Poll So, what's the best 3D Legend of Zelda game then? (107 votes)

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 28%
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 7%
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker 7%
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 4%
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword 2%
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 52%

The answer is Breath of the Wild, in my opinion, but I know there are some people who feel that there were major strengths to the classic 3D Zelda formula that were lost in Breath of the Wild. Are you one of them? Or does Breath of the Wild stand as the ultimate realization of Zelda to you?

Breath of the Wild was a good effort by Nintendo, but Skyward Sword is still the best Zelda.

I'll always have a soft spot for OoT and I never played MM, but I think BotW was the best. Everything about it was just brilliantly crafted.

There's so much awesomeness in BOTW. Nintendo built an amazing world for discovery, I don't want it to end

It's definitely between Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. None of the others even come close.

I think Breath of the Wild is still too fresh to judge if it has surpassed a classic like Ocarina of Time. People always tend to rate every new Zelda game very highly when it first comes out, so the hype needs to cool down and time is needed to reflect back on it before that judgement can be made. Ask me again next year.

Breath of the Wild.

I won't know for sure until another playthrough or two down the road, but BOTW just might dethrone A Link to the Past as my favorite game of all time.

Majora's Mask for me. Breath of the Wild is a great game, but it is just too much of a grind at times. I also really miss dungeons.

I found it. Not your thread, my mistake. But still it's pretty much the same premise.

I'll just cliff notes what I wrote there.

OoT still has near perfect levels and pacing so it wins out despite aspects not aging too well.

BoTW is a good second, offering freedom and unique entertainment but lacking the dungeon meat of Zelda.

Twilight Princess has strong dungeons but weak everything else, but since I like dungeons so much it comes 3rd.

MM I respect a lot for it's tone and themes and unique storytelling, but it has some really bad mechanics so it's not my favorite.

Wind Waker is generally weak, art is it's only real standout bit, everything else is bog standard Zelda in a way-too-easy package.

And SS sucks.

  1. OoT
  2. TP
  3. MM
  4. SS
  5. BotW
  6. WW

I bumped TP from 3 to 2 after replaying it on the Wii U, but MM could reclaim the spot whenever I decide to play my 3DS copy. SS over BotW is a tough one too, because I haven't replayed it, but like BotW, I was never overtaken by hype and noticed its flaws right away, so I doubt my opinion of it would drastically shift if I played it now. SS is also the complete opposite of BotW in every way to a fault, so that makes it tough to decide between the two as well since they're both such extreme takes on the Zelda formula.

Seriously, BotW isn't all that great. I literally did 5 or 6 shrines in a row where simply making it to the shrine was the challenge. Plus, the game is extremely repetitive. It is the 2nd Zelda game I've played where boredom has seeped into my gameplay. Wind Waker is the other... I've played all TLoZ games since the Nes. Plus, **** the rain / lightning... seriously this can ruin exploration. I've already needed to wait out two lightning storms and a rainfall in order to continue up a mountain...

OoT is my favorite 3D Zelda title. Zelda 2 is my favorite 2D Zelda title.

Ocarina of Time is still the best. Breath of the Wild is the worst "Zelda" game. I'd still rather play it than Wind Waker, but it definitely gave me a much better appreciation for it.

It's really tough for me to place BotW with the rest of the 3D Zelda games, since it's so vastly different from the rest. It's probably between Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time for my favorite traditional 3D Zelda's.

@PikminWorld: BoTW is great, still have a ways to go but so far the dungeons of OoT were better, as was the music. However, the scale and the beauty of breath of the wild blows OoT away. Its a shame that the game is limited by the garbage hardware of the nintendo switch/wii u. It would be better off on a more powerful console such as the PS4 or better yet the PC.

As far as 3D Zelda goes BoTW is definitely in my top 3 and perhaps the best they've done so far. It's sitting right up there with Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time.

Interesting list, I don't see many people appreciating TP these days and it definitely was an amazing game for its time. Majora and Skyward Sword are at the bottom of the list for me though; I absolutely despise the three day system and SS was too restrictive of a Zelda game for me (and those controls, ugh). It is as you said, BoTW and SS are basically polar opposites.

OOT, followed by WW and LttP tied for 2nd.

BotW and MM are somewhere in the middle with the Oracles games.

I never quite understood the hate for TP since it was what everyone at the time wanted: Ocarina of Time 2. If it wasn't for the slow beginning, TP would probably be my favorite Zelda, because it shines over OoT in many aspects, especially the dungeons, which are the best in the series. As for MM, I like it a lot too, because even if it is super different, it does it in a fashion without throwing the Zelda identity away, plus it still has the best side missions out of all them. SS is restrictive and the motion controls can be hit or miss, so I agree in that regard.

Breath of the Wild, easily. While certain other 3D games in the franchise do things better, as a whole I've never seen a Zelda so cohesive in its execution to the greater betterment of the collective.

Majora's Mask is still my favorite. I'd still put OoT over BotW too.

BotW is a great game, though there are some things about it I'm not entirely crazy about that holds it back from being one of my absolute favorites. That said I still think they have a great base to work with with BotW, and I do hope they pull a "Majora's Mask" with it for the next Zelda title, ie reuse the same engine and some of the same assets so that they can have more time to focus on finding more ways to make the next overworld more interesting, vary things up more, add more crazy s***, make more dungeons and make them themed, etc.

BotW but I wish it had that Witcher 3 horse mechanic where the horse will spawn near you when you whistle.
