I see that The Witcher 3 is on the horizon. Never played any game in the series. Should I go number 2 (no pun intended) for the story, or just skip to the newest one.

I don't see why not considering how cheap the game is. The people who complain about the combat also suck at it.
It's definitely worth playing, especially if you plan to import your saves into the final game in the trilogy.
Then again, the story of The Witcher 3 should be fine with no prior knowledge.
Read the plot summary on Wikipedia, the story isn't that good nor is the gameplay.
this right here. it was an alright game for what it was at the time but i wouldn't bother playing it with the new one on the horizon. just read a plot summary.
I really enjoyed 1 and I am at the start of chapter 2 in witcher 2 but it is still not clicking for me.
I would just wait for 3 tbh. TW2 is a fairly long game and when you are finished you may feel a bit fatigue of the whole thing. 3 looks much better in terms of gameplay and word design, so just go straight for that imo.
Under any circumstances do not try to play the awful pile of junk that is TW1.
Witcher 3 will probably give you enough information about what you need to know but despite this, yes, yes you should play the game, you willl understand better what is happening and the game itself is great
As an expert gamer with over 800 games and 40+ years experience in the medium, as well as a former professional Quake 3 player - no. Divinity 2 is better.
Why not? It's excellent. If you having trouble just lower the difficulty but it's definitely a must play. Story is excellent.
why do you want to start on 2? why not start from the first one?
because the first game is fucking horrible
First game is far from being horrible. It doesn't have best combat system in the world but it's a great RPG. A lot of elements in the first game are even better than the second one. Atmosphere for example or RPG elements etc.
Both games have horrible combat systems. The first game at least has something approaching a decent story.

as an old school pro PC gamer i would say Witcher 2 >>> Divinity
I'm probably one of those few people who liked the first one more than the second one.
I think we're more common than you'd think. If you don't mind below average gameplay but love story/music/characters/interesting choices then Witcher 1 is far better than 2.

The gameplay didn't really bother me that much.
However like you stated everything else was so much better/enganging than Witcher 2... Witcher 2 for was more of a graphical show case.
I'm playing through the 1st one and I'm over 30h of gameplay as we speak. Shit, I dont know how this game got so much love, even for its time: Bad gameplay, boring story, really REALLY bad voice acting, mediocre settings, average characters, bad dialogue, bad level design, bad quests (seriously I spent waaay too much time walking from A to B, B to A on this game, and worst of it all, it doesnt have a good fast travel mechanic). The only thing I liked was the Game of Thrones vibe I got from it, everything else is just... BAD
Now from what I saw TW2 and soon TW3 are way better games but jesus, I really wasnt expecting such a bad game for one wich started such a beloved series, and a game that got waaay too many generous scores when it released. I think, even for its time, it was a below average RPG
My take on the matter
I'm really hoping TW2 and 3 will wash away the bad taste TW1 left on my mouth, but since I've some OCD I must finish it before playing the next ones
Witcher 1 story >>>> Witcher 2 story
Really? Now I'm concerned for TW2...
TW1 story is bad, if TW2 story is even worse then... jesus

Yeah I never had any problems with the combat... and I'm certainly not the most skilled player by any means.
I think it's definitely worth a play-through if you have the time.
I'm not gonna knock the game... As there are elements (story, characters exloration) that are done well enough, but combat in the Witcher is pretty unsatisfying to me...
This right here. Really hope to hear great things about the gameplay from user impressions, but right now I'm holding off a purchase.
Its not as amazing as some may say. I beat it fully and it was good but not AAA good. Combat in that game is truly atrocious. If you enjoy exploring in rpg's, you'll be disappointed as well.
why do you want to start on 2? why not start from the first one?
Alas, I don't have a gaming PC.
oh, gotcha.

This^. People talk about spamming light sword attack and beating the game are full of shit or playing it on easy. Normal and higher you need to bring in signs mix in some knives, bombs, maybe traps. Using potions helps also
Both games are pretty bad especially the first. Just read a plot summary or something, you're not missing anything by not playing them.

Man I wish that were true. If it was just a matter of "suck it up and git gud!" I'd be all for that. Unfortunately I never found the combat particularly enjoyable or challenging. Just average all around.
That said, yes Clonebr01 I think it's definitely worth checking out.

idk, playing that game so close to witcher 3 might burn him out by the time it comes out. there are easier ways to see some firebush online :P

You also don't need one. It runs on toasters.
Wikipedia it. It was rough to play through when it released, I imagine it's borderline intolerable now.
Witcher 2's combat is not actually that hard; people just hack their way unto their enemies which is totally wrong. The game will teach you how to prepare an encounter. If the quest giver tells you there are zombies there, you have to bring anti-zombie equipments. You have to read a book about the zombies first to learn their weakness; prepare the suitable oil against the said monster, and if you don't have it, buy the recipe; drink potion to boost your skills/stats before encounter; equip the correct sword (I died several times because I took out the wrong sword sometimes); apply the correct oil on your equipped sword; use Yrden for protection; and finally, use Aard/Igni as your opening attack. Oh, and I forgot, just what I said earlier, don't just hack your enemies; a proper combination of strong attacks, fast attacks, blocks (and ripostes) and skillful evasion will make sure you win the said encounter. If the said approach still failed you, just f*cking mod your game so you can have the best equips, have all skills and/or become invulnerable.
I finished the game on Dark. It's not actual that hard. You just need to farm monster drops so you can sell those and buy those Dark Set. If you acquired those Dark Sets, you're basically playing it on normal mode.
I can't finish Insane difficulty, the part where you have to cross the bridge with Foltes is basically RNG. You either successfully evade the dragon's breath or you have to restart the game. :P

The game is very cheap right now around 10USD at Steam/GoG.And last year, around November, GoG, which is a sister company of CDPR, gave a free copy to everyone who visited their site.
EDIT: Bah, my free code expired.
@charizard1605: Sorry, how does that make any sense?
The game featured a very difficult intro when it first came out, but it was still totally playable for experienced gamers, and was a great game overall.
Since then, they patched in a better difficulty curve and all sorts of other player-suggested feedback. So why would the game be worse to play now than at launch?
