It is not an encode mistake.

Films are 24fps, do you complain about them being a low framerate?

Check out the last link.

"The Bacon" cutscene actually runs in realtime @ 60fps... (Uber polish alert)

The gameplay is 30fps...

That's actualy impressive compared to Uncharted 2 since the majority of it's cutscenes are video files.

Cutscenes are often done in video form to mask the loading and make transitions smoother. If they're running at 60 frames in the game I suppose that's possibly technically impressive given the limited storage space.

It also shows that this game is clearly polished. The first Gears game had cutscenes with 20fps...

To be honest I like my cutscenes being rendered in realtime unless it's blatant CGI.

Cutscenes like Gears, MGS4, Killzone 2,Resident Evil5 impress me more.

kraken2109

Films would look a lot nicer at 60 frames. Or well, it would be more of a stylistic choice than with games, where a higher framerate is always preferable.

At first I thought someone ran that Gearsvideo through motion interpolation (Making it 60fps). My jaw actually dropped when the gameplay went back to 30fps. Makes u wonder how a 60fps Uncharted cutscene would look like.

Well I did encode a 60fps Uncharted 2 cutscene awhile back. lol

They are really polished cutscenes. Remember the framerate of Anya's reveal in the first Gears of War? It was a 20fps stutter-thon.We've come a long way.

Running 720p @ 60fps in any Unreal Engine 3 console game is impressive to me. lol

On a serious note. I wonder if there is a HD version of this video?

I can see the FXAA a little better.

The new Lord Of The Rings film will be shown at 48fps, and Peter Jackson wants it to become industry standard.

To get a good idea... Convert a random Lord of The Rings movie into 60fps using software motion interpolation.

I recently re-encoded the Zone of Enders 2 opening trailer into 60fps.

Sure, like how games at 30FPS are fine.

I haven't read into the tech side of this much at all, but Cameron and Jackson state that most digital projectors will only require a firmware upgrade. Jackson says WB estimates 10,000 screens will be capable of projecting the film at 48 FPS by December 2012.

To my knowledge The Hobbit is the first movie to be projected at being projected at a high framerate.

correct me if i am wrong, don't they make movies at 24fps because that makes the action on screen appear as close to real life as possible. if you sped the frame rate up to video game levels, what would happen?sts106mat
I suppose it would look better than reality.

But for serious now, reality is rendered at an infinite framerate. The only thing limiting it for us is the ability of our eyes and brains to perceive it. Once upon a time they did tests with jet pilots and I forget the specifics, but humans can perceive quite a bit past 60 frames per second.

As for the origin of 24fps.

Originally, 24 fps was chosen based on the technical requirements of the early sound era. I suspect it was the minimum speed required to get some audio fidelity out of the first optical soundtracks. They would have settled on the minimum speed because of the cost of the film stock. 35mm film is expensive, and the cost per foot (to buy the negative stock, develop it and print it),has beena fairly significant part of any film budget.

So we have lived with 24 fps for 9 decades--not because it's the best film speed (it's not by any stretch), but because it was the cheapest speed to achieve basic acceptable results backin 1927 or whenever it was adopted.Peter Jackson

I believe it was a way to cut costs on film reels in the days of very old, that happens to affect how films are made in the present.
