i just dont understand how, in this world of unparalleled technology (yes i know console processors are parallel), a Turn based rpg can be so wildly popular (FF)Because people like diffrent things. I play D&D, no images, turn-based and I love it.
i always thought that rpgs were turn based because complex combat couldnt be done on old systems. but now that we have amazing processors and graphics, why do we still have turn based games???
now dont get me wrong, i play a mean rpg, (wrpg: xmen, marvel, fable) but arent video games supposed to be exciting?? i thought so. so flame me if you want, but i think developers are doing uss a disservice making these games.
BTW, rpg is role playing game, right? how the hell am i playing a role by selecting an attack through a menu and watching a pre rendered animation of my character attacking an equally pre rendered foe???

Like superfly1 said, "Exactly. If you can't understand it, then don't bash it. " We all don't understand why people like certian things but we cannot deny them their freedom of choice and likes/dislikes. I don't get why people like Madden and such games so much, they seems quite unexciting. But if you ask someone who enjoy that genre, it be something like this "Wow I can't believe that, I zoomed right and left, then right and barely made it and scored the last winning point. That was awesome!" In terms of that, think this, we all get excited differently from chess to high action games. Turn based is more like "What should I do next, do I want to do this or don't I? Should I take a change at casting this spell that could miss or hit, or should I continue using my normal attcking. Damn so close, his HP is almost gone. This is crazy exciting.." So different ways to be exciting, either bloodpumping in your face action or tactical mentality action.

Turn based is a battle system, what does that have to do with PLAYING A ROLE. ROLE PLAYING, I mean, if you wanna be really technical, all games with characters you play on RPG.
There is a fundamental difference between JRPG and WRPG.
JRPG is reading a book
WRPG is writing a book
Japan has much myth and legend in its society, many stories passed through millenia. North America and Europe...not so much, we make up our own stories, like the Bible (cheap shot). You know many JRPG have the basis of Japanese myth and legend, they are just variations and changed versions, twisted.
Its kind of like our movies and theatre, its all Shakespearean.

NO. I'm actually enjoying Enchanted Arms. The stories OK, but the combat is superb. With the 6 classes, fire, water, earth, wind, light and dark, there is a lot of strategy that would be lost in real time.
normally real time RPGs are too easy, have clunky controls, limited moves and hack and slash battles.

I will say this though, after FFX, I grew tired of turn-based combat. It just got boring for me. I still haven't played FFXII yet, so I'm hoping to play that soon, along with other real-time games like .hack Rebirth or Tales of the Abyss.

I'm still playing it. I'm only really bigging up the battles...and the characters are OK too. Sort of a cross between Pokemon and Final Fantasy :D

First of all, if anyone thinks that JRPG battle systems are 'deep', kill yourself. Baldur's Gate was far superior, and that's an old game now.
What defines an RPG is the ability to play through a campaign WITH the ability to make your own choices, changing the outcome of the story. JRPG's are not RPG's.
Nyder99
thank you for your opinion, here's mine: no keep making 'em they are fun. In stead stop making FPS they are monotone. raualex
First of all, if anyone thinks that JRPG battle systems are 'deep', kill yourself. Baldur's Gate was far superior, and that's an old game now.It is ignorant to make that generalization about all JRPGs. Baldur's Gate's combat was laughable, get over it. Real-time with pause is not a good way to represent a rule set built on turns.

[QUOTE="ArisShadows"]Because people like diffrent things. BTW, if you were talking about D&D its the basis of all western RPGs so show some respect if you preferr that kind. [QUOTE="RKFS"] I don't get why people like FPSes so much so they should stop being made... I don't like country music so it should stop being made... I don't like people so they should stop being made... Hate to play devil's advocate in this thread, but country music should stop being made..its watered down pop-rock that coincidentally becomes more popular when the economy is down. Country music is mopey, debatably unmusical, garbage that has taken over the territory that belongs to the REAL country music..which is of course folkmusic and bluegrass. [QUOTE="Grodus5"] And I think FPS's should stop being made! I mean, really! Someone could have a heart attack with all that action! (note the sarcasm) Just because you hate JRPG, I love them. Fire Emblem owns! Technically Fire Emblem fits into a sub-genre called SRPG (strategy) or TRPG (tactical). For the record, I enjoy that genre tons as well..though not as much as some turn-based JRPGs. [QUOTE="Vandalvideo"] You enjoy Enchated Arms? Thats the most cliche JRPG I had ever played. Go play Suikoden. I played Suikoden III and don't much care for the combat system, I prefer Grandia and Shadow Hearts.
Lets be fair...FFX was pretty much the most generic turn-based battle system in a high-profile JRPG in probably a decade.I will say this though, after FFX, I grew tired of turn-based combat. It just got boring for me.
Blue-Sphere
I hate all turn based RPG EXCEPT Lunar, Chrono Trigger and Legend of Dragoon because the combat system is differentTimesplitter14Try the Suikoden, Grandia, and Shadow Hearts series..they are different as well. Also I found both Grandia and Shadow Hearts to be quite good (many people like Suikoden too..just not me).
