I played Final Fantasy X as an 8 year old back in 2001 ( so I'm too young for FFVII) and it is probably my second favourite game ever. Even 19 years ago - I simply could not bring myself to play a PS1 cause of shitty graphics, much less doing so in 2020. 10 years later I got the ROM installed on my high school computer, but even in maths class - I couldn't force myself to play it past the first 3-4 hours or so.

I literally missed one of the greatest games of all time and could never experience it like people did in 1997.

... Until the 2020 remake; I played the demo and that was probably the most fun I have had in any 30 minutes of gaming in 3 or 4 years. Finally I get to enjoy it like peeps did 23 years ago!

On a related note, my first Resident Evil game was the 5th one (not a fan of it, not particularly highly rated game either).

The first 3 were way too old for me to play and although Resident Evil 4 was modern enough, especially on PC it's archaic control scheme (not being able to shoot and move) completely put me off. I missed another 96/100 meta masterpiece. That goes for Resident Evil 1-3 as well. Skipped RE6 & RE7. Not a fan of this franchise.

... But just last week I bought and am now on my third run of Resident Evil 2. 9/10, will play again. runner-up GOTY after Death Stranding for 2019. 1998 masterpiece that I would NEVER played unless it was remade for 2019.

Now I get to play Resident Evil 3 - Not exactly one of the greatest games ever, at least no where near the level of RE4 / FFVII or even RE2 but still a great game that I will 100% buy on sale. FFVII day 1.

So let's give RE4 a couple of years, by then it will be an 18 year old PS2-based game which can be remade in 4K/60fps/ray-tracing and the ability to move and shoot. That would be a day-one purchase for me.

Ignoring the gameplay, I think in some cases such as Black Mesa, upgrading the graphics and changing the audio loses a lot of the charm of the thing it's suppose to be improving upon.

I enjoy a good remake as much as the next guy, but let's not kid ourselves as to why we are getting so many of them: lack of creativity and originality among developers, and that new, big games now take an entire generation or more to realize.

Essentially, people are going to spend a better part of a grand for new console hardware, only to be told their favorite game franchises will have the next game in the series ready for them by gen 10. lol

A full remake like FF7, RE2 and RE3 is fine. But the lazy cash grab we see on the Switch is the worse thing that can happen to a system.

Yeah I love Remasters myself as well which I think is what you’re referring to. It’s certainly a great way to play games that you may not have played before. Having been an avid gamer for 40+ years myself it’s somewhat difficult for me to find a remastered game that I want to play that I haven’t played before. Even still though I very much enjoy playing through some of my favourite games again with new coat of paint. Having said that I don’t think that I’d say it’s the best thing to happen this gen. I’m more partial towards crossplay.

I’m ok with remakes as long as they are warranted. I don’t think they should be encouraged, I think it’s like rebooting franchises in Hollywood. Look at The Terminator. No matter how many times they try to reboot that franchise, they cannot help but screw it up worse.

I think a FF7 remake is welcomed. I probably won’t play it until I get the Xbox Series X.

But when you just want remakes. You hamper creativity from studios.

Yep, I totally agree. Hopefully all these remakes will serve as a reminder of what made these games great. And we're seeing some signs of it happening already with developers like Capcom. This is the perfect chance for young gamers to get to play certain great games they missed out on too.

I hate remasters but I am indifferent towards remakes now.

I think a reimagining like FFVII Remake is a good way to do a remake. Both old and new fans gets to experience something new.

Bring on remakes.

Many games with brilliant ideas were held back by technology insufficient to realize them to their greatest potential.

Only one thing was missing, and I can subscribe to that in the workshop i.e. the complete version of "on a rail"

I'm very much looking forward to the Opposing Force and Blue Shift remakes.

Umm yeah, who want new games when you can play the same shit you did 20 years ago, with slightly better graphic!

Also ff7 has nothing in common with the old game, except the story! Still a great game( judging by the demo) but so could a proper new game be...

No.. just no. If I want to play those games I already own them. Let them be. Bring on more prequels and sequels. Give me a direct tie in any day. The best games for remakes are mostly online multiplayer games and they usually screw those up royally.

Remakes/remasters are mostly just cash grabs and lazy excuses for companies to cash in with AA budgets... I would rather they just bring back more AA games.

Sure, this isn't always the case, but it is in the vast majority of cases.

@zaryia: This is a great example. I have never played the original Deus Ex. Only the Deus EX: Human Revolution, which I played for 5-10 hours and didn't really enjoy.

A Deus EX remake is something I can see myself buying, and its 20 years old now so about time :D

@briguyb13:

I will not rest until we get a Metal Gear Solid remake. Long story short; half my top 10 favourite game list is filled with Metal Gear games, but the original MGS and even Metal Gear 1 & 2 pre-date my gaming years. I tried my very best as the biggest Metal Gear fan ever to play it around 2008 when MGS4 came out but couldn't bring myself past the first hour or two.

Imagine Metal Gear 1, 2 & Solid remade in the FOX Engine, 4K/60fps with MGS5 graphics and MGS4/MGS5-like controls?? That would be my GOTY 2021 for sure. 2023, 2025,2027 they could remake Sons of Libery, Snake Eater, Peace Walker with modern PS5 graphics and up-to-date control schemes (not the bird's eye-view crap we tolerated back then). GOTY every year for me.

@MirkoS77: Exactly. Agreed 100%. I'll never understand why people will hate on them...

"but we already have it on PS1/PS2" - who the **** would even play a PS3 game today let alone 1-2 in 2020.

Even then, no one is forcing you to buy it. I want it though.

I've been campaigning for Metal Gear remakes for ever since FFVII:R was announced ages ago, and most people tell me "y0u alREadY gOT Twin Snakes" - which was 17 years ago, on the Game Cube. Give me Decima Engine, 4K, PS5 version please.

@Archangel3371: Nope I am not talking about remasters, this thread is specifically targeting REMAKES,

games like RE2, RE3, FFVII and Shadow of the Colossus come to mind.

What I'm not talking about are remasters like Uncharted remastered Nathan Drake Collection, God of War remastered, RE4 remasters, RE5: remaster, TLOU remastered etc. Those games just up the resolution and repaint the textures, maybe doubling the FPS.

I mean taking a game from the PS2, PS1 or even SNES, and completely rebuilding them from scratch to some-what give newcomers a way to experience these games like people did in the 1990s. That means not only giving 20+ year old games '2020' graphics, but also updating camera angles, control schemes etc to make them play like a 2020 game.

@Mozelleple112: Ah ok, my mistake. I saw Final Fantasy X there and mistook it for you talking about playing the current gen remasters of it.

I agree though that remakes are great as well. I’ve previously played many of these myself when they first came out and while it‘s a great way for new players to get to experience these games I also think that it’s a great way for people like me to experience them all over again in a new way.

@uninspiredcup: I have to say, I like the new Robocop movie but that scene was gringy as hell. I far prefer the original version over that.

Still, fighting the Gargantua in Black Mesa feels like fighting the Gargantua in Half Life.

And likewise fighting the Blast Pit tentacles in Black Mesa feels like fighting the Blast Pit tentacles in Half Life.

I will say though that Interloper was bad in Black Mesa and should've been left on the drawing board. But apart from that one blemish, it's a 10/10 game for me.

Was kinda thinking more in terms of effects.

Robocop (and 2) use stop motion while the remake uses a bunch of technology that wasn't attainable back then. On paper, it should be better, but it feels hollow, all those millions of dollars being shat at you on screen a big "meh" compared a little toy-figure.

Loading Video...

That's pretty much the feeling evoked from OG Halflife compared to Black Mesa.

Halflife but better looking? Great. An automatic win.

Nope. No soul.

Good luck with RE3, as I clocked 4 hours and backtracked heavily once I had the lockpick/bolt cutter. Yeah, I enjoyed it, but remakes are not the be-all-end-all.

Imagine if every game ever made got an automatic remake every 7 years. It just stealth updated your library...

What would you play then?

@so_hai:

Wait, who the hell said anything about every 7 years? I have only been talking about games that are 20 years old.

I briefly mentioned MGS games, but something like this:

MGS1 Remake --> 2021 = 23 years since original

MGS2: Remake --> 2023 = 22 years since original

MGS3: Remake --> 2025 = 21 years since original

MGS4: Remake no need any time soon, maybe in PS6 when 8K/60 becomes standard and we will have ray-tracing and whatever the hell comes after that, HDR and whatever comes after HDR, etc. Perhaps some new type of gameplay becomes standard within the next 10 years of gaming so around 2030 sometime, by then it will be *drumroll* , 22 years since release.

as for Resident Evil --> RE2 & RE3 were both remade 21 years after launch. I hope Capcom releases RE4 remake somewhere around 2023, which would be 18 years since it came out in 2005.

FFVII came out in 1997, FFVII:R comes out 23 years later, in 2020.

I never played FFVIII or FFIX either, (1998 & 1999 respectively) so I wouldn't mind a remake of those games in 2021-2023 (20+ years since launch) and then my all time second favourite game FFX could get a deserving remake 2024-2025 (well over 20 years by then)

Remaking games once every three generations is a fantastic idea.

Why would I play a PS1 game during PS2 era? You tried getting your kids to play something you grew up with? they'll think it is garbage. Remakes give them the chance to play games 'as new'.

@Archangel3371:

No worries. I actually see FFX has a remaster. I'll skip it though unless Sony gives it for free via PS+. and FFX REMAKE in the future, remade on the same engine with the same standard as FF 17 or whatever will be the current FF... holy shit that has me drooling.

Disagree, we need new AAA games and I haven't played one since TLOU and Uncharted 2.

regurgitated unoriginal ideas are the best thing ever.

awesome.

its called an easy paycheck banking on nostalgia, and sadly it works cause it still sells.

@Mozelleple112: I'm testing the limit of how much you like remakes by proposing a limit case. So it seems you like remakes but not too often and not for all games.

When donde correctly and with care and dedication ... then yes, Remakes are amazing ... i can only dream with the day someone decides to properly remake my two favorite FF games ever (VI and IX) or even better ... a full Chrono Trigger Remake with the current engine ... man.

@Mozelleple112: I've always wanted remakes of Metal Gear 1 & 2. Those are the Metal Gear games that need remakes the most. They're the backbone of the entire franchise, the core games that connect the stories of Solid Snake and Big Boss. And yet most fans still haven't played MG 1 & 2.

MG2 has aged well, but MG1 hasn't aged so well. A remake of MG1 could make it more enjoyable today, while the MG2 remake would only enhance what was already a great game.

MGS can wait. It already had The Twin Snakes remake some 16 years ago. For now, the focus should be on remaking MG 1 & 2.

Did we actually get that many remakes?

Black Mesa and Resident Evil 2 are the only notable ones I can think of right now.

Nope. No soul.

That's how I felt with I Am Legend. Granted it's not the best movie, but why make the monsters CGI? You're telling me there aren't enough emaciated, starving, desperate actors in Hollywood to play skinny zombie-people? Give me real actors with some awesome makeup and effects over CGI any day.

Crash, Spyro, Homeworld, Modern Warfare 1&2, Final Fantasy, I guess there are a few more.

Nothing outrageous, but still noteworthy.
