Poll SEGA or Capcom - who do you like more? (62 votes)

SEGA 44%
Capcom 56%

Damn, this is tough. Both have been doing well in my opinion. I love that Capcom is making quality games again. And Sega has been giving us Yakuza, Persona (publishing), Valkyria Chronicles and more. If I had to choose... I will go with Sega, but Capcom may overtake it if they keep delivering.

How about you, SW? SEGA or Capcom? Who do you like more?

SEGA, and for way too many IP's to bother listing. Capcom is my #2 though.

It depends if we are talking about just modern times or all-time.

At this point in time, I would definitely go with Capcom. They have made a pretty good comeback in recent years.

Besides Sonic Mania, which wasn't even developed by them, Sega has not impressed me much in recent years.

On the other hand, if we are talking about all-time then I would go with Sega as I thought that Sega was one of the best in the 90s and early 2000s.

Neither, I can’t remdmber the last time I bought a game by either. Alien Isolation, I think? Was ok, but not great.

Capcom? I haven’t seen that logo come across my screen in a long time. Dead Rising 3 comes to mind, but I got bored quickly with it.

So yea - neither.

My biggest gripe with Sega is they spent too many years making “arcade” games. They themselves don’t know how to make great modern Games.

That was fine for 90’s standards, but they peaked and never got better. They do however publish some great games that other competent studios know how to make.

Capcom sucked in the 90’s and didn’t get good until the 2000’s.

Capcom wins Overall because they are able to make great modern games.

SEGA definitely 100%:

  • Company of Heroes
  • Total War
  • PC ports of Yakuza, Bayonetta, Vanquish, ...

Though capcom isn't half bad either, SEGA is definitely a PC company first.

At their highest points, I'd take Sega. I still love my Game Gear and Genesis.

Capcom had a great run with lots of great games. I'm hoping that given their last couple years that they're making a comeback. I feel Sega is also on a comeback.

Well Sega let Nintendo have Bayonetta publishing rights and abandoned Vanquish so yeah, it loses several points with those two

I think the only Sega games I still enjoy today are Yakuza and... thats it

Capcom is the winner fosho, even back when they were kinda sh*tty

Capcom by far. They have two of my favorite franchises, plus some other great ones. I used to like Sega but I don't touch anything from them but Yakuza games anymore, and I refuse to let a Sonic game in my house.

Sega gave up on the Shining Force series, Turned the Phantasy Star series into online game that we do not get in the States and Never made a 2nd Skies of Arcadia. These crimes are a bit too much for me. So I went with Capcom just to say BOO to Sega!

Capcom is my pick. Capcom coin operated Arcade games were awesome. So waiting for the home release back in the NES, SNES Turbo Grafix 16 and Sega Genesis area was a big deal. Sega is Great too. But I like Capcom just a tiny bit more.

Neither, they both suck.

Sega: The greatest argument for Nintendo NOT going third party. It's like as soon as the console left, so did the magic of the games. They are just broken from that console war and it's just sad to see them now. The only games worth a damn are games by Atlus, the Yakuza series, Puyo Puyo, Valkyria, and recently Sonic. Atlus is another company, Yakuza series is made by a different dev team as well, and Sonic Mania was fan-made. Puyo Puyo is literally a unique take on Tetris, which isn't hard to make. It's like fucking up Candy Crush (which is literally a Bejeweled rip-off). Valkyria is their only pride as an in-house developed game. Still, it's a far cry from what they used to be.

Capcom: *sigh* I've always thought that Capcom is what people thinkNintendo is. They pretty much get by on a few franchises that are their golden goose. They recycle those same franchises and people lap it up. It's always weird how the same people who stereotype Nintendo as Mario/Zelda only, are sucking Capcom off for making the same 3 franchises. Picture this... Imagine if Nintendo had the **** up of the Wii U and had shitty games to boot. Now let's say the Switch releases and in the following two years the only great games left are Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon. Like Smash is just laced with DLC that'll make EA blush, Animal Crossing is just destroyed along with other franchises like: Yoshi, Luigi's Mansion, Kirby, Xenoblade, etc; only Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon survived. Now in those 2 years following the Switch launch, they have: Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 64 a glorious HD remake, Zelda Breath of the Wild, and Pokemon Sword and Shield. In 2 years while destroying their other franchises, and not promising any new IPs. If Nintendo fans claimed Nintendo is back to their glory days, we would be a laughing stock here. Yet people accept this bullshit from Capcom shills. Like all they did was rip off western open world designs for Monster Hunter, and didn't even put a good touch on it like Zelda BotW. They combined bad elements of Monster Hunter and the open world of the western games. Like it's too massive and open like western open world games, while having the grind and shitty weapon system of Japanese games (seriously, you have to sharpen your sword in the middle of a fight, what the **** is that?). They just made one original Resident Evil and then a remake of a popular game from their glory days. Like like Nintendo literally remaking Super Mario 64 in glorious HD, not much else, and then people praising them for it. DMC 5 is another golden goose and Street Fighter is fucked along with Mega Man and their other franchises. Yet people say they're back. *scoffs* Give me a fucking break.

The Capcom paragraph is a lot longer than the Sega rant, but it's for a reason. It's a common consensus that Sega is far from a comeback or doing fantastic. With Capcom, everyone is delusional about them for some reason.

@luxuryheart:

Sega - They're still producing many original arcade games, just like in their golden days. However, most of Sega's modern arcade games are exclusive to Japanese arcades. As for Atlus, they're not another company, but they're an in-house studio fully owned by Sega, the same way Naughty Dog is an in-house studio of Sony. And Sega has been making Puyo Puyo games (and Columns) long before Candy Crush or Bejeweled, both of which ripped-off much of their mechanics from Puyo Puyo.

Capcom - Almost every AAA studio recycles the same franchises. The video game industry has been franchise-driven for decades now, even before movies entered the franchise era. One company that was known for making new IPs all the time was Sega. Where has that gotten them? Not as far as Nintendo with its franchise-driven business model. That's just how the entertainment industry works. What matters most, however, is the quality of the output, which is what Capcom's been delivering lately. As for Monster Hunter World, that's just the same old Monster Hunter, but tweaked slightly to appeal more to Western audiences. Capcom are still making the classic Monster Hunter games for Japan, with World being more for international audiences.

Capcom has Dragon's Dogma which I love, but can't beat both games I named from Sega

I would love Capcom more if they made more Mega Man X type games than Mega Man

Capcom without a doubt, and it isn't even relatively close. Although I do like some Sega games. Capcom is one of the goats. My avatar should say something.

Sucks that my two favorite game franchises of all time (Breath of Fire and SOCOM) don't have any planned releases.... all I can do is sit around, wait, and hope. (As long as the BoF game is as good as the first 3 and the SOCOM game is at least as good as Confrontation, that is).

I stand corrected here. Still, Sega had quite a fall. Also, I wasn't saying that Puyo Puyo was a rip off of Candy Crush. I was saying that Candy Crush is a rip off of Bejeweled.

Capcom - Almost every AAA studio recycles the same franchises. The video game industry has been franchise-driven for decades now, even before movies entered the franchise era. Capcom isn't even recycling all their franchises, it's literally the same 3 nowadays. Resident Evil 7, REmake 2, and rumors of a REmake 3. Come on now! Street Fighter with their trash DLC, another DMC, and another Monster Hunter that's rips off western games. People claim that they're back, and I compared it to a scenario. If Nintendo fucked up Smash, put out Zelda BOTW, Pokemon, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario 64 HD Remake with a promise of Super Mario Sunshine HD Remake in the span of two years. Nintendo fans would be clowned for saying they had a great comeback, especially after they theoretically fucked up Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Xenoblade, etc.

That's hard. These two companies are the reason the Dreamcast is my favorite game system, but they have had major ups and downs since then. Overall I'd say Capcom has been more consistently good, but Sega takes more risks and has a wider variety of games in their catalogue. I'm just going to have to give a wishy washy answer; I like Capcom more, but I have more respect for Sega.

Again, almost every major AAA studio recycles the same few franchises. So the same criticism applies to virtually every major AAA studio. Unless your point is about the state of AAA gaming in general.

The reason many are saying Capcom has been on a comeback streak lately is because of the high quality of its releases in the last two or so years. In 2018, for example:

Capcom tops Metacritic publisher rankings for 2018

Also, RE7 and RE2make are the best survival horror games in a long time. DMC5 is the best hack & slash in a long time. SFV has made a comeback and is now considered by many to be arguably the best 2D fighter (rivaled only by DBFZ). Monster Hunter, previously a Japanese-centric franchise, has now gone global. Mega Man 11 is a great comeback for the Mega Man franchise. There have also been quality games in the Ace Attorney series, as well as Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. And so on.

MH World didn't "rip off Western games." The concept of an open world isn't owned by any game, company, or region, but has been universal across the global game industry for decades. They didn't "Westernize" or mess with the core MH formula, but simply tweaked it slightly to make it more accessible and appealing to Western audiences.

@Jag85: yeah capcom put out quality games the past year, even tho i take away points for street fighter 4 and the latest MvC. the year before

sega hasn't put out that great of games lately. i sometimes forget that sega is a thing, crazy how they fell from being one of the biggest players in the industry to borderline irrelevant.

Imagine if that had happened to Nintendo instead of Sega , imagine mario games going through what sonic went through over the years lol
