I've been saying this needs to happen for a while. Why build a computer and not let it compute certain things?

I guess it comes down to how well it's implemented, whether or not it will be easy and convenient to use.

So what do you think? Would an Xbox with access to Steam and EGS libraries be an appealing choice?

Well that would be interesting and potentially problematic.

Wouldn't xbox be at a loss then? I mean they are selling the consoles at loss or narrow margin and make a profit from software. If its steam capable it would just defeats the purpose of xbox.

@sakaixx: maybe they would charge $10/month for the "service", lol.

That would be fantastic, and substantially revise my view on the usefulness of the product for my own lifestyle. I find my internet setup is inadequate for in-home streaming, so using my PC as a server for gaming on my laptop in the livingroom suuuucckkkksss. So I either sit at the TV for consoles or sit at my computer desk for PC games. If the XSX could serve effectively as a cheap PC in the living-room, I might actually get one (assuming it's <$500).

Now - it would need to support the Steam controller as well.

Maybe they are relying on the value of their Game Pass subscription. I use it quite a bit on PC.

I wonder if Xbox Live would be required to play those games online.

I want Xbox live to be free. It would be ironic if the company that started paid online reverted to free.

Playing online is no longer a unique feature and is not something worth paying for.

That would be neat, but Steams quality control is all over the shit.

The games would have be curated within the service.

I'd be interested to see exactly how that would be implemented. Though, if true, it's a solid way for people to keep purchasing the actual Xbox hardware, instead of solely going to PC.

I'd definitely be interested. I don't like to dick around with PCs, so if I could use my console to play PC games, then that would help broaden my horizons.

That would be interesting. I probably wouldn’t use it all that much myself, perhaps for any PC only game that I was interested in playing I guess.

The platform is being overhauled drastically before our very eyes. And TBH, it strikes me as a move MS proper is mandating, taking the reigns from the division given its lackluster and relatively aimless purpose with respect to pushing MS’ core enterprises.

Allowing third parties to publish on Xbox devices makes sense, generally, since access to the device isn’t the main revenue driver any longer. MS is reshaping their business model to be driven by subscriptions to their PaaS, so even if individual purchases are permitted, they aren’t competitive if MS can subsume the same games into their service and offer them for less.

I have been saying Xbox SX is pre build mini PC. its not a console.

the only console releasing this gen are PS5 and whatever nintendo is releasing.

microsoft are becoming more PC oriented. releasing new Halo as PC build. releasing age of empire 4.

the new xbox is pre build PC feature steam means all old PC games too plus new ones too.

People would still have to pay for playing online, I'm sure they'll get some kickback from steam, and people still pay for gamepass.

MS jumping on the EGS is a smart move and considering China is big on the PC market, what better way to introduce MS games like EGS.

Why would anyone want a windows mode on their Xbox?

It would guarantee their consoles would turn into bricks.

Are you guys seriously hurting for web browsers, e-mail and word processing on a freaking console?

My damn iPhone does a good enough job for most of those. Get a damn laptop if you need to make a resume or something. Lol
