i just dont understand how, in this world of unparalleled technology (yes i know console processors are parallel), a Turn based rpg can be so wildly popular (FF)

i always thought that rpgs were turn based because complex combat couldnt be done on old systems.  but now that we have amazing processors and graphics, why do we still have turn based games???

now dont get me wrong, i play a mean rpg, (wrpg: xmen, marvel, fable) but arent video games supposed to be exciting??  i thought so.  so flame me if you want, but i think developers are doing uss a disservice making these games.

BTW, rpg is role playing game, right?  how the hell am i playing a role by selecting an attack through a menu and watching a pre rendered animation of my character attacking an equally pre rendered foe???

Sidescrollers should stop being made... IMO turned based RPGs offer less chaos and thus move involved and deep fighting systems... But above all they just offer an experience that other games can't and some people favor that experience...

...uh... you do realize that sometimes turn-based games can allow for much better strategy and planning, and deeper combat, especially if you are controlling a bunch of characters. That's why, though I enjoy RTS games and real-time RPG's, I'll always also enjoy TBS games and turn-based RPG's.

Some people enjoy watching movies, but would like their own control over what's happening on-screen. I can't tell if you're simply ignorant, or you're actually confused. :?

No its about building up that character and having a sense of acomplishment when you get to level whatever and are able to kill those things that were once hard to kill. Turn based is just a diffrent kind of RPG than action adventure and can be just as fun if done right.

Its more about using the right skills at the right time, where as in an action rpg I can just keep swinging my sword and dodging which is more realistic but isnt very big on exersising your stategic part of your brain.

I like turn based RPGs, and you can also make the argument that almost every other genre hasn't really changed. Has the FPS genre really changed since DOOM? (besides the evolution of online play) and also, there are alot of RPGs that aren't turn based, that have been made since PS1.

Like superfly1 said, "Exactly. If you can't understand it, then don't bash it. " We all don't understand why people like certian things but we cannot deny them their freedom of choice and likes/dislikes. I don't get why people like Madden and such games so much, they seems quite unexciting. But if you ask someone who enjoy that genre, it be something like this "Wow I can't believe that, I zoomed right and left, then right and barely made it and scored the last winning point. That was awesome!" In terms of that, think this, we all get excited differently from chess to high action games. Turn based is more like "What should I do next, do I want to do this or don't I? Should I take a change at casting this spell that could miss or hit, or should I continue using my normal attcking. Damn so close, his HP is almost gone. This is crazy exciting.." So different ways to be exciting, either bloodpumping in your face action or tactical mentality action.

Turn based is a battle system, what does that have to do with PLAYING A  ROLE. ROLE PLAYING, I mean, if you wanna be really technical, all games with characters you play on RPG.

There is a fundamental difference between JRPG and WRPG.

JRPG is reading a book

WRPG is writing a book

Japan has much myth and legend in its society, many stories passed through millenia. North America and Europe...not so much, we make up our own stories, like the Bible (cheap shot). You know many JRPG have the basis of Japanese myth and legend, they are just variations and changed versions, twisted.

Its kind of like our movies and theatre, its all Shakespearean.

Where else will I get my stories about efeminante male leads going to save a girl that was kidnapped, or about a world about to be destroyed and they find out that their life was a lie? :( In all honesty, I like JRPG stories.

NO. I'm actually enjoying Enchanted Arms. The stories OK, but the combat is superb. With the 6 classes, fire, water, earth, wind, light and dark, there is a lot of strategy that would be lost in real time.

normally real time RPGs are too easy, have clunky controls, limited moves and hack and slash battles.

I agree also.

I will say this though, after FFX, I grew tired of turn-based combat. It just got boring for me. I still haven't played FFXII yet, so I'm hoping to play that soon, along with other real-time games like .hack Rebirth or Tales of the Abyss.

This post touches on most of what I'd say:

[QUOTE="Mad_Scientist"]...uh... you do realize that sometimes turn-based games can allow for much better strategy and planning, and deeper combat, especially if you are controlling a bunch of characters. That's why, though I enjoy RTS games and real-time RPG's, I'll always also enjoy TBS games and turn-based RPG's.

Adding to that, in a role-playing game you are playing a role, but it is a role that is not your own in the real world. As such, differentiating player reflexes from the character's removes limitations on the character. Hence, turn-based combat is a very valid choice for a role-playing game.

I only equate RPGs with that "old outdated" turn-based system.  Those "rpgs" you mentioned  are action/adventure games with RPG elements.  FF12 was crap in my opinion because it went too far from the battle system that made the FF series great to begin with.  There is such a thing a "strategy" that an RPG is supposed to offer.

First of all, if anyone thinks that JRPG battle systems are 'deep', kill yourself. Baldur's Gate was far superior, and that's an old game now.

What defines an RPG is the ability to play through a campaign WITH the ability to make your own choices, changing the outcome of the story. JRPG's are not RPG's.

I agree with you that Baldur's Gate was one of the best RPGs ever made along with KOTOR, but to say that JRPG's aren't deep and shouldn't be considered RPG's at all is a pretty narrow-minded view.

Nyder99
It is ignorant to make that generalization about all JRPGs. Baldur's Gate's combat was laughable, get over it. Real-time with pause is not a good way to represent a rule set built on turns.

Side Scrollers rule. Also, TBS should be more inventive from time to time. Real-time is usually a lot more fun, look at Star Ocean 2.

If you actually understood what turn-based meant you would understand that turn-based RPGs by and large HAVE stopped being made. While you're at it you should widen your horizons and realize turn-based doesn't = bad. Also I would debate whether Marvel and Xmen should be considered RPGs, I don't believe superhero games are a seperate genre. The fact of the matter is turn-based RPGs are for the strategic and calculating mind, like the Puzzle, RTS, and TBS genres. Ultimately all your arguments are those which have been used tons of times and debunked not only by gamers and developers, but also by the English language.

That was a stupid read. Just because you arent intelligent enough to enjoy a turn based game doesnt make them obsolete.

i just dont understand how, in this world of unparalleled technology (yes i know console processors are parallel), a Turn based rpg can be so wildly popular (FF)

i always thought that rpgs were turn based because complex combat couldnt be done on old systems.  but now that we have amazing processors and graphics, why do we still have turn based games???

now dont get me wrong, i play a mean rpg, (wrpg: xmen, marvel, fable) but arent video games supposed to be exciting??  i thought so.  so flame me if you want, but i think developers are doing uss a disservice making these games.

BTW, rpg is role playing game, right?  how the hell am i playing a role by selecting an attack through a menu and watching a pre rendered animation of my character attacking an equally pre rendered foe???

this can be asked about any genre by anyone but its your opinion so imma not gonna flame you. But its not a disservice. Maybe people do love turned base like i do.

[QUOTE="ArisShadows"]Because people like diffrent things. I play D&D, no images, turn-based and I love it.darrowby88
but i dont get why. its like watching a movie instead of playing a game

Because some people care for deeper combat systems than the modified hack and slashers that are typical of the WRPG genre? BTW, if you were talking about D&D its the basis of all western RPGs so show some respect if you preferr that kind. [QUOTE="RKFS"] I don't get why people like FPSes so much so they should stop being made... I don't like country music so it should stop being made... I don't like people so they should stop being made...

Hate to play devil's advocate in this thread, but country music should stop being made..its watered down pop-rock that coincidentally becomes more popular when the economy is down. Country music is mopey, debatably unmusical, garbage that has taken over the territory that belongs to the REAL country music..which is of course folkmusic and bluegrass. [QUOTE="Grodus5"] And I think FPS's should stop being made! I mean, really! Someone could have a heart attack with all that action! (note the sarcasm) Just because you hate JRPG, I love them. Fire Emblem owns!

Technically Fire Emblem fits into a sub-genre called SRPG (strategy) or TRPG (tactical). For the record, I enjoy that genre tons as well..though not as much as some turn-based JRPGs. [QUOTE="Vandalvideo"] You enjoy Enchated Arms? Thats the most cliche JRPG I had ever played. Go play Suikoden.

I played Suikoden III and don't much care for the combat system, I prefer Grandia and Shadow Hearts.

I will say this though, after FFX, I grew tired of turn-based combat. It just got boring for me.

Blue-Sphere
Lets be fair...FFX was pretty much the most generic turn-based battle system in a high-profile JRPG in probably a decade.
I hate all turn based RPG EXCEPT Lunar, Chrono Trigger and Legend of Dragoon because the combat system is differentTimesplitter14
Try the Suikoden, Grandia, and Shadow Hearts series..they are different as well. Also I found both Grandia and Shadow Hearts to be quite good (many people like Suikoden too..just not me).

I think turn based RPG are the best, and I'm not a fan of FF.
