4k looks better than regular 1080p. also you get hdr. even regular ps4s/xbox1 S support hdr.

If the PS4 pro and NiOh is any indication, there won't be improvements only for 4k TV owners. If devs follow Tecmo/Team Ninja, there will be performance boosts on newer games running on the updated consoles.

The fact that you need to spend roughly 1500 bucks for a fake 4k console experience is a joke. If there was proof that you need to build or buy a gaming pc this is it.

Makes no sense to have a 4k console without a 4k tv. Yeah you get some benefits with just a 1080p tv but to get the full experience you don't have a 4k tv.

PS4 Pro does not do 4K, it's just a dumb marketing lie. Here's Tomb Raider PS4 Pro "4K" vs PC real 4K (click on image with middle mouse button to get original 1920x1080 image):

My choice is the Might Scorpio doing phenom graphic fidelity at 1080P or better at 60 fps or better.

Then get a 4K TV afterwards just in case it really can do 4K gaming justice. . :P

Well then, I don't see a reason why you would need a 4K console cause it's a waste of money in my opinion.

The question is predicated that the buyer in mind already has an X1 or PS4? If so, get the TV since you already have the base models of the consoles.

However, if the scenario is based upon the buyer not having an X1 or PS4....then get a PS Pro or Scorpio first.

Oh, I see. Kingdom Hearts in 4K isn't something I would consider playing but however, like everyone stated, you need both 4K console (PS4 Pro) and 4KTV at the same time. BTW, both Sony & Amazon are doing this combo deal on PS4 Pro+4KTV combo for $1,000 and I gotta admit, it looks like a good deal to me but I'd figure I better posted that link to you if that's something what ya looking for.

I bought a PS4 pro because it offers upgrades for my 1080p set now. 4k TVs are way to pricey for good hdr and response times atm for me. But I'm set when I do upgrade.

Haven't been able to see it with my own TV as I don't own the new Xbone S model or PS4 but I've seen them up close before and it is beyond breath taking. That's the only reason I decided to adopt 4K early. =P

That said, unlike resolution, all HDR aren't created equal. You have to spend a little to truly enjoy it. The KS8000 of Samsung is really just the entry level for true HDR gaming. It's stupidly ridiculous that some people are overlooking it with 4K all that is on their mind..

@Legend002: I've seen it close by as my friend just bought the KS8000 recently and the HDR is clearly superior to my JS8500, which is the last years model, at least this was the case on Ratchet and Clank and the JS8500 does even support hdr10 but still the KS8000 comes out superior. Think the KS8000 tops the field with HDR enabled gaming with input latency, it also features 4k 60hz 4:4:4 which makes it great for pc gaming

@howmakewood: I was just looking that up about it supporting HDR10 and it certainly does. They improved the quality naturally I guess. Ratchet will be the first game I'll test my TV with. Can't wait for BF where I can get it for $15!

I was going to get a 4k monitor, but I changed my mind since the old Titan X I have is coming close to that ultra 1080p 60 fps mark. In BF1, I usually get 90 or so fps, but it can drop down to 70 and what not. Too close for comfort.

I'm getting an ultra wide monitor, and then I'm going to upgrade the video card and cpu next year.

Agreed. If anything I'd get a larger 1080p set and wait for 4k sets w/ HDR to come down in price.

I'll buy a 4K console when one exists. If I owned a PS4 Pro, I would never use the 4K option in games when it comes with a hit to FPS.

But on my PC, I could have gone for 4K, but I opted for Ultrawide instead, and it made so much more of a difference. I wish that was an option for consoles. It makes the game experience so much better.
