I've enjoyed both series, but I'd take Street Fighter by a long shot.
There was once a time when things were different though. I remember seeing MK for the first time and thinking "this is it! Games will never look more real than this!!!!".... I remember being sad thinking that there is no way a gaming console could produce those kinds of graphics. Then to my surprise MK was announced for the Genesis and SNES.
Like many of our fellow system warriors I was in my youth and got caught up in the whole "mature" business. I had to choose between getting a Genesis or an SNES and like a fool I chose the Geneses simply based on having the good old ABACABB (for those who dont know, the all mighty BLOOD CODE!).
Well I soon came to realize that MK was all flash and no substance and found myself running back to Street Fighter with open arms. Watching Sub Zero decapitate a guy can only entertain for so long and the gameplay just wasn't there.
I can still play Super Turbo today and truly enjoy all the nuances of the gameplay. MK on the other hand is something I might check out from time to time for a dose of nostalgia. UMK3 is about as good as it got, and in some ways could be competitive, but the skill ceiling is ridiculously low. Not to mention every version of the game is broken in multiple ways when you really start dissecting the possibilities.
That said, I am looking forward to the new MK. I think they chose the best direction they possibly could for the series. But at the end of the day Street Fighter has given us some legendary timeless games that can be enjoyed at all skill levels, while MK has had a couple of decent titles, but nothing genre defining.
