Let's see if anyone played good games that had not so good graphics.

Besides the destruction you could do to environments, visually Red Faction was not exactly good looking, but a damn fine shooter and fun gameplay.

So.

10. Red Faction (PS2)

9. Tomb Raider 1 (Saturn)

8. Goldeneye (Debatable if the graphics were bad but sub 15FPS sure was)

7. Turok 2 / Perfect Dark (dem 15FPS tho)

6. Super monkeyball (Gamecube)

5. Metropolis Street Racer (Dreamcast and is the source to the later PGR on XBOX)

4. Loaded (PS1, gameplay and graphics so bad it was good.. literally)

3. Alien Trilogy (PS1)

2. Alien Colonial Marines (PC.. it's ugly.. it had issues but on PC it was highly tweakable and in the end had a tight working game that i enjoyed far more than i wanted to)

1. Shadow of Memories (PS2)

This is relative. Great looking games back in the day may have aged terribly. Like Rome Total War.

I guess if you were to limit it to "games that looked awful even when they came out," Mount and Blade: Warband should be top of the list.

Yes, all games i added were ugly on release, obviously even that is still subjective.

Tomb Raider 1 on Saturn is definitely ugly compared to the PS1/ PC versions, as is seeing the N64's horrifyingly low framerates, graphics are framerate, visual quality.. not just how the image looks.

I remember Goldeneye being.... idk. Never thought it was ugly. I just thought all games looked like that back then.

Most PS1 games look like shit.

N64 had low res blotchy textures, but it at least had filtering.

I don't know what bad console ports do in that list, red faction was not ugly at all, at least not the pc version, same goes for tomb raider.

Also goldeneye was considered a milestone , it was one of the first 3d shooters with freelook.

I can agree with perfect dark though but I don't get turok 2, that wasn't bad at all for that time.

I don't think I played the rest of those games, I was more of a pc gamer at that time, when it was still way better to have a pc than today, since a lot of games released on pc and only a full gen later on the consoles, since the consoles could simply not run most new pc games.

I don't have a Top Ten. Just this one which I still play. Most games look bad in the eyes of many gamers years later. So, it should only apply to the game's original release date when the graphics can be put in historical context.

That also means taking the original game resolution into account. Quake looked pretty bad back in 1996 because the only playable version was the 320x240 VGA version.

Didn't really like Dead Rising 3's graphics when I first saw them, a lot of brown and washed out colors.

But it's a heck of a fun game !

1) deus ex. it was an ugly game at release and its an uglier game now. still my fav game ever. it was technically ambitious in other ways but blerg.

2) as mentioned before: mount and blade warband. not a good looking game at all but still great fun.

3) Arma. very technically on the edge for other reasons (huge maps, far more complicated game mechanics) and a fun game. but not a looker.

4) stardew valley. looks like a game boy advance game just running at 1080P. but also well worth a play. its a more fully developed harvest moon. i think it was developed by 1 person also which is very impressive.

Twilight Princess? Didn't look bad for a Gamecube game but playing on Wii after Gears Of War and what not on the HD X360, TP looked pretty rubbish. Even on it's own terms, Gamecube only, Windwaker looked miles better.

Thankfully they HD remade it!

I assume it had to be ugly when it came out, not nowadays.

One game I really liked but was hella ugly is Hunted: The Demon's Forge.

Agreed with Deus Ex, Final Fantasy VII and Goldeneye 007.

Super Mario 64 is not bad looking but its sequels are a lot better looking.

GTAIII is another ugly looking game (even the PC version).

Agreed, just picked up DS3 again after taking a 2 month break to play some witcher 3, deus ex : mankind divided, Metal gear solid V, and MAN.... even at ultra settings with 4x DSR it looks like poop.

Dragon Age: Origins. I personally consider this to be the last truly great game from Bioware, and it looked ugly as sin the day it released.

Falcon on the Atari 7800, great game but ugly graphics for it's time. I debate the Super Mario 64 claims because when it was released it was considered to be an amazing looking game, even the magazines gave it good marks on it's graphics.

For their time of release. Fallout New Vegas.

Its engine, its assets and right down to that yellow piss filter the game used lol

Not even modders were able to save how it looks.

MSR didn't have ugly graphics. It was mediocre, but not horrible.

@charizard1605: I'm going to have to disagree. MH4U isn't amazing looking, but considering it's on a handheld, it looks damn good. The animations for the player character and monsters are top notch, too.

@TheShadowLord07: Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about LBW. Great game in a lot of ways, but the visuals were just bland and uninspired. It lacked the certain something that make games like Wind Waker, Minish Cap, or Majora's Mask 3D (by modern standards) look great.

Most early 3D games on consoles and PC from from the '80s to '90s. Their graphics have aged horribly. 3D arcade games have aged quite well though.

Many of the late 1990s early 2000's games when they just started using 3d models were really ugly. Still some were fun, like in 2001 i got Wizardry 8 and it was great, but damn that 3d engine was rough, bad draw distance and flat and bland terrain.

I actually think the orignal Halo really holds up though, when i compare it to other 3d games from 2001 it actually looks great and the scale of the levels were big for its time.

The most recent game i can think of with ugly graphics would probably be ME Andromeda. The graphics look really unfinished like they were tossed together really quickly without any care.

I said one of the first and it's the first for console, that's why it was a milestone. Quake was the first that used 3D polygons in a first person shooter, and that pretty much defines the beginning of 3d fps.

@i_p_daily: I still like the look of those N64 wrestling games, even today I don't find them to be ugly. Now the acclaim WWE games on the ps1, Warzone I think it was called, those were ugly.

Deus Ex looks ugly as a 2000 game.

TimeSplitter 2 lookes pretty cartoonish but it is a great game that runs in 60 FPS on 3 consoles.(PS2,GC,Xbox)

Dark Souls games aren't exactly known for their excellent graphics (although, somewhat paradoxically, they have some of the best atmospheres in gaming) but Dark Souls 2 is especially ugly. The world is bright, way too bright for a series that is noted for its oppressing darkness. Their is a half baked torch mechanic in the game that only really makes sense for a darker world. It almost feels like the brightness was jacked up near the very end of game's development. If you look close enough the textures are bad, sometimes N64 bad (look around the corner from the Dragon Aerie bonfire). The world itself is often disjointed, different areas feel haphazardly tacked together in ways that make no logical sense. Many areas are simply empty and devoid of detail (e.g. Drangleic Castle).

Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Most of the game is inexplicably washed out. Lot's of pop in and aliasing issues. It looks more like a 2007 game than 2017.

Um, Quake beat it by a whole year, and there were even others before that.

I said one of the first and it's the first for console, that's why it was a milestone. Quake was the first that used 3D polygons in a first person shooter, and that pretty much defines the beginning of 3d fps.

First on console. You didn't mention that part so I could only think that you meant first of all time. :P

I said one of the first, that pretty much covered it.

System Shock, Ultima Underworld, Marathon, Terminator: Future Shock.

Sure, I guess if you count 6th as one of the first. I guess literal and figurative are both one and the same for you. :)
