  • Sony's flagship game for the first half of the year is drastically downgraded from the 1080P and 60 FPS announced
  • The Adult industry has choosen HD-DVD as their format making it nearly certain that Sony is repeating the betamax incident link
  • In Janurary, the supply has already exceeded demand and the PS3 lies at only 1 million consoles sold.

ps2 was a great console, despite sonys arrogance. the ps3 has lost almost every strenght and advantage that the ps2 had. this is one of the only times that i wish a company to fail because of their arrogance and immoral actions. they cheat, copy, lie and mistreat costumers and devlopers alike. and now they deserve failure.

Yeah. I saw that review and was really shocked by it, especially when TP only got an 8.8. I'm sure that they will still say "Wait for..." until the end of time. And they'll probably say "Oh, it's just a mini game," but then the fact is that a mini game got a better score than any of their games.

EB offers a deal, trade in your PS2, cables, a second controller and a memory card, to get $100 off a PS3, in what people assume is an attempt to actually move PS3 units.

Looks like EB is forced to take "those measures" since the PS3 isn't "selling as expected." ;)

Heres another link you can add Natural Mystic. Oh by the way, I tried Pm'ing you and it didn't work, sorry. My message didn't provide the links. So, here we are: Sony Hits Generation Gap http://www.thestreet.com/_googlen/newsanalysis/techgames/10332158.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEN&cm_cat=FREE&cm_ite=NA

Sony Hits Generation Gap By Priya Ganapati TheStreet.com Staff Reporter 1/11/2007 8:18 PM EST Click here for more stories by Priya Ganapati It was a happy holiday season for most video-game device makers, as industry sales grew nearly 28% to $3.7 billion in December, but Sony's (SNE - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) next-generation console couldn't outsell its previous version. Sony sold 490,700 of its PlayStation 3 devices in December, according to research firm NPD, bringing total devices sold since launch to 687,300 units. Those figures appear to contradict Sony's own recent report that, as the company had predicted, it has shipped 1 million PS3s to the U.S. so far. A possible reason for the discrepancy in PS3 numbers could be that many units are still tied up in the retail channel, wrote P.J. McNealy, an analyst for independent research firm American Technology Research "We believe that Sony's shipment number refers to a channel unit number, and our research indicates that a channel range of 20% to 30% for the PS3 is not unreasonable at this time," wrote McNealy. "This implies 200k to 300k units in the channel -- in transit, in warehouses and in retail shelves." Still, wrote McNealy, there is cause for investor concern about the demand surrounding Sony's rather expensive PS3 console. Despite the seeming interest for the device, there are still PS3s available on shelves in some stores, wrote McNealy. "This is in stark contrast to the Wii availability, which by-and-large has remained quickly sold out both at retail and on Web sites," he wrote. "While the PS3 launch is seven weeks old, we find it a little troubling to find the console in stock." Sony's 20-gigabyte PS3 model retails for $499; the 60-GB model sels for $599. Sony said NPD numbers don't reflect sales in Canada. They also don't account for all of the retail outlets in the U.S., the largest being Wal-Mart (WMT - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating). "The last week of December alone we shipped 170,000 units, so it is likely that some units might be transit from the retailer's warehouses to the stores," said Dave Karraker, a Sony spokesperson. But better news was that Sony's older PlayStation 2 console was second among all hardware systems with 1.4 million units sold. That's a bright spot for for the company, said Anita Frazier, video-game industry analyst for the NPD Group. "The PS2 numbers show that a legacy system does not necessarily have to suffer tremendously when new hardware is launched," said Frazier. "The PS2 is now at such a great price point that makes it easy for more casual or occasional gamers to pick up a system and there is definitely a few more years of life in the PS2 and publishers can reap the benefits of its huge install base." Sony's rival Nintendo (NTDOY - commentary - Cramer's Take) had good news all around. Its handheld gaming system, the Nintendo DS, emerged as the overall winner in December with sales of 1.6 million units, bringing the total installed bases of the device this year to 9.2 million. Among the newest console systems, the company's Wii was the winner in December. with 604,200 units sold, and a total of 1.1 million units sold since the launch in November. The Wii sells for $249. Nintendo's success wasn't a complete surprise; on Wednesday, the company raised its full-year profit forecast by 20% on the basis of strong sales of DS and Wii games. Microsoft's (MSFT - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) Xbox 360 came in fourth with 1.1 million units sold in December Overall, video-game hardware sales grew 59.2% to $1.6 billion in December Software sales grew 5.4% to $1.7 billion in Dec. and 6.4% to $6.5 billion in 2006, said NPD. Among game titles, Microsoft's Gears of War for the Xbox 360 ranked No. 1 in Dec. sales with 815,700 units sold, followed by Activision's (ATVI - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) Guitar Hero 2 for the PS2 at 805,200 units. Electronic Arts' (ERTS - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating)' Madden NFL '07 title for the PS2 came in third at 737,100 units. The video-game industry grew 19% in all of 2006 to clock $12.5 billion in sales.

ArsTechnica slams "misleading" Sony

Sony misleads multiple times on MotorStorm resolution, revises PS3 sales goals to allow for success It's starting to get frustrating to cover Sony. From being misleading in their Emmy press-releases and then pulling the evidence, to switching their stated manufacturing goals, I just can't keep the stories straight. The Emmy thing was okay—we all make mistakes, and perhaps Sony just jumped to a few conclusions. But the issue of Motorstorm's resolution is much thicker and smacks of negligence. It's not like the gaming press made up the 1080p, 60fps Motorstorm story by ourselves. Sony employees were telling the press that would be the resolution and the framerate. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt, and say the people running the televisions at trade shows may get their facts wrong. Of course, the Senior Vice-President of Marketing for your company should know better. In the CES keynote, which you can watch here, Peter Dille states that we'll see Motorstorm at 1080p running at 60fps. He makes this point strongly, in an attempt to prove the power of the PS3, before telling us it's the only "true" high definition system on the market. I would say that point is arguable at best, but there is no doubt he was selling Motorstorm as an example of their 1080p content. After all that buzz, they're now saying Motorstorm will be at 720p and run at 30fps. At least according to SCEA. Then again, at this stage who do you believe? I don't even think Sony knows anymore. Mr. Dille also says they hit their goal of shipping 1 million systems in that speech. Since when was that their goal? We reported on what their actual goal was: they wanted 4 million by the end of the year, and 2 million at launch. That was then brought down to 2 million shipped when they talked to the press. When was it ever 1 million? Engadget has an even more damning interview with Peter Dille. Let me repeat that he is the Senior Vice-President of Marketing. He should know better than to give a keynote that directly contradicts his own interviews: Engadget: So, you think you're still on track for 2 million units in 2006? Peter Dille: Yeah. Engadget: I'm gonna hold you to that. Peter Dille: Okay, you can hold us all to it! How can we, when you say now that your goal has been only a million units? Well, I'm holding you to it. You missed your goal. I'm sorry. Why can't you admit it publicly instead of changing the numbers and hoping no one notices? Sony, you need to rein in your public relations staff and start telling us the truth. You need to either make sure you know you can hit the goals that you announce, or be willing to admit that you missed them when you fall short. Revising the number after the fact is not good enough. The more these things happen the less credibility you have, and the less credibility you have the harder it is for us who're reporting your claims to take them seriously. I'd like to think I can trust you, but after this past week I feel like anything your representatives say is going to be suspect at best, and at worst an outright lie.

Actually, it's a PS2, an extra controller, and a memory card. And it is a bad deal. Trading in one of the best consoles ever for just $100 off of one of the worst consoles ever?

Even with all the bad press, I`m still wondering if Sony can pull it off again. There are a lot of casuals in the US who could care less and that will buy the console anyway. I`m just going to wait and see how it all pans out in 2007.

Maybe they won't care about some of that stuff, but they will care about $600 (and even about $500)

This massive breakfast of ownage brought to you by Sony, selling overrated systems since 2007 *cough* Playstation3 This Forum brought to you by Natural_Mystic, because the world likes intelligence and intelligent people my friend bought a Ps3 so far the only thing he's done with it (after beating resistance in two days) is hitched it up to the net to play Line-Rider, Line-Rider because the Ps3 has awesome graphical power and Remember Kids, what happens when we attack the crabs weak point? I don't know how old the original interview is, but this has been linked a few times in the past couple of days:

Natural_Mystic, have you been adding stuff that other people link in this thread?

*cough*

Topic Creator, add this:

I don't know how actively the TC will update this thread, but here is some stuff that he might have missed that needs to be integrated here. Comes from the original timeline.

While it's not all of Sony's fault, they have done little to apologize for their delays and arrogant statements. It's a bad trend that they've started, and the more they continue the more we'll be seeing article after article on Gamespot.....day after day about something else they've done to flaw the PS3's image.

I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of flaming cow responses, but hey that's expected. I can understand their crankiness b/c I know I'd hate to be in their shoes atm. Hopefully Sony will have some sort of eye-opener to the amount of distaste they've started among gaming consumers, and will get back to what they used to do best.

I don't know how old the original interview is, but this has been linked a few times in the past couple of days:

Jan 15, 2007: Valve Software's chief Gabe Newell says PS3 a "total disaster on so many levels"

Natural_Mystic, have you been adding stuff that other people link in this thread?

*cough*

[QUOTE="buuzer0"]Topic Creator, add this:

Jan 9, 2007: PS3 demand cools as retailers see returns, slow salesbuuzer0

I don't know how actively the TC will update this thread, but here is some stuff that he might have missed that needs to be integrated here. Comes from the original timeline.

Other analysts weigh in on the PS3. PS3 misses sales goals by 25%, has "'poor sales' in North America," and experiences loss of confidence in product. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12397
