SNES Classic Edition pre-orders are already selling on eBay for up to $390

Following a number ofrumors that it was going to happen, Nintendo recently announced a Super Nintendo Classic Edition would arrive on September 29 for $79.99. After the limited production run of last year’s NES Classic Mini saw units sell out almost instantly, the company promised there would be “significantly more” stock of the new console. But this hasn’t stopped scalpers taking advantage of people’s fear that they’ll miss out.

With the system still more than three months away from release, several listings have appeared on eBay offering to sell “guaranteed” pre-orders at a huge markup over the retail price. Ars Technicareports that there are 23 “sold” SNES Classics now on the site with a median price of $199. The most expensive unit having been sold for $389.99 - $310 more than the what the console costs.

Most US retailers haven’t even started listing pre-orders for the SNES Classic Edition yet, and are only offering in-stock alerts. Online pre-orders were available on some British retail sites earlier this week, but they sold out very quickly. One US sellers wrote he had "confirmed 6 acquisition of the new mini Nintendo SNES from UK."

Nintendo sold almost 200,000 NES Classics in the US within about a month of its launch. Production ended in April following estimated sales of around 2.3 million units, but this hasn’t satisfied demand, with systems still appearing on resale sites for $200 - $300. If these early indications are anything to go by, it looks as if the console’s successor could face the same issues, especially as Nintendo only plans to ship the SNES Classic Edition until the end of the year.

@boycie: The lack of availability of the NES Classic is definitely increasing hype/price on SNES Classic. I wouldn't be surprised if they are still a pain in the ass to find. I haven't seen them go on Amazon Canada yet, but I'm keeping an eye on the site.

They did say that they are shipping significantly more than the NES classic, but production will end at the end of the year as the NES mini did.

Also just because they are being sold for that price doesn't mean people are buying them. Can't see anyone bidding or buying the ones i've seen.

I would love to see them flood the market so the scalpers get burnd when they try to sell them i can be like will you take $60 seeing the stores have lots of them. I hope the big stores only sell one per person and amozon be like one pre order per credit card.

It doesn't matter how many they ship. They will all sell out.

The sad thing is that they are selling somthing they don't have yet. I wish i was that hard up for money that i would take the time and effert to get a buch of them and flip them like standing in front of a store for a few days that don't do preorders

My approach is to buy one for one of two scenarios:

- If the price is flying up, sell it and use the extra cash to buy some games.

- If the demand isn't driving up the price too much, keep it. It would be fun to go back to some of those games.

Kinda want to sell my pre-order to some chump now :D

For the most part, scalpers have nothing to lose in situations like this. If Nintendo manages to put enough out to satisfy demand even after scalpers attempt to buy a ton of them, then the scalpers can still return them for a refund if they are unopened. It isn't like a scalper buying up concert tickets only for them being stuck with unused tickets when nobody buys them.

Yeah but you can't blame them really. If some people are will to spend that amount on one it must be very tempting to sell it.

When I got my wife a NES mini for last Christmas I purposely destroyed the box so she wouldn't be tempted to sell it.

@boycie: Of course it's a tempting thing but you have to think selflessly, right? So I kind of can blame them for exploiting someone's desire and forcing their hand at charging them for a product that should have been cheaper for the buyer.

I can blame them for not being selfless and purposefully exploiting people for a profit on a product they're selling second-hand.

Just like Nintendo wants. No idea why Nintendo wants that, but they clearly do.

I really hope that Nintendo releases enough to supply the demand and those scum scalpers get royally screwed over.

They should make the Dreamcast 2 and BC all the way back to SMS but that was the old Sega when they were for the gamers by the gamers like MS... Jazz. lolol :P

The thirst is real. We saw Nintendo take the top 2 spots in the March NPDs. There is a real possibility that the year end NPDs could have the Xbox One in 4th place. Think about that...

There are some games missing in action I would have liked to see such as:

• Chrono Trigger
• Sim City
• Tetris Attack
• Harvest Moon
• Super Bomberman

Just to name a few.

Can't control the hype. I want one for collector's purposes. However I'm not paying more than MSRP for it. I'll keep an eye out though. I REALLY am fearful of retail cognoscenti(gamestop, target, walmart employees, etc.) buying all the stuff up as soon as it comes in. Before even hitting shelves. Besides that-

My kid plays SNES games from the Wii VC and on my old cell phone via the ipega. Old Cell phone+ipega=best portable ever.

Every where is sold out for me. I actually wanted one for myself.

Good. Because it already dumb to buy this shit at retail price.

Every place in my country that had them up on site were gone within like 5 minutes. Much faster than with the mini NES back then. So fast that even though I've been refreshing a LOT today I still haven't been able to place a pre-order without it being unavailable already.

That said, none of these stores know how many they will get in the first wave... so they are guessing.

I do hope Nintendo learn from that experience and do provide more stock on this.

Yeah, things like this will be great opportunities for scalpers. Thankfully I'm content enough with Nintendo's VC titles I acquired on Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, hopefully they do good on Switch support when that opens up.

More power to you if you get one for asking price but if you're paying that there is something wrong with you.

It was nice of Nintendo to get in on the retro console act but I can't help but think these things are way over priced and lacking in features but they know their audience alright.

That is a seriously good return on an investment. They'll sell like hot-cakes considering how little Nintendo actually ships out.

Nintendo better do MUCH better when it comes to supplying these things. Unlike the NES classic I actually kinda really want the SNES one.

I wonder who I hate more in this situation: Nintendo for massively underproducing something like the NES Classic, or the asshole scalpers who screw people out of something like this just so they can make a quick buck.

Off topic I see how Nintendo hasn't bothered to restock any of the Zelda series Smash Bros amiibo that BOTW uses. They are all hitting pretty insane prices online now.

You can buy all of the BotW amiibo (except the Guardian) on Target.com, Rider and Archer Link are on Gamestop.com. Also looking at ebay, most are going around 2x MSRP. Sub $30 for a limited figure isn't bad. I wouldn't call that "insane" at all.

I also can't fall in line with all this "asshole scalpers" talk. People who wait hours in line and put in the extra work have kind of earned what they get. This goes on with all sorts of consumer products. Just be glad it's not like retro Jordans. You have to wait in line to sign up for a raffle just for a chance to win the ability to purchase the shoes.

Yea hope this really does happen...hate scalpers. :P
