Just upgraded to Windows 11 yesterday. Actually kinda forgot about it until I updated my BIOS while trying to resolve an issue (turns out it's just my CMOS battery went flat). The new BIOS automatically turned on my TPM, which I had deliberately kept off to stop Microsoft nagging me, thus instantly making me eligible for an upgrade. Did a quick research, apparently the recent December update essentially fixed all the major issues, so I thought; "what the hey," and jumped in.

So far, after turning the Widgets off and putting the Start menu on the bottom left where it belongs, it just feels like Windows 10 with its corners filed off. Everything works as before. Kinda makes me wonder why this had to be a whole new version and not an update or a Service Pack, but whatever. Microsoft's gonna Microsoft, I guess. There is this new tabbed Explorer though, which made me think; "whoa, Microsoft, I've been using this on Linux for years. Nice to see you finally catch up."

Still in the "taking it out for a spin" phase, though.

i got callisto protocol for xmas (no spoilers here), been playing it for the last few days and got to say it genuinely feels less a game and more a tech demo. you do a lot of walking. a lot. and squeezing through gaps.

it's clearly a game whose primary aesthetic concern is realism. combat and movement is weighty and laboured for that "realistic" feel (think rdr2). the graphics are reasonably close to photo realistic (ish). the player's character model is incredibly detailed and one of the best i've seen.

the environments are what you'd expect from the premise, dimly lit, industrial, steam spewing vents, flickering lights, bloody scrawls on walls "shoot the tentacles" etc, pipes clanking, floorboards creaking, structure groaning... extremely dead space (i dont know how plagiarism laws work in gaming but i imagine visceral have got a strong case here lol). enemy design is... ok, it's very dark and they attack as soon as they appear so hard to get a proper good look at them, but from what i have seen they're more derivative and repetitive than impressive, mainly enemies in various stages of virus infection (think tlou). combat is gory but simplistic.

the standout thing about cp is that despite the painstaking effort for realism and to tick all the cliche horror genre boxes, there's not been a single "scary" event yet. not one. not a slight raising of the pulse, not a single bit of wariness / hesitation to enter a new area etc. there's been plenty of jump scare attempts, every single one has failed. and that's not some cocky wannabe alpha flex - i want to feel scared, alien isolation got me so bad at one point i screamed and threw the controller (the look of disgust on my dog's face sat next to me at the time still shames me) - but it is genuinely fascinating how they've put so much work into creating this incredible looking game where every detail's purpose is to create a tense, unsettling and horrific atmosphere, and yet it can't even muster a single scare. i can't remember every experiencing anything like it

@Macutchi: The dodge system is so easy, I replay the game on hard difficulty and while the game is indeed pretty for an UE4, Callisto Protocol could have been the one that replaced Dead Space but fails to do so. I'm now far looking forward to Dead Space Remake.

i replayed ds a few years ago on pc and it held up well. well paced, atmospheric, tense, mechanically sound. cp is neither a spiritual successor or just plain successor to ds it promised to be. all style and no substance, or all fur coat and no knickers as we supposedly say here in england. i'm about two thirds in and without hyperbole not a single scare

@davillain: Been dipping into Phantasm. Usually against reboots, but this is a series be for bringing back. Lot of creative ideas and cool stuff constrained by budget. From what I can tell it more or less invented Slender Man before Slender Man was a thing.

Wouldn't want some Blumhouse thing though, want someone like Rami to handle it. John Carpenter to do the music but 100% keep the original theme, just tweak it.
