German news site golem.de has an interview online with Shawn Layden where he states that there will definitely be a new generation and not an evolutionary model like with smartphones.

Btw, for those wondering what he actually means by "new generation" (outside of power upgrades) it's this:

  • PS5 games won't play on PS4 or PS4 Pro;
  • PS4 games may or may not play on the PS5 (we'll have to wait and see on that one).

I hope not. I'm confident that by the time PS5 drops we'll be able to at least play PS4 games on it. I'm pretty sure Sony is smart enough to at least match the competition's capabilities by next gen. We'll see, though, lol

So I guess their next console is going to be so architecturally different, there's no way it could be expected to support BC. Wow, I'm really looking forward to hearing more.

We heard this from Cerny and he did stress cpu needs to change. They really did test cpu increases on the pro. Even MS cited compatibility on why they set up cpu in similar fashion for X1X. There has to be a next generation especially when it comes to cpu. I mean game logic has to get more complex with much bigger scenes and network as well. Compatibility and you cant really say the current console cpus are overkill like say pcs.

Another thing is Hardware is important for Sony's business. When ps4 family starts to slow down, they gotta refresh the gen. I feel like this is not going to be long. A Way Out dev will be happy lol. The big question is will ps5 play ps4 games.

I'm going to take the wait and see approach. If it's going to be a new gen entirely, so long as it plays my PS4 games, I really don't care. If they pull another late model PS3/PS4 approach with no BC, then it won't be a system I buy at launch. If PS5 allows PS4 game BC, then I may get one at launch for the inevitable 4k with proper HDR output for my TV.

Interesting read. And he has a point; the first 60mil is much easier compared to the next 60mil. Very good to hear his own awareness for the need for more games.

I'll wait and see whatever happens because honestly it's too early for me to be too concerned for the next generation. I still have to pick up a PS4 plus I want to get a Switch and an Xbox One X so I have more then enough on my plate right now. Hopefully though the PS5 will be backwards compatible.

hope it winds up BC. I don't think it's reasonable to expect PS4 to be FC after another 3 years - the thing is already rather dated hardware. On the other hand, BC with PS4 will be a big pro-consumer thing to do, and likely help a very rapid launch (because people won't feel like they have to hang onto / finish playing stuff on their PS4s)

The Microsoft model will never work, forward compatibility is a stupid idea. Smart phones are completely different to consoles, with contracts that renew every two years, so getting a new phone every couple of years makes sense, no one is going to pay $400-500 every few years to play 10 year old games with AA and faster frame rates.

Forward compatibility limits devs ambitions, requires them to put in extra work for little reason, and confuses consumers.

You can't just keep throwing in some type of boost mode each gen, so you can keep providing games for the original Xbox One. Phones have a shelf life of about 5 years before being dropped by the handset makers, consoles last longer with just one model. 3 years + 1 year of cross gen games is more than enough time for Pro + Scorpio.

@APiranhaAteMyVa: Is PC a forward compatible model? Does that mean I can expect a 10 year old system to play all the latest games? I don't think FC means much at all, when you get down to the meat of it. I suspect iterative console talk, in this context, is more an allusion to supporting or ditching existing catalogues, i.e. BC.

Of course.

Never doubted it for a second.

That said, I expect BC (for that that use it) should be easier if they continue the X86 approach.

Well, they are throwing Playstation 4 games on Playstation Now soon. They could potentially release the Playstation 5, and you'll just sign up to Playstation Now to be able to play your Playstation 4 & Playstation 3 games...lol.

This was pretty obvious to anyone who wasn't deep in Phil Spencer's bullshit. Forward compatibility is a stupid idea because it holds devs back. We'll eventually have to leave this gen due to power limitations. MS was just making a lot of noise to deceive lems when they said generations were over. It may be over for them since Xbone is a flop but it isn't over for Sony the market leader. With that said, I hope the PS5 is BC since it will most likely be using the same x86 architecture as the PS4. Not launching with BC inbuilt into the PS5 would be a big mistake IMO.

@kingtito: Well, I don't have any insider knowledge, so the wind could blow in any direction. Personally, I don't care about BC because I keep my consoles. I see a contingency, though, where PS5 goes the exotic/high performance route as a means of keeping competition on the back foot.

Microsoft has telegraphed their punch at this point. They are pretty much married to the x86/AMD architecture model by planting their feet on the generationless/BC/PC-Lite model. There would be some advantage to Sony going with something a little nutty with PS5 so long as they have good development tools.

TLDR: Sony has an opportunity to use the well-known X86 technology road map against MS to gain a performance advantage while MS has to solidify their hardware window with Scorpio and whatever lays beyond.

How so? Aren't they releasing a mid-gen upgrade just like Sony did last year? Where is it written MS is married to mid-gen upgrades from this point on? Why would that matter anyway if they build consoles that are just as or more powerful than the next iteration of Sony's? You're speculating but acting as if that's fact.

We have no idea what the future holds for any of these companies or the direction they may end up going.

See this man right here?

Line for line, he can recite from memory the entirety of this book right here:

And this is why, in the end, it is shown that Sony always says the right things at the right time, why they consistently make effective choices, and why, when they make a mistake now and again, that mistake never buries them.

GamingBolt picked up the story.

Sony Will Definitely Make A PS5, Sony America Boss Asserts

Not a world beyond generations.

While Microsoft may have drawn a line in the sand with the Xbox One X, proclaiming that we are now in a world beyond traditional console generations, and Nintendo may have sidestepped the traditional generational progression entirely, Sony apparently still believes in the conventional understanding of what a console generation is.

Speaking to German outlet Golem.de, PlayStation’s America boss Shawn Layden said that the company will definitely make a PlayStation 5, as it will represent the next step forward for Sony as a whole- though he did also add that it will be a while before PS5 does happen. So if anyone thought that the PS4 Pro meant Sony would be moving to a rolling hardware model, it doesn’t seem like the company has any interest in doing that just yet.

Layden also specifically noted that PS4 Pro exclusive games – games that run only on the PS4 Pro, but not on standard PS4 or PS4 Slim systems – will never happen, either. Both of these are in line with what Sony has previously said- so it should be clear now that even though Microsoft may be following its own trajectory, and Nintendo its own, Sony will continue to stick with what has worked for it so far. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Honestly if they don't move to an iterative they could potentially lose customers.

If MS holds true to what they've been moving towards (with 360 and OG compatibility) then every console moving forward will play every game released which is a major win for console gamers.

If the PS5 releases and it's not BC or if after a year games no longer come to the PS4, then there will be serious backlash.

PC's have always had this advantage. If consoles can gain this advantage too it'll definitely help the consumer.
