Hello friends,

In this thread we talk about what are the best games of 90s shall we? the golden age of gaming.

and heres what I think are

Metal Gear Solid

Still one of the all time greatest game. the game was masterpiece and how you done cinematic game without being a movie game. best mix of stealth, action, boss fights, level design, one of the greatest story in gaming, badass iconic solid snake. 10/10 amazing game. it worth PS1 for me and I was not even into consoles.

Quake

The real Quake game. not abomination quake 2 or gone fully MP quake 3. the only true Quake. took Doom formula and turn into unique interesting setting with also inventing free mouse look. this game is the reason why we have 3D games today. amazing game. another 10/10.

Doom (1993)

Although game is outdated today but in 1993 it was like best thing ever made. wayy ahead of everything and invented FPS genre back in days known as Doom clones. This and Quake are the reason why we have 3D gaming today.

Half life

In 1998 this game change the shape of gaming forever. playing this game in 1998 feel like you travel in future as this game is waay ahead of everything that came out in 1998. and its the reason why this game still regard as among greatest game of all time bar none. the game is pure perfection from start to finish. it definitely introduce story telling and cinematic elements in FPS games without being cinematic. genious design.

System Shock 2

Now This is by far best game of 90s bar none. purest immersive sim, most deep and complex level design, iconic villain Shodan is. another 90s game that was ahead of its time. this game spawn multiple spritual successor like bioshock, Prey, Dead space but none of them come close to it.

so friends, what are the best 90s games? lets discuss.

Grand theft auto 2

GTA 2 was better than GTA 1 in every single way, it was more fun, it was more whacky and it had a really cool "5 minutes into the future" setting that I still miss in games to this day.

Missions included rounding up people as a bus driver and turning them into hotdogs to spike a rivals restaurant.

Equiping a fire truck with a flamethrower instead of a water hose and waiting for the call to be made about a fire.

Driving mini taxis equipped with bombs.

The game is unique as it was both fun in its missions as well as just messing around in the open world. I'll never forget that GTA 2 had a dedicated fart/burp button or where all the secret stashes with tanks are located.

Donkey Kong Country 2

This game is as hard or as easy as you want it to be. Got the game mastered? Try the later levels. Got a tough time getting through sections? Play together with a partner.

It also has some of the best battles I've ever encountered in a game.

Medal of Honor

I often reminisce to a time when war shooters were still good. Can't forget the game that started it all, with pure intentions from the mind behind Saving Private Ryan. I also love how MOHAA (one of my favourite games ever) is basically a remake of this one.

I'd wager that Underground is still enjoyable to this day. The team later made Medal of Honor Frontline, another smash hit success.

Super Mario Bros 3 + SMW

These two platformers are so good, in fact I'm playing Super Mario World right now on my Retroid Pocket 3 which of course... is themed with SNES style buttons and as a cherry on top: the game works in widescreen too. Without any of the issues you'd expect from forcing a sprite game to work in widescreen.

The 90s never went away.

Definitely donkey Kong but also streets of rage 2 was epic and still holds up today in the beat-em-up genre.

So many lol. I don’t think the 90s can be beat by any other decade. We were lucky to have SNES/Sega wars in the early to mid 1990s, then the rise of PlayStation. MGS, Zelda, StarCraft, Half-Life, JRPGs like Final Fantasy franchise, Xenogears, Vagrant Story. Even Sony got into JRPGs with Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Legaia. Nintendo had classics like Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario 64, Golden Eye, WWF No Mercy, and more. There are just too many to list lol.

@warmblur: btw my friend, late 90s was golden period in gaming. much better than dark era late 00s/early 10s you praise because mirrors edge, sleeping dogs, spec ops the line, far cry 3 released.

only Metro 2033/last light and STALKER 1 was saving grace of dark era of gaming.

Don't need to mention Sega's classics like SOR, Golden Axe etc or games like Doom, Wolf3D, Duke3D, Dark Forces, those games go without saying, but here are some of my favourites from the 90s that don't get mentioned so much.

@mycatismilk: Pac-Man World = underrated. The remake was a blast on Switch. It's extremely simple, but it's still fun, and the retro levels are a great change of pace.

I'll copy @Jag85 and list my favorite for each year. Game of decade in bold.

1990 - Super Mario World

1991 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

1992 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2

1993 - Gunstar Heroes

1994 - Super Metroid

1995 - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

1996 - Super Mario 64

1997 - Goldeneye 007

1998 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

1999 - Pokemon Gold/Silver

Pretty much like every decade, Mario and Zelda dominate. Some Sega is sprinkled in here, though, back when Sonic was fun and Sega had wacky new, fun IPs like Gunstar Heroes.

The 90's was a remarkable decade for gaming. It was the decade where games transitioned from 2D pixel graphics to 3D rendering and games on CD-ROM (unless you were on Nintendo, but the N64 was still cool). Chip Tunes were dying out and more advanced CD audio was becoming the norm.

Good times to be a gamer.

It's weird to see so many people list FF7 and not FF6, despite 6 being the superior game.

PC gaming from early to mid 90s was pretty awesome. Lots of new ideas. Cool times.
