1. Banjo-Kazooie (first 3D game that made me say 'wow', great characters, great level design, great music and very funny at times)
2. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (better atmosphere and artstyl.e then OoT, time cycle is interesting, great music and characters).
3. Final Fantasy IX (amazing story and well executed, great music and characters, probally the game that I have the best memories with seeing as RPG's are my favorite genre).

Fallout 1 & 2- The setting, the story, the game

Planescape Torment:Probably the best RPG story I've ever played.

GTA 3- the first fully realized virtual city to drive around in. It was everything I wanted in that type of game. And still some of the funniest parody commercials in a game.

Not really the top 3, but those 3 games are able to hold their own against any other games that I have played.

Half-Life --- Amazing FPS, great storytelling, excellent scripted sequences etc.
Command and Conquer --- FMV, great story and factions, brilliant villain character (Kane), well provided you're GDI.
Half-Life 2 --- An amazing, cinematic experience, fantastic characters, a great enemy (Universal Union), great setting. Follow up to the brilliant Half-Life.

1. System Shock 2

It was a game that scared me and immersed me in the experience unlike any before it.

2. Deus Ex

Another game that immersed me in the experience and made me feel like part of the world.

3. Eternal Darkness

A game that had a lot of mystery and left me questioning a lot of things until the very end.

3: System Shock 2 Many years ago, presumably 1999, I swiped this off of a software shelf going on nothing other than a small mention in a magazine, and ended up getting an excellent survival horror FPS with some RPG elements thrown in for good measure! Best impulse purchase ever, or what? 2: Deus Ex It could have been a better FPS. It could have been a better RPG. However, no other game has melded the two genres together as well as the original Deus Ex has. Its only major flaw in my eyes is that the AI is dumber than a brick and takes much longer than you'd expect to react to your presence. 1: Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters I wasn't exposed to this game until downloading and installing UQM 0.4.0, and am I kicking myself for it! (The original DOS version was released in 1992. Then again, it was the 3DO remake a few years later that had the voiceovers...) Great gameplay, excellent music, well-written humor, and most of all, an adversary that I almost felt pity for after all they had been through. Almost.

1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Reason: 2D gaming and Castlevania in its true prime, it carries a lot of heart and soul, and it also showed that 2D games were still alive on 3D platforms.

2. Doom

For its time it was the most action packed, immersive, and most atmospheric game ever. It also introduced fun with a chainsaw!

3. Final Fantasy 6

The series in its true prime. It featured a wonderful and diverse cast of characters, outstanding story, and Kefka, one of the greatest villians ever.

These were the games that I thought of on the top of my head. If I actually thought then it would've been different.

1. Super Mario Galaxy

Great graphics, sound, gameplay; really imaginative levels, puzzles, etc.; immersive worlds (or galaxies, in this case ;) ); great replay value

2. Paper Mario

Witty dialog; near-perfect battle formula; unique visual styIe; pretty long

3. Super Smash Bros Melee (soon to be replaced by Brawl)

I got it a month after it came out (2001), and still play it regularly/host tournaments today; great cast of fighters; infinite replay value; huge soundtrack; lots of levels; lots of options

Half Life: Ahead of its time, some of the sequences are just breathtaking, "We've Got Hostiles," "Surface Tension." Plus, with mods considered, Half Life has the most value of any game in my mind.

StarCraft: Gold standard of RTS for better half of a decade, and still going strong. It took games as recent as DoW and CoH to take that title away from StarCraft, a game made in 1998.

Baldur's Gate 2: Defined the word epic for me, so well presented and written, full of life and memorable characters.

1. Super mario 64

revolutionized the platformer and created 3d platforming

2. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire: The best star wars game I've ever played, great gameplay

3. Shadow of the Colosus: a simple concept that offered some of the most fun I had last gen

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Soul Calibur 2: perfectly tuned fighter that game me hours of fun with fiends.

Halo 3: The halo that motivated me to come back to the series.

There are waaaaay too many games that I have played and have not made it to this list.

1. absolutely agree on Deus Ex 1. it does so much and, most importantly, so much very well. there are some games that might have a superior element to DE1 (HL2 is a better shooter for example) but as an overall package and an overall experience, DE1 is without equal. simply the finest game ever made in the history of gaming. with the way things are going, it also looks like it will be the best game ever made for the forseeable future also. god i must go back and play it again.

2. i actually prefer the origonal. on paper BG2 should have been better but BG1 just had this....umph....this something that, to be honest, bioware and blackisle (RIP) never managed to replicate again. for me that puts it just ahead of BG2. BG2 is still a crackin game though. i rate planescape higher than both mind.

my top 3 would be

1) DE1 (as close to perfection as gaming has gotten)

2) Rome total war: epic. epic on every scale. mind numbingly epic. did i mention it was epic? jsut in case theres any doubt...epicness right there. it is the strategy god.

3) Metroind Prime. before this i had never heard of metroid. i never played it as a child (sadly) and i thought samus was a guy when i started playing it. so before playing this i had no idea what to expect. so make no mistake that when i say this is nintendos second OOT and one of their greatest accomplishments EVER....im not kidding. remove the metroid licence and lore and u still have one of the most tightly knit and expertly created games in this industries history. it is magnificent from start too finish and an absolute pleasure to play. its just a dam shame nintendo didnt support the game properly in temrs of building up hype...this could have been the GCs halo.......the game that single handedly sold a million GCs.

1) Deus Ex: truly amazing story, best RPG-Shooter hybrid I've ever seen, and just the right amount of pwnage.

2) Total Annihilation: one of the deepest and biggest RTSs ever, as well as the most strategic one I've ever played. Then, there's the nukes.

3) Metroid Prime: best first-person action-platformer ever. And epic bosses. Can't forget the epic bosses.

Not in any order:

1. Mike Tyson's Punch Out, man, great game. Loved that soundtrack great characters, I really felt for that little guy haha.

2.Tecmo Bowl, I'm like 2-103 all time vs. my older brother back en el dia, but the best football game ever, Madden could take some hints

*Sarcastic*.

3. Super Mario 1, simply, battle mode.

These are the games that got me hooked on playing videogames since like I was 5. I don't play videogames as much now (havn't touched my 360, PC, or Wii in a couple months now), but I'm glad the gaming industry is still making some cool stuff. Shout out to Age of Empires 2, Red Alert 2, just watching those epic final fantasy's (VII, IX, X), Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, SSX Tricky and 3, The Bouncer (special place), Timesplitters 2 and future perfect, and most recently Super Mario Galaxy.

Wow, I love deus ex. Didn't realize there were so many fans of it out there.

It's too difficult for me to pick 3 games, but I also saw someone say Star Control II. I've been playing through it the last month and a half or so and I can honestly say i've never been as impressed by the scope of a classic pc game. The moment you look at the star map and realize that there are thousands of planets to visit, you just have to wonder why everyone doesn't play this game.

2. FFVII - best RPG ever made

3. RE4 - Plain fantastic from start to finish

Honorable Mentions: Super Mario Bros, Mario 64, TLoZ LttP, KotOR, Doom, MoH Allied Assault, EQ (for what it did for MMorpgs), WoW (even though I never played it I recognize greatness), Chrono Trigger, FFII, Gran Turismo, CS Source, Socom II, and the one game worthy of this list from this gen Bioshock.

StarCraft: Brood War The most balanced RTS to ever grace gaming.

Gears of War: An intense game that plays completely different than the rest of online shooters today and the single most fun campaign in a shooter ever.

Ninja Gaiden Black: The game that will make you bleed but is still fair about it. The only real problem with this masterpiece is the fact that I now hate all other Action Adventure games.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Amazing graphics, amazing gameplay, amazing design, amazing puzzles, amazing music. Everything about the game is awesome.

2. Chrono Trigger. The best RPG ever in my opinion. Just like OoT it's just a big chunk of awesomeness. It even had multiple endings. Plus the music in Chrono Trigger is the best game music, ever.

3. Super Mario Bros. 3. Again, simply awesome. Great gameplay, lots of variation and great music.

1: Half-Life. Everyones played HL2,but the first game is extremely underappreciated. The fact that it didnt win GOTY here is a crime and it should be punishable by law. Its an amazing game and still enjoyable today.

Super Mario World: 96 levels of pure fun and the interdiction of Yoshi just made it even more fun.

Metal Gear Solid: A great stealth game with interesting gameplay and storyline.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert: One of the best real-time strategy games with a bit or history throwen in.

1) Total Annihilation: The best RTS I have ever played in terms of gameplay, but lackluster storyline.

2) Baldur's Gate 2: Arguably the best RPG ever.

3) Super Mario World: Loved this game when I was younger, and still like to play it every once in a while.

Theres too many to choose from but here

1. FF7 - Needs no explanation

2. Paper Mario - Witty dialogue, undeniable charm and excelent gameplay

3. GTA San Andreas - Love it

Others that I would have chosen on another day - Mass Effect, Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Mario 64, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Gears of War, Skies of Arcadia, Metal Gear Solid 1, Resident Evil 4 etc.

Yeah I actually don't really know. The only one set in stone is FF7.

zelda twilight princess (longest zelda larger worlds and best story of all the zeldas)

metroid prime (not just a fps had alot of puzzles to deepen the game form just your typical run and gun fps, great atmosphere makes you really feel deserted on a isolated planet)

Resident Evil 4 (one of the scariest games ever, the sound is really imersive and builds tension gameplat never gets old because as soon as you get tired of one place you're in another, gets you blood pumpimg like no other game , when there are alot of zombies and your short on ammo and you just know you're done for when suddenly you get a lucky break because you shot the zombies head of, no other game can give you that feeling)

honorable mentions ssbm, halo ce, pefect dark 64, zelda oot and zelda mm, gta3
