With the obsession of open world, leveling up and just upgrade/points systems...the whole mentality of having to put more in a game, rather than focus on story, simplicity and gameplay....of course character developement is part of that. I miss the old days of just linear but acceptable gaming thats fun and just works....games these days seem lackluster and just relies on these perk and upgrades...and i think it started from COD. (not too sure)

Open world games at least for me get tedious and boring...having to travel and travel around to get to a destination, sure i don't want a game to play it self and tell me what to do..but their are better examples of balanced gaming. A linear experience with the illusion of open world is what works best, IMO...something that naughty dog is trying to achieve with uncharted 4.

Simply put what i want a story focused game with satisfying gameplay...that same fun over and over again. Not making a shitty game and making up for it with upgrades and open world because its soooo BIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG...ughn

Thoughts?

Depends on the game. Focus on narrative is not always the right thing to do. Simple games are not always the best.

Focus on gameplay yes, but even that may require quantity as well.

Fucking preach on the upgrade systems, so much unnecessary bullshit that doesn't add depth or even meaningful change to the core gameplay overtime, just bullshit busy work to take advantage of the fact that a video game player is compulsive.

Open World games are tedious because those games have some shitty mission design and pacing. Rockstar got a bit better about it with GTA 5, but that game's still a Rockstar game, so naturally it's still bloated as hell with worthless filler missions.

Agreed. We need less open world games and more RPG elements in action games.

I'm playing through Child of Light right now and your thread reminded me of it. They do a lot of things right that you have complaints about:

It's pretty much linear, but open world in the sense that there's a lot to explore in each area, and you can backtrack later (you can warp to any area you've already visited whenever you want) to complete a few sidequests.

The main focus of the game is on the story, fights, and finding secrets in the world. Leveling up takes almost no effort or time. No grinding necessary.

There are upgrade paths in addition to the leveling up, which is probably my biggest gripe. I was leveling up so quickly and getting tired of having to pause my game every 5-10 minutes and pick which upgrade path to take. After a while I just held onto the upgrade points for a long time and did them all at once at larger time intervals.

Yeah I definitely agree... there are only certain open-world games that I enjoy. Some open world games just feel like a chore after a while. I generally prefer games that are more linear, with great story/character development.

Having said that, Witcher 3 is one of my most wanted games, so there are some open world games that I love!

LoL.... this also bothered me a while back...... its not going to stop....... get comfy because because they're going to put open world into everything........ every game already has some sort of Artificial Progression System..... so you should be used to that already.

LOL No I was referring to him having a dinner with two very rich, openly gay hoteliers in NYC recently. At the party he said marriage equality should be left up to states. But when not in their presence he has been very vocal about being against same sex marriage. Just laughing at the BS

They're the current fad. It used to be platformers, then RTS and top down RPGs for PC, then FPSs. Now this.

It will stop. Just not overnight.

Give me an example of a DOMINANT fad (like a genre that causes saturation in the market) that actually "sticks".

That just doesn't happen. No one has the stomach to develop, much else consume something for that long. I give it 5 years before something else comes along.

I said Dominant, FPSs are no longer dominant. Unless you consider financial success to be dominance, in which case yes COD and Battlefield alone are the lifeline of this fad.

I'm talking about something that really saturates the market, and open world third person games are definitely the current, dominant fad, and it will fall within this decade. Who knows, maybe next we'll have artistic minimalism as our next fad, that would be refreshing.

gameplay freedom > story

good open world RPG doesn't even need a heavy story. you make your own journey. story games are for simpletons. besides, if you want a good story, go see a movie or read a book. game stories are shit even in most best-cases.

i honestly hope you burn in hell. you filthy casual. i hate the fact that studios serve more audience like you. YES, i understand that there is obviously a demand, but it's the case of master-chef starting to do BigMacs simply because BigMacs sell more.

edit: sorry for the harshness. nothing personal. it was meant generally for such audience.

I'm saying just because something becomes a genre doesn't make it a fad. A fad is, by definition, temporary. A genre can become a fad, and can cease to be a fad, without ever losing popularity. Like FPSs. Cod and Battlefield continue to be insanely popular, and there are, or were, a shit ton of FPS games developed for PC. But that is no longer the "go to strategy" to make money. Now it's cinematic, open world, graphical showcases which began with Watch Dogs.
