https://gamerant.com/resident-evil-9-open-world-engine-dragons-dogma-2-rumor/

Resident Evil 9 will be an open-world game, a well-known Capcom leaker has said. The insider also claimed that Dragon's Dogma 2 is at least partially to thank for the Resident Evilseries' purported open-world foray.

Since the early aughts, Capcom has been putting out new mainline installments in its popular survival horror franchise once every four years on average. The Japanese gaming giant maintained this release pace even after it started committing to remaking some older games in the series. The seventh and latest mainline entry, Resident Evil Village, was released in 2021, which prompted some fans to speculate that its sequel will hit the market in 2025. YouTuber and Capcom leaker Dusk Golem lent credence to that theory in 2023, stating that Resident Evil 9 is targeting a 2025 launch.

Dusk Golem has now once again taken to social media to offer some new insights into the upcoming title, including the claim thatResident Evil 9will supposedly have an open world. The leaker explained that the game fits into Capcom's usual pattern of greenlighting projects in trios, noting how the company did so fairly recently withDevil May Cry 5,Resident Evil Village, and theResident Evil 2remake. On that occasion, its alleged goal was to "take advantage" of the then-latest version of the RE Engine. Similarly, Capcom greenlitDragon's Dogma 2,Monster Hunter Wilds, andResident Evil 9with the explicit purpose of expanding its in-house engine's open-world functionality, Dusk Golem said.

Woah, an open world Resident Evil? Something doesn’t seem right lol. Would you welcome that idea, SW? Or stick to the tried and true linear formula?

Yeah no thanks lol.

I'm more hyped for an RE5 remake than RE9.

Remakes are still king.

Capcom will never, ever create a game as good as RE4 / RE4R again.

I still think RE7 and RE8 were vastly inferior to RE2 and even RE3. Let alone RE4.

RE4R: 9 completions

RE2R: 4 completions

RE3R: 3 completions

RE8: 1 completion

RE7: Never bothered finishing

to be fair I never finished RE5 either. RE5 was my first RE game and my friend and I was so god damn frusted by the tank controls even in 2009 that we gave up around 70% through. But I think Capcom can remake it with RE4 combat mechanics and actually make it a 9/10 game.

Open world justdoesn't seem like the move.

Where did this open world trend came from? Such a sh*t trend just like putting RPG mechanics in every single game.

I personally hope this info is not true as I don't really like open world games. If it's Semi open world I'll be all for it.

Again, open world design is the most immersive genre there is in gaming, BUT who the hell is capable of filling an open world with quality content? Barely any games since an open world genre was created. What i would prefer, and i'd like TLOU3 to be like that as well, is to have mini open worlds, a bit like what Metro Exodus has. Gives you plenty of exploration and stuff to do, and is small enough to be reasonably well packed with content worthwhile.

Or their open world could be like Dead Rising 1, but you're able to enter every shop in the mall and so on. If the level design is on par with the police station in RE2R, but is as big as the map in Dead Rising 1, i think it could be pretty sweet.

I also believe this being 100% true. They're going full open world for the next monster hunter, and there's no reason why not in RE. Thing is, their engine is not made for open world games, so wtf are they doing?🤷‍♂️

Why would you make Resident Evil open world... Can they just give the franchise to the team who made Resident Evil 7 and let no one else touch it?

I hope it's not true. Resident Evil has a perfect balance of not being a linear coridor move only straight game and also not a bland directionless Ubisoft Map cleaner. They have some dense multipathed spaces you get to learn. Like the Racoon City Police station/RE1 mansion or to a lesser extent the villiage/castle of RE4/8

Village felt like an open-world despite its semi open-world. That said, if Capcom can pull it off, sure let's go. I love open-world games anyway.

I don't see what it would offer that other open world style zombie games have already done. Pretty over these games full of meaningless filler just so they can stamp on the open world tag.

i couldn't quite believe just how on rails re8 felt.

fewer games have made me feel my involvement was unrequired more than village. a large % of what i played was not much more than sit back and watch, and occasionally press a button when prompted.

any move away from that format is welcomed

RE became mainstream since the original RE4 came out😢And if Nintendo could release a new Zelda title every two years, they would.

@TheEroica: I actually hadn't seen during my own gameplay, I believe someone talked about that specific scene on this very forum and I remember saying I Chris never punched a large boulder and someone shared a YT clip of him slicing it with his fist.

God damn the game is so goofy but so cool. I mean Capcom did change a lot in RE2, RE3 *and* RE4 remakes not just the combat mechanics and camera angle, so Idk. I feel like Capcom can remake RE5 into a masterpiece. But they need to keep the boulder scene for sure.

And yeah, RE2 and RE3 remakes werre excellent games. RE7 on the other hand, wasn't. It was an okay game.

It's the final 5 minutes of the game when it happens.... The action fantasy goes overboard but it's super funny and on point. I'm not an RE mega fan or anything so for me it was just goofy. The game though was wonderful to play with a friend. I did so several times and maxed out most weapons (which meant the game became reeeeally easy.)

I'd do another runthrough on my Deck if someone was game.

Resident Evil has always been full of cheesy cringe, from "Jill sandwich" in the first RE to "Chris vs. Boulder" in RE5. It's part of the series charm at this point. They better not remove such an iconic (ironic) scene.

I would be surprised if they can pull horror in an open world. Open world is too free to make you feel scared.

I could see it working with a semi-open, sandbox, instanced layout with certain zones and such...but something like Far Cry or Assassin's Creed? Nah.

The idea of an open-world design just seems sort of antithetical to the overall nature of RE. Doesn't mean it couldn't work, though. And I admit I'm not all that familiar with the franchise these days.

Open world horror could work.

If you think about it, the original Silent Hill was already somewhat open world back in 1999. Yet it was one of the greatest horror games of all time.

I suspect Capcom might be thinking something along the lines of Silent Hill when discussing an open world RE9.

For its time, the original RE4 was way more impressive than anything in RE4R.
