Oh snap.. I guess Nintendo dominating Japan with the Switch has got Sony thinking about trying another handheld. I love my PlayStation Portal, but I‘ll take a dedicated handheld for sure. Thoughts, SW? Do you hope this is true??

Curious if they'll rights bridge or if people have to double dip to play the same games they can on their consoles. It is Sony after all.

MS has a better chance with the Series S hardware becoming a handheld.😮 But MS tend to align with missing the obvious.😂

I thought Sony fans hated handhelds?

Also, yikes, Sony can barely support one platform at a time. I suspect this will get a couple of Horizon spin-offs and then be abandoned.

It'll get abandoned quicker than the Psp, Vita, PS move, PSVR, and The soon to die PSVR2. Sony has never supported it's side projects. MSI, Asus, Valve, and Lenovo already in the market with Nintendo. Sony's too late to the party. If true, this handheld is going to get it's throat cut right out the gate.

The source for this rumor isn’t great. Moore's Law is Dead has been about as accurate as the Lems “insiders” have been the past few years. Those specs aren’t great. PlayStation isn’t great at supporting their products. They should probably focus on making games for the things they have in the market now before bringing something new.

Mixed feelings about it.... On one hand I want dedicated handhelds to be a vibrant market... On the other hand it's ANOTHER piece of unnecessary hardware at premium dollars... The best announcement Sony could make is all their games are going pc on day one....

It will be cool if it's compatible with the console games. I would be interested if that was the case.

I hope they allow you to use the disc in a remote console as a key to authorize the game on the handheld, otherwise it's going to limit the games I can play. The only other option I would have is to repurchase games when/if they are on deep discount.

If you can play Bloodborne on it, it's an instant purchase for me, just for that game.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could put the disc into the handheld itself

How big would the device/battery be?

@SolidGame_basic: Especially if part of the disc sticks out and then you're basically going around with some type of plastic sawblade spinning all the time.

Maybe it could work, I guess the Portal looks big enough to fit a disc in already, and the Switch 2 will be about big enough too. Like phones, portables seem to be getting bigger. And since you install the games, it doesn't have to be spinning the disc all the time and eating battery.

I don't think it will happen though because of size and cost, and maybe it would restrict the design for heat dissipation and airflow. But it could be cool to have a portable 4k BD movie player and game console in one.

But I think the chance of that is so low that I would never expect them to do it.

Nobody hates handhelds. What they hate is a handheld so underpowered that it has trouble running titles that look worse than what was available on a 360/ps3. And the handheld would be to play ps4 and ps5 titles, not exclusive games made for the system, so it'd have no issue having any kind of game support.

Like all rumors, I will believe it if it is officially confirmed by Sony.

Anyways, is there still a reason to have a dedicated handheld gaming system in the age of smartphones and tablets?

I'm actually surprised it's taken this long. Usually Sony chases any big Nintendo success within about 5 years.

That said, if it is compatible with your existing PS4 library, this could be cool. Even if the market is getting a bit crowded.

Sony can't currently support the PS5 & PSVR2 properly at the moment (they never really did with their VR) so Sony fans wanting a new handheld is silly talk.

the handheld is to play current ps4 and ps5 titles, while vr has its own games. why is this so hard to understand?

Honestly, not sure how I feel about this.

On one hand, I think hardware developers should make platforms to play on, and then software developers (not the hardware devs) should make games for those platforms. In the frame of reference, I totally support a new platform.

But on the other hand, as a software developer, I feel like Sony might be putting the cart before the horse on this one; I think they need to pump out some games for their existing hardware before a new platform is really needed in this space.

As it is now, all this does is make a second piece of hardware to not play games on (because they don't exist).

Then again, as their future releases are allegedly going to be heavily focused on the GaaS model (gross, by the way....), having a portable is really going to increase the amount of time people spend on their service-based games.

I mean ffs even Asus has their handheld, and Nintendo is about to release their second one. Sony not having one since 2019-2020 is already weird.

A handheld Xbox would be more appealing to me b/c of the 360 backwards compatibility (especially if it had FPS boost)

A handheld that properly supports PS5 games would probably be several years away... but hey, if it makes a dent in Nintendo's sales I'm for it.

If your country was this much better, i wouldn't see any lemmings in it, which is not the case, obviously. So don't be fooled here, your country is far inferior to mine, and we don't even bother teaching you how to read, bro.

Much as I want to see Sony try again in handhelds. I fear it might be too late after just bailing on that market after Vita. Which I still think was stupid!

It makes sense, with the popularity of the Switch, Steam deck etc.

I think it might be a good idea.

While I'm not interested in hand helds, I'm interested to see what it'll be like.

If they make this thing and try to shoehorn SOCOM onto it like they did last time I swear ill lose it.... lol.. then again it should be powerful enough to hook up to my TV and play docked.... just give me a damn socom game either way I suppose. The only way I'll be getting one of these (if they're real) is for that reason alone.

Discontinue VR and push forward with a hybrid handheld that partners with the PS5.. do it.

Day one, biatches! Maybe they are realizing that the handheld market is still there. PSP and PSVs are pretty popular now. They just need to keep up the support and not give up like they did with the Vita and this new handheld will flourish.

When looking back at handhelds like GBA, DS or PSP the amount of software on these platforms was insane. For every AAA game on consoles there were about three smaller games on handhelds, literally everything appeared on there: unique games, franchises, spin offs, ...

But as all this mobile development has moved on to mobile and tablets (I just threw up a little in my mouth but I'm just gonna keep writing) it effectively cut the lifeline for handhelds.

Sony could make all the handheld consoles they want, what makes developers switch from cashcows on mobile/tablet to a dedicated handheld?

First it was Xbox chasing Nintendont outta the console biz and now Phony going handheld and probably 3rd party as well. ;o

Eh, if you can't pee in the tall grass then you can't sit on the porch with the big dogs.

lolol :P
