https://blog.playstation.com/2021/03/18/next-gen-vr-on-ps5-the-new-controller/

Design

The first thing you’ll notice with our next-gen VR controller is the unique design, which takes on an “orb” shape that allows you to hold the controller naturally, while playing with a high degree of freedom. There are no constraints with how you’re moving your hands, providing developers with the ability to create unique gameplay experiences.

We also designed the new controller with great ergonomics in mind, so it’s well-balanced and comfortable to hold in each of your hands. We applied learnings from testing users with a range of hand sizes, as well as the decades of insights from controllers across all PlayStation platforms. The result is an iconic design that will change how VR games are played.

Features

The new VR controller enables players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way. There are several features, including key features from the DualSense controller, which match our vision for what next-generation VR games can be.

Adaptive triggers: Each VR controller (Left and Right) includes an adaptive trigger button that adds palpable tension when pressed, similar to what’s found in the DualSense controller. If you’ve played a PS5 game, you’ll be familiar with the tension in the L2 or R2 buttons when you press them, such as when you’re drawing your bow to fire an arrow. When you take that kind of mechanic and apply it to VR, the experience is amplified to the next level.

Haptic feedback: The new controller will have haptic feedback optimized for its form factor, making every sensation in the game world more impactful, textured and nuanced. When you’re traversing through rocky desert or trading blows in melee combat, you’ll feel the difference, magnifying the extraordinary visual and audio experience that’s so central to VR.

Finger touch detection: The controller can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers. This enables you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.

Tracking: The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset through a tracking ring across the bottom of the controller.

Action buttons / analog sticks: The Left controller contains one analog stick, the triangle and square buttons, a “grip” button (L1), trigger button (L2) and Create button. The Right controller contains one analog stick, the cross and circle buttons, a “grip” button (R1), trigger button (R2) and Options button. The “grip” button can be used to pick up in-game objects, as one example.

SIE’s Product, Engineering, and Design teams have collaborated to build our new VR controller from the ground up with a goal of making a huge leap from current-gen VR gaming. We’re thrilled with the controller we developed, but what matters now is how game creators will take advantage of the features to design the next generation of VR experiences. Prototypes of our new VR controller will be in the hands of the development community soon, and we can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with and how the controller helps bring their imagination to life!

There’s still much more to share about the next-generation of VR on PS5. On behalf of all of us at SIE, I want to thank you for taking this journey with us!

Good guy Sony, always taking us to the future. Giving us fresh experiences. Looking forward to PS5 VR!

How about you, SW? You pumped or what?

So they went with adaptive triggers for vr. Interesting. It will definitely raise the immersion for gunplay.

If this comes in a bundle with PS5, I'll just get everything that comes with it despite its gonna be pricy. I rather get everything upfront and not pay anything later such as this.

Certainly a step up from repurposing the old Move dildos.

Look like the Oculus controllers.

Looks okay but I still can’t find myself caring about VR.

The graphics take a hit, games are mostly limited to being first person, it’s pricey considering the amount of support it gets, and the only real standout title I heard about was RE 7 which can be played without VR.

Also Sony is courting a lot of 1-2 hour on rails trash indie games on there to boost the number of titles on PS VR to try and convince more prolific devs to jump on the wagon.

Controllers aside, it's the motion sickness they need to work on. I would love to play my PSVR a lot more but 10 minutes into most games on it and I have a huge headache if not also feeling nauseous. If they can fix that aspect, then I'll look into buying the new VR. Otherwise, it's a waste of money for me.

Interesting choice of design. I realized they no longer need the lightbar for tracking which is a damn godsent as it just saves on battery power.

A PS5 bundle with a PS5, full PSVR 2 kit and GT7 (Which i really hope will support VR....seems like a no brainer) in the one box could be a very nice seller for Christmas 2022. it could be a great way to give PSVR a good jolt.

As for the controller....looks solid overall. the rings look like they may restrict wrist movement a bit but its not a huge issue (it's not like games have you move your wrist to right angles).

The seem to have a simpler version of what the index controller uses also for working out where your fingers are which is cool.

Also inside out tracking looks confirmed with this which makes sense. tracking boxes/external cameras would be too costly for this.

That's a pretty substantial upgrade from the current controllers. The adaptive triggers are going to be sweet.

Also, "The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset" ... does that mean the headset has camera's on it?

I'd like to see them release some PSVR games for PS5 before the new headset/ controllers arrive. The graphics boost should be quite substantial.

Meh. I guess they’re ok but I’m not interested in VR so they don’t really do anything for me. They look so bulky though.

It's like the Oculus controllers. It lets the headset track the controllers from all angles.

Looks interesting. Hopefully the mimicking of the Oculus controllers is a sign the PSVR2 will close the gap a little between console and PC VR. Playing Skyrim, squadrons, and No man's sky in VR was one of last gens defining and fresh moments for me. I never experienced anything like it in my 30 years of gaming.

That being said, it's all about the games. Show me some games that will make me want it, because as of now, this gen isn't exactly coming out guns blazing with new and original games.

VR works for any camera perspective, and PSVR's flagship game is Astro Bot, a 3rd person platformer, not RE7.

Finger touch detection: The controller can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers. This enables you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.

I am rereading this and holishit this may seems like either some advanced thing or just useless gimmick to drive price up. It be pretty cool if the controller still can detect my finger movement. That and haptic feedback, the possibilites of immersion is hyping me up.

Half life: Alyx immersion is pretty cool too. VR games still trucking along and Sony also gives out VR games as PS+ offering means there is market for both sony and devs.

If I had a choice here, still stick to PC.

The library of VR in general still quite limited and regardless of Sony trying to poach exclusivity shit, the interesting stuff is still coming from PC.

Can also easily hack Oculus exclusives to work on any headset.

They look pretty nice. Will be interesting to see how the rotational precision compares with the more standard design of having the "rings" towards the front of the hand.
